Oh, the Salsky audience, locked at home during the pandemic, yearned for such spectacles! Situated along the hills along the difficult route, hundreds of people cheered for the crews of their fellow countrymen. Visitors also receive shouts of approval: don’t leave guests without support! So on Saturday the Giant hosted the last off-road races in the Southern Federal District this year. The organizer, the Salsk off-road club “Yastreb”, made sure that the holiday was a success, and it turned out great!
"STANDARD", TO THE START!
At nine in the morning the sun was already hot, and the early spectators took their seats. The most experienced race observers stocked up with blankets and sunscreen. The shadow was created as best they could. I remember the picture: two preschool children are hurrying after their dad, one of them is holding a small sun umbrella.
9.00: After the drivers' briefing, the first race in the Standard category starts. It involves cars that are not adapted for racing, in factory performance. They move without serious obstacles, which are prepared for heavier categories. But how they fly over the pits! Three Sal cars participated in this category - the crew of pilot Roman Novikov and navigator Alexey Peisler in a Chevrolet Niva, pilot Evgeny Dorokhin and navigator Vadim Nekhoroshikh in a Niva, and a tandem of Sinchenko brothers, Alexey and Pavel, in a UAZ named Kysh.
The crew of Novikov and Peisler won the race, leaving behind the car from Karachay-Cherkessia. “We had a great ride: a well-coordinated crew, everything was done quickly and clearly,” comments Sergei Omelchenko, organizer of the competition and rider of the Salsk team. “Dorokhin and Nekhoroshikh became third, and the Sinchenko brothers, unfortunately, summed up the calculations: they were in the lead and decided that they had already completed 10 laps, but in fact - 9... Well, racing in “Standard” is a matter of chance: how lucky you are.” .
A total of 11 crews took part in the first race: from Salsk, Tselina, Shakhty, Rostov, Aksay and Cherkessk.

The sun is getting hotter, and spectators flocked to the cafe in the open field for something cool. The mineral water was scattered instantly, but there was no luck with the ice cream - they didn’t sell it: the generator didn’t have enough power.
The second group of riders sets off to explore the entire track with their own eyes in advance, going around each hole with their own feet.
The next race is open in the Niva category.” Nine crews were entered: from Tselina, Novocherkassk, Shakhty, Karachaevsk, Uchkeren, Lermontov and Grozny. The crew from Karachaevsk was ahead of the rest: Azret-Aliy Chotchaev and Marat Chekkuev. Behind them were Tselitsa residents Sergei Novikov and Anton Tatarin, and the third were Rashid and Azret Laypanov from Karachay-Cherkessia.

TOURISM IS NOT AN EASY BUSINESS
The sun alternately hides behind the clouds, and a light breeze rises. The spectators perk up.
The next race is in the Tourism category. Here the cars have already been modified, and the track awaits them much more difficult. The previous categories “invigorated” the track - they turned the lake into a swamp, and it’s so easy to get stuck there, but it’s not at all easy to get out.
The UAZ of Marat Botashev and Murat Uteuliev from Karachay-Cherkessia won; in second place was a car named “Samurai” from Armavir, driven by pilot Yuri Dudnik and navigator Valery Shchekinov. And the third result was shown by Tselitsa residents on Niva - Sergey Novikov and Anton Tatarin.
Among the nine crews, two Salsk crews participated - a UAZ driven by Alexander Didenko and navigator Sergei Omelchenko, and a UAZ driven by Alexander Gorobets and Maxim Semenov. Unfortunately, the second crew left the race - the car was out of order. The UAZ of Didenko and Omelchenko was only sixth. “An old breakdown reminded us of itself, a wheel came off, and we were unable to participate further,” explains the navigator.

HEAVY “SPORT”
The “heavier” the category, the more people gather near ditches, swamps and pits. Women shout approvingly after the guests who did not bring a support group with them. Men take pictures of spectacular jumps with mud splashes and how they tow cars, stuck in the mud-smelling slurry.
There were no Sal athletes in the “Sports” category, but the spectators loudly supported the 10 participating crews with all their hearts. The winner of this race was the silver medalist of the previous race - a Suzuki named "Samurai", driven by the pilot Yuri Dudnik, and the navigator was Valery Shchekinov. This is the crew of the Armavir off-road club “Viking 4×4”, performing with the support of the motor oil manufacturer “AKross”.
Pilot Yuri Dudnik last year topped the Caucasian rating of pilots in the categories “Tourism” and “Sports”, and also brought “gold” and “bronze” from international competitions from Armenia. “We were a little nervous, because the organizers had prepared a very difficult course: they expected at least three turns for each lap,” noted Yuri. “Well, the opponents are very worthy!” Second were Igor Sarychev and Vladimir Reznik from Mineralnye Vody in a Toyota, and third were Nikolai Zhernosek and Oleg Talitsky from Elista and Priyutny in an Izh Oda car. The last team was a pleasant surprise,” says Sergei Omelchenko. “We had a great time on the course!”

