Welding the body of a VAZ 2107

Typically, damage to the body of the VAZ 2107 is associated with corrosion or is a consequence of an accident. Electrode welding is not recommended, since it is almost impossible to make a high-quality seam on the body with its help. The new threshold must be located strictly in the door arch, not protrude anywhere and not drown. After a careful inspection of the gap, welding of the outer part of the threshold begins, doing this from the middle pillar in both directions. As the experience of most car owners shows, parts of the VAZ 2101 body that are most susceptible to corrosion are located in hard-to-reach places where moisture does not evaporate for a long time (gaps, bends, flanges), namely:

  • wheel arches;
  • hinged elements and places of their attachment (hood, trunk, doors, sills, fenders).

To obtain optimal rigidity of elements with minimal deformation, it is best to weld parts every 50 millimeters, using small ties of 20 millimeters. As you have already noticed, do-it-yourself body repair of a VAZ 2101 is a very labor-intensive and responsible process, the quality of which directly affects the safety and service life of the car.

It is curious that the VAZ-2107 “Zhiguli” (LADA 2107), VAZ’s second-generation luxury car, appeared simultaneously with the front-wheel drive Sputnik/Samara family, and this was not a mistake. Most car enthusiasts in the USSR were still distrustful of front-wheel drive, which is why the “seven” turned out to be the most prestigious VAZ model in the 1980s. So, the “pure” seven, 2107, came only with a four-speed manual transmission and a three-liter one and a half liter engine with a carburetor power system. But today we are not talking about it, but about its first modification, the seven with an engine from the VAZ 2106, which received the factory index 21074.

Unlike the previous luxury models - VAZ-2103 and VAZ-2106 - the new model in this segment differed less from the “norm” VAZ-2105. Thus, its body differed only in a more aggressive shape of the radiator grille and taillights. The interior now features original design seats with integrated headrests and cold air deflectors (in winter, you can direct hot air to your feet and a stream of cold air to your face). The main innovations were a more powerful 1.6 liter engine with 76 hp. s., as well as a 5-speed gearbox, which first appeared on the “classic” model of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant.

Two years later, the model range was replenished with a station wagon based on the VAZ-2105, which received the index 2104. When creating it, the main principle was the minimum cost of change - compared to the prototype. Hence some of the features: for example, the body of a station wagon is less rigid than a sedan, although according to operational requirements it should be the other way around. The “Four” quite quickly replaced the previous station wagon VAZ-2102 and for more than 15 years, until the appearance of the VAZ-2111, it remained the only model from Togliatti with this body type.

It didn’t work out that way with the “seven”. In theory, with the advent of the VAZ-2107, it was necessary to discontinue the previous luxury VAZ-2106, but for some reason the models continued to be produced in parallel. In the 1990s. The VAZ-2107 maintained its position as a luxury model, and only in the new century did this position become ambiguous. The car could no longer be considered a luxury model, since it was morally outdated compared to the VAZ-2110 and was much cheaper than the latter.

By this time, the VAZ-2107 “Zhiguli” (LADA 2107) was equipped with an engine with central fuel injection, which made the car the fastest Volga classic of all time. Combined with an aggressive “timeless” design, this gave it the image of an inexpensive car for family youth with sporting inclinations. And yet, AvtoVAZ understood that the backward model had a detrimental effect on the company’s image, although it attracted many buyers. Therefore, the plant began a policy of “removing” the VAZ-2107. In 2002, the license for its production was sold to the Ukrainian LuAZ, and in 2003 the main production was transferred from VAZ to Syzran. Since then, the “seven” have gathered anywhere - in Egypt, Chechnya, Ukraine, Izhevsk - just not in Togliatti.

The Quartet also underwent similar “migrations”. Now these two models are the last Russian successors to the Fiat 124 remaining on the assembly line and in demand for an unbeatably low price. Over their long life, the cars were repeatedly modernized, and after the assembly line “death” of their ancestor - the VAZ-2105 - they became even more similar. Based on its geometry, the niche between the side members begs for a kind of organizer for tools, spare parts and small items, which you can easily assemble with your own hands from chipboard or pressed plywood. The cover of this organizer will be a false floor. The result is two independent compartments - one for hardware, the second for luggage.

The design is quite simple to assemble. For assembly, you will need to cut five blanks (or more, depending on the desired number of niches under the raised floor):

  • 580x115 mm - three pieces, two of them will lie along the side members, and one will be a partition in the center;
  • 780x115 mm - will fit between the rear bumper mounting pipes;
  • 840x115 mm - the farthest side, between the thrust cups of the springs.

The structure is screwed together using furniture screws; the false floor itself, the size of the cover of the first tier, will be the same as the dimensions and contours of the perimeter of the resulting niche.

It is better to screw the hinges to it not in place, but by fixing the lid with several screws and removing the entire structure from the trunk, in a convenient place, on a workbench, for example. After this, you can sheathe the resulting organizer with any material - from leatherette to carpet. As a result, the trunk is always tidy, the floor is level and clean.
