Topic: Timing belt life

Here in the video about the timing belt they said that it runs for about 180 thousand km, and that there is not a word about it in the service book - strange. . Owners, you can confirm (ask your personal manager) - this seems abnormal.

Everything in the service book is written:

Yes, there was simply a statement that nothing was written in the service book, but it turns out that this is not so. But I can’t pretend to say whether what is written in it is true or not.

Re: Timing belt life

On my previous car I drove 50,000 miles in four years. God willing, I’ll get by without a replacement if these numbers remain!

Re: Timing belt life

I think the numbers were mixed up with the Nissan engine, it just has a chain. Belts have never lasted that long.

I can’t say anything about VAZ. Owned an Aveo. 101 hp, timing belt replacement at mileage 130,000. And this is according to the regulations

The chain moves differently, the more powerful the engine, the more often you will need to change it. The latest generation of engine in the Audi averages 60 thousand and is greatly stretched despite the fact that it is far from single-row and not made of plastic.

Re: Timing belt life

On a UAZ Patriot, the chain could even break after several thousand kilometers.

Re: Timing belt life

Already wrote, I’ll repeat. The supplier of belts for Vesta gives a guarantee of 240,000 mileage. VAZ is on the safe side and recommends replacement at 180,000 mileage. The roller needs to be changed at 90,000.

Engine options for Vesta

Vesta is available in variations with four different engines, which differ in volume and power:

  • VAZ-11189 volume 1.6 l torque 140 N. m and power 64 kW/87 l. With.
  • VAZ-21129 volume 1.6 l torque 148 N. m and power 78 kW/106 l. With.
  • VAZ-21179 volume 1.8 l torque 170 N. m and power 90 kW/122 l. With.
  • HR16DE volume 1.6 l torque 153 N. m and power 114 l. With.

Three variations were created and produced by AvtoVAZ itself, and the fourth model is a product of cooperation between Renault and Nissan, which differs from others in the presence of a mechanical chain instead of a timing belt.

Belt motors

Let's look at three versions of the Lada Vesta engine, equipped with a standard timing belt.

This model is the weakest of all available in the West and is a classic eight-valve. One of the features of the engine is its simplicity. Power is 64 kW/87 hp. pp., which is 27 less than the maximum version. And when it breaks, the valves bend.

The engine is an improved modification of the 21127 engine; it uses 16 valves. If the timing belt breaks on this engine, the valves bend because there are no grooves for them. The recommended timing for replacing the belt is 90 thousand km.

Timing belt replacement algorithm

Replacement with 21129

The manufacturer recommends replacing the belt and roller on engine 21129 after 180 thousand km. To replace, purchase part 21126–1006040.

Main replacement steps:

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2. Remove the right wheel, fender liner, and engine mudguard.
  3. Loosen the accessory drive pulley bolt and remove the accessory drive belt.
  4. Remove the engine cover and right mount.
  5. Remove the timing cover by unscrewing the five bolts.
  6. Remove the accessory drive pulley.
  7. Remove the crankshaft disc and front timing cover.
  8. Check the alignment of marks A, B, C, D. If necessary, rotate the crankshaft. Check that the mark also matches on the crankshaft pulley.
  9. Loosen the tension roller and remove the timing belt, starting at the camshaft pulley.
  10. Replace the tension roller without fully tightening the bolt.
  11. Install the new timing belt, making sure the timing marks match. Perform all steps in reverse order.
  12. Tension the belt by turning the pulley clockwise until its cutout aligns with the rectangle.
  13. Turn the crankshaft 2 turns. If the marks still match, the adjustment has been made correctly.

Replacement with 21179

The timing belt on the 21179 engine should be replaced every 180,000 km, and the pump must also be changed along with the belt. It is believed that the service life of the pump is similar.

It is difficult to replace a motor yourself for several reasons:

  1. There are no markings on the pulleys on this motor.
  2. The camshaft must be fixed with a tool, which is also quite difficult to install.
  3. It is necessary to disassemble a large number of parts to get to the gas distribution mechanism.

To carry out work on replacing the timing belt, you will need to disconnect the lower and upper engine mounts, remove the generator, plastic intake manifold, valve cover and disc.

Since there are no marks on the crankshaft and camshaft, they must be fixed with special tools.

There are slots on the camshaft; their correct location is vertical, parallel to each other.

To secure the crankshaft, you must also use a special tool that will secure the gear through the crankshaft bracket.

Once the crankshaft and camshaft are fixed, you can replace the timing kit in the usual manner.

To replace the belt on this engine, we recommend contacting service centers.

Replacement with 11189

Replacing the belt on engine 11189 is the easiest of all Lada Vesta engines.

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2. Remove the right front wheel.
  3. Check that the marks match.
  4. Remove the timing belt protective cover.
  5. Remove the alternator belt pulley and loosen the tension roller.
  6. Remove the timing belt.
  7. Install the new tension roller without fully tightening it.
  8. Install the new belt, starting at the camshaft pulley.
  9. Set the required tension by adjusting the roller.