REAL "EXTREME"!
The sun completely hid behind the clouds, a cold wind rose, and it became more comfortable to watch the race, wrapped in the same old blankets on which the spectators were lying an hour ago. Mostly the kids get the blankets, while the adults warm up, loudly supporting the participants in the last race...
“Salskaya Steppe” has not yet qualified for the “Extreme” category at the Gigant competitions. The bet was on the people's favorite - a Toyota named "Red", driven by Dmitry Korol, and Alexander Ponomarev as a navigator. How everyone gasped in unison when the pilot, trying to jump over half of the mud section, sharply turned to the right and flew on his side, showing the audience the bottom of the car. How she landed on wheels and not on the roof - only physics knows! Unfortunately, an unexpected breakdown on the fourth lap did not allow the car to complete 10 laps, but what they managed to do was completed with dignity, second place was already in their pocket. By the way, according to the stories of competition car builder Dmitry Korol, next season he will delight the audience with something amazing (let's keep the intrigue until spring). The third place was taken by the crew from Astrakhan: Dmitry Bogdanov drove the Izh Oda car, and Igor Krasenko tinkered with the winch. Well, the winner was the Tselinsky project “Chimera”. The black auto beetle jumped over obstacles on the fly and did not get stuck in the mud for a long time. And on the longest and deepest swamp, the crew showed interesting tactics! The car jumped from acceleration as far as possible into the slush, then, having dropped off the navigator and having felt lighter by almost a hundredweight, it quickly got out of the mud and stormed the steep climb. And then the road went in a loop through the neighboring swamp: it was here that the navigator waited when it was time to work with the winch.
Five laps were enough for the winner to recognize his leadership - and the short race turned out to be very useful...

Based on the results of several competitions in the ranking of the Southern Federal District Trophy Sprint Cup, the crew of Alexander Didenko and Sergei Omelchenko took third place in Tourism. And in “Extreme” the second place is occupied by Dmitry Korol and Alexander Ponomarev (navigator Evgeny Korol is replacing).
It's getting dark and a dust storm has risen over the field. The participants' wives ate the hot shulum that was cooked at the end of the competition in the camps, freezing from gusts of cold wind. There was dust in the eyes and on the teeth, and most of the spectators did not wait for the presentation of the cups.
But almost all the participants stayed for the award ceremony - I really enjoyed the competition!
“Great competition day: everything turned out great! The weather did not disappoint: it was neither hot nor cold, just what we needed,” sums up Sergei Omelchenko. — I would like to thank the head of the administration of the Gigantovsky rural settlement, Yuri Shtelman: as always, he helps us hold the races. The area was cleared of garbage, they brought us trash cans, dry closets, and a shower with clean water for athletes. The site was mowed, disked, and fire safety was ensured.
Let me note that the pandemic did not affect our competitions in any way. There were a lot of participants. Chechnya, Karachay-Cherkessia, Armavir, Pyatigorsk, Kislovodsk, Krasnodar, Dagestan, Volgograd, Astrakhan, Kalmykia, Volgodonsk, Novocherkassk, Rostov, Tselina arrived. A large team of the Southern Federal District and North Caucasian Federal District has gathered!”

Purpose

The cheapest analogues with such “tractor” cross-country ability cost a lot of money (10 times more), so buying a VAZ 2121 for driving on roads without hard surfaces pays off 100%. Hello dear, I want to share my opinion and leave my review about the VAZ 2121 Niva car. In my opinion, this is the most successful car with excellent cross-country ability and appearance, invented back in that century and produced to this day. What, what, but the quality of “cross-country ability” cannot be taken away from the Niva. Through mud, through mountains, through a ford, off-road, in winter and summer it rushes like a tank. This field is intended for villages, urban-type settlements, and small provincial towns with poor road surface, where it is not speed that is important, but cross-country ability. The car is wonderful for romantics, fishermen, hunters, and just normal people who love nature in hard-to-reach places.
My friend and I went fishing in his Niva and covered a lot of kilometers in the Ural Mountains. It never let me down on the road, although after fishing it required a good repair.
Driving the Niva on highways and good roads is not very comfortable. Although it accelerates and maintains a good speed of about 100 km. an hour, but the cabin gets a little noisy due to the working transfer case. But overall the car is great, the driving experience has more positive emotions than negative ones.