Removing the timing belt

The technology of this stage depends on the brand of engine. Let's consider possible options with different power units.

Complete set with VAZ-21129 engine

First you need to align the technological marks.

  1. Place a 17mm wrench onto the pulley bolt.
  2. Rotate it until the marks on the pulley and on the oil pump body coincide.

In this condition, the marks on the pulleys of the two camshafts should coincide with the marks on the cover.

Secure and secure the pulleys with a tool. Its index according to the factory nomenclature is 67.7811-9516. This is necessary so that the valve timing does not go astray.

Equipment with VAZ-21179 engine

The combination of marks is similar to the Priora and some other Zhiguli cars. Using the same 17 mm wrench, turn the crankshaft bolt until the two marks coincide.

The difference in working with this engine is that another device with index 67.7811-9704 is used to secure the camshafts.

Mark the position of the two camshaft pulleys in relation to the rear cover. This is convenient to do with a colored marker.

Which belt to buy

One of the important points when replacing a timing belt is choosing a new one.

On the VAZ-11189 engine, the standard part is numbered 21080100604082, with a standard price of about 300 rubles. It is produced in Poland (Gates company). The most popular analogue would be part VT25009 from China (VKT company), whose price varies around 250–300 rubles.

On the VAZ-21179 and 21129 models, the factory standard will be part number 8201069699, with Renault symbols. Country of manufacture – Poland (Gates), the price is in the range of 1100–1300 rubles. Three options will be proven analogues on vesta without negative reviews:

CONTITECH CT 1179 is a German-made part, the quality is not inferior to the original, and the price is 2.5 times cheaper (760 rubles). Is more often used than the original. Gates 5671 XS – Polish part, price around 1250 rubles. Problems in operation or quality are rare, the parameters are completely similar to the original part. Bosch 1987949686 - version from Germany, price about 800–1000 rubles, a well-known world brand. Mainly used in Renault cars. Belt replacement interval

According to the manufacturer's recommendations, replacement must be done after 180 thousand km. But, in practice, it is better to check and, if necessary, replace the part every 70–100 thousand kilometers.

Replacements according to service life

Replacing the timing belt for engines 11189/21129, according to the regulations, is carried out when the mileage reaches 180 thousand km. But it may be necessary a little earlier, because the condition of the belt is checked at every maintenance.

For the 11189 engine, the cost of a timing kit with catalog number 21116100604086 is 2900 rubles. For the 21129 engine, the cost of the belt is 3,450 rubles (article number - 8201069699), and the tensioner roller with article number 8200908180 will cost 4,000 rubles.

Replacing the timing chain of the HR16DE-H4M engine is not regulated - it is designed for its entire service life. But still, practice shows that in the region of 250 thousand km. may need replacement.

The fuel filter on Vesta is designed for its entire service life. It is changed only if the fuel pump breaks down, which has a service life of 180,000 km.

What are the dangers of incorrect installation?

Improper replacement of the gas distribution mechanism on a Lada Vesta can lead to damage to the valves in the event of a break. And also, this leads to faster wear of all engine parts associated with the timing system. If you are not confident in your abilities, you should seek the help of a specialist. This will cost approximately 5–6 thousand rubles.

To avoid being blown up by a mine, it is enough to know where it is laid. Let's play sapper and find out when you really need to change coolant pumps and timing belts on VAZ engines.

Domestic engines for Grant, Kalin, Prior, Vest and Iksreev, with the exception of VAZ-11183, belong to the “plug-in” category. What this means is that when the timing belt breaks, the pistons meet the valves. Read - it exploded and led the engine to destruction, which was expensive to repair.

According to the scheduled maintenance regulations, the timing belt should be changed at 90,000 km.

In practice, some owners change the timing belt at 50-60 thousand km. If the car is under warranty and you are serviced by an official dealer, then you can change it according to the regulations.

By the way, the timing kit fits the 126 Lada Priora engine.

And here's another option:

Roller - KOYO PU 355816RR9D Bolt - 90105-10248 Timing belt - CONTITECH CT1137 or Gates 5631 XS Tensioner roller - TORQUE KR5070 Pump - PILENGA WPP2170

Engine valves VAZ-21116

The average consumer has access to only those that come with the car from official documents. What follows from them? Open the Grants service book. Replacing the timing belt - at 75 thousand kilometers for an 8-valve engine, not a word about the 16-valve belt! The same situation is with Kalina - I came across a book where there is nothing to say about one engine, but on the other we only check the condition of the belt, but there is no talk of a planned replacement. It’s even more fun with the Priora - there are service books where there is not a word at all about the gas distribution mechanism, but the air conditioning compressor belt is mentioned in almost every maintenance coupon.

With Vesta and Xray, progress is obvious - at 45, 75, 105, 135 and 165 thousand we adjust the gaps in the gas distribution mechanism. And for the first time we plan to remember the timing belt along with the rollers for 180 thousand kilometers! This is for 16-valve engines VAZ-21129, 21179 and 8-valve Vesta VAZ-11189. I can’t do without the quote: “2.11. Replace the timing belt along with the rollers. 2.12. Replace the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. Replace the toothed belt, tensioner and support roller (for the VAZ-11189 8-cl. engine, only the tensioner) of the engine gas distribution mechanism drive. Adjust the tension of the toothed belt." Not only is the oil oil (we change the same belt twice), but of all the parts, they didn’t remember the most vulnerable one - the pump!

Work progress

Dismantling

When replacing the timing belt on Lada Vesta and X-Ray yourself, you first need to dismantle some components. First of all, remove the top cover, which covers the timing belt. It is held on by 5 bolts, which are unscrewed using a 5mm hexagon bit.

Support

Then the right engine mount is removed. To do this, the power unit must be raised slightly using a traverse. It is installed on the car, after which the hook is threaded into the eye and the right side of the engine is raised. As an alternative, you can use a simple jack, and as an additional support - a stand.

The right airbag itself is fixed to the power unit with 3 bolts, and to the body with 2 bolts.

The bolts attaching the cushion to the spar are unscrewed using a wrench and a 16mm socket. Next, using a TORX E12 wrench, the bolts attaching to the engine are unscrewed. All that remains is to remove the pillow. For greater convenience during assembly, it is recommended to first outline the seat of the pillow with a marker.

Locker

After this, the front right wheel is removed, and then the fender liner, which is fastened with screws, is dismantled. The locker covers the pulleys, and therefore you can’t get to them right away. However, as an alternative, you can simply cut off a small piece of the locker and leave it on.

However, it is recommended to still spend a little time on disassembly and not damage the component.

Attaching the locker to the bumper

Engine Cooling Water Pump

Here it is, a mine - a water pump. Refers to the cooling system, but is driven by a timing belt. If the pump wedges due to the death of the bearing, it will cut off the teeth on the belt, and then there will be destruction in the motor. And they “forgot” to mention this detail in the routine maintenance section of all service books. What to do with it? The consumer can only guess. Should we wait for death from natural wear and tear on a plug-in motor? Stupidity. And if changed, then when? It seems that the mine is not even the water pump itself, but the complete disregard for it in all the official VAZ “literature” for the consumer.

New VAZ engines are now equipped with high-quality timing belts from well-known brands. I believe that if no oil gets on it, it will cost 180 thousand. But is the difference in components really so great that on the 8-valve VAZ-11186 for Granta the belt must be changed at the 75th thousand, and on its closest relative VAZ-11189 at the 180th?

Let's continue the research. The pulleys are not demolished at all. Pressure roller bearing up to 180 thousand? Let's admit it, although it's hard to believe. But why change all this equipment at the 180th thousand, if the estimated life of the engine is 220 thousand km? Refresh before demise or major overhaul? If you don’t believe me, look at the photo taken in the workshops where VAZ engines are produced.

Routine maintenance for VAZ engines.

Nowadays, new engines also use Korean pumps, which are rumored to be of better quality. But even if you cut me, not a single pump of 200 thousand comes out. I do not believe! Moreover, I see complete confusion in the service books, the lack of a unified approach to servicing the same gas distribution mechanisms from model to model and, most importantly, an indifferent attitude towards the consumer. Not from all factory workers - from those who are responsible for a specific direction and are killing the work of other creators of cars at the Volga Automobile Plant with stupid pieces of paper. But if the charge is planted, and the specialists did not help, then we will clear the mines ourselves.

Korean-made coolant pump for VAZ-21179 engine

The owner of any elderly foreign car with a timing belt will confirm that repairmen insist that during a scheduled belt change, they replace both the pump and the pressure rollers with bearing assemblies. And these parts are often sold as a set. Moreover, at a discount - the whole set is cheaper than the belt, rollers, and pump separately.

I don’t want to once again convince you that the stingy pays twice, but over the years I have come to the conclusion that Western manufacturers include in the regulations changing the belt not because of the belt as such, but because of the pump and tensioner bearings. They just needed a reason to reliably replace the entire set of parts associated with the camshaft drive, and they found it.

I propose to do the same with our engines. Why? Formally, at each maintenance it would be necessary to remove the cover and inspect the timing belt and water pump. You can see a tear in the belt, as well as a leak on the pump. In both cases, the part is changed without delay. But this is a malfunction. And if everything is outwardly normal, the ideal option is to include preventive replacement in the regulations.

Installing the attachment belt

Assembly is carried out in reverse order. To install the belt, use fixture 67.7834-9703 or a handy tool (screwdriver).

In configurations without air conditioning, install the belt on the generator pulley (No. 3) and using the device, put the belt on the damper (No. 6), after which we rotate the damper by the bolt head clockwise 3.4 turns and put the belt on the grooves.

In configurations with air conditioning, first of all, the belt is put on the damper (No. 6), and only then on the air conditioning compressor pulley (No. 4), generator (No. 3) and tension roller (No. 2). When the belt is put on all units, it is necessary to move the tension roller to the lower position, for which we turn it clockwise and fix it with the roller nut (No. 1).
