The process of changing the oil in a Priora box
Since the gearbox is located near the engine, when the engine is running, both units heat up, including the oil. It is better to change the oil when the engine is warm, since in this case the liquid becomes more fluid and drains better from the most secluded corners, and all contaminants come out with it. Thus, if your car is cold, take the time to start it and take a short drive for 10-15 minutes. Idling does not count, since in this case the gears of the gearbox do not work, and the gearbox will remain cold even after the engine warms up to operating temperature.
Drain the oil
When starting work on replacing the fluid, you need to find out the required volume of oil in the Priora gearbox and buy lubricant in the store. Next, crawl under the bottom of the car and unscrew the drain plug, first replacing the prepared container. The used liquid will begin to drain. If necessary, you can dismantle the protection if you have one.
When unscrewing the plug, tear it with a key, and then continue to unscrew it by hand and carefully remove it without staining anything around it.
The oil will pour out quickly at first, and then the process will slow down. To speed up the process, pull the dipstick out of the upper hole, which will create a vacuum and the oil will completely drain.
Filling with new fluid
Before pouring new oil into the gearbox, do not tighten the drain plug and pour literally 50-100 g of lubricant into the filler neck so that it pours out from below, washing out the remaining old oil. Screw the drain bolt into place and thoroughly wipe everything with a rag, removing any smudges. Clamp it with a key and start pouring lubricant, but do not overdo it, otherwise you will have to drain it again or suck out the excess with a syringe. Pour out the lubricant gradually, checking the level with a dipstick.
What is the danger of overfilling the gearbox?
You need to figure out what the consequences of overfilling the oil in the Priora gearbox can be? First of all, the lubricant will begin to foam, the pressure in the system will increase and the oil seals and rubber seals will be damaged. Oil may also begin to escape through the dipstick hole.
To avoid oil overflow, do not rush to fill the box with the entire volume of lubricant recommended by the manufacturer. Fill most of it and leave the car for 10 minutes until the oil drains completely down, and then check the level again. If necessary, add fluid to the maximum mark.
Changing the automatic transmission oil
The working fluid in the automatic transmission is filled by the manufacturer for the entire service life of the vehicle. That is, we change the oil in the automatic transmission of a Lada Kalina 2 or Grant only when repairing the gearbox, replacing oil seals and gaskets, removing wheel drives, etc. It is recommended to check the level and change the oil in the automatic transmission (if necessary) at a manufacturer-certified PSSS. If you decide to change the automatic transmission oil yourself, then follow these instructions:
- Unscrew the drain plug (No. 2) and the overflow tube (No. 3) using a “19” wrench and a “5” hexagon.
- Drain the transmission oil into an empty container, install the overflow plug in place, and then tighten the drain plug and install a new O-ring on it.
- Pour about 1 liter of new oil into the dipstick hole.
Checking the oil in the automatic transmission should be done on a warm engine (at an air temperature of 20C, you need to drive for about 10 minutes for the oil to warm up to a temperature of 50-80C). Place the vehicle on a level surface, and then:
- With the engine running, move the gearbox lever from position “P” to “1”.
- switch from position “1” to “P”, holding the lever for 5 seconds in each intermediate position.
- remove the dipstick, wipe it and reinsert it into the automatic transmission until it stops.
- Remove the dipstick again and check the transmission oil level, which should be within the hot oil section “A”.
- if necessary, add oil.

Note! Since the gearbox is located next to the engine, when driving both the engine and the gearbox heat up, and accordingly the oil also heats up, so we recommend that you change the oil only when the engine is hot, this way it will drain much better and all the dirt will come out with it. if it suddenly turns out that your car is cold, then don’t be lazy and warm it up and you don’t need to stand still, but drive for a while, since the gears start working only when the car is driving at speed (Because of this, the box will heat up better), At idle, nothing will spin and, accordingly, the box will be colder when the engine warms up!
1. First, you will need to unscrew the drain plug from below, through it the used oil will drain into the container. If the protection suddenly gets in the way, then remove it (How to remove the protection, read the article: “Replacing the crankcase protection in a car”) otherwise the oil will it gets in and stains the protection, when you start to unscrew the plug, turn it with a wrench until it starts to rotate easily, then unscrew it with your hand (If you are wearing gloves, take them off, otherwise you will have to throw them away later, because they are covered in oil get dirty) and remove the plug, the oil will begin to pour out (place the container) at first it will be fast, then much slower, in order to create a vacuum so that the oil drains better from the box, also remove the dipstick from the upper hole (into which the oil must be poured) and then the oil will flow It flows faster and merges more completely.
Note! If metal shavings are found in the oil, then rinse the box, but if something more serious (Large particles of metal, for example), then we recommend contacting a service center, they will determine where exactly these particles broke off from (If from gears, then most likely the box You will have to repair the gears)!
2. Now we move on to pouring the oil, first pour a little new oil into the box (Just a little, using a special tool that had to be made, as we showed earlier) so that it pours out of the box and then tighten the drain plug ( Don’t forget to wipe it dry with a cloth) and as soon as the cap is screwed into place, you can safely fill in the oil, just don’t overdo it, otherwise you’ll have to suck out the excess with a syringe and you don’t need to fill in all the oil from the bottle at once, but a little at a time and check constantly You need a dipstick for the level, this way you will never overfill and there will be no problems in the future.
Additional video clip: Watch a video clip that, using the Lada Priora as an example, shows how the oil in the gearbox is changed in such cars; additional information will not be superfluous for you.
Each car is equipped not only with engine oil, but also with transmission oil. If the first one needs to be changed every 10,000 km, then with the second the situation is different. The oil in the Priora gearbox must be changed every 75,000 km, and if the car has not reached this mark in 5 years, it must be replaced earlier.
Quality of transmission oils
Lubricant is squeezed out through the gaskets. The kinetic viscosity index is significantly low and affects the transmission in general. Dynamic viscosity - at low temperatures, in winter the shear resistance of the grease is performed. This is a rather bad indicator for transmission operation.
The transmission oil in the Lada Priora gearbox is checked according to the maintenance regulations after 15,000 km and when leaks are detected on the gearbox housing. To check, the machine must only be in a horizontal position, on a level plane. The motor must cool down. There is a hole at the top of the gearbox for the oil level indicator (dipstick). There are marks on it that will show the amount of oil.
Changing the gearbox oil
Changing the oil in a Priora gearbox with your own hands will require preliminary preparation from the motorist. First of all, having purchased everything you need, you should park the car in a garage equipped with a pit, on a lift or overpass. After access to the bottom of the vehicle is gained, using a screwdriver or wrench it is worth dismantling the fastening of the power unit mudguard.
After removing the cover from the transmission drain hole, the motorist should place an empty 5-liter tank under it, which will help contain all the waste that comes out. Removing the control hole plug will help optimize the process. By pulling out the dipstick, the car owner will reduce the pressure in the structure. Sometimes at this stage it is necessary to dismantle the air filter housing.
If a motorist has decided when to change the oil in the box, he must first familiarize himself with all the theoretical information. In particular, prepare the tools, because without a “17” wrench it will be impossible to unscrew the cap covering the drain hole. It will take 10 - 15 minutes for the glass to lubricate the transmission, during which time it is advisable to clean the plug
It is important to remove absolutely all wear products from it. At the same stage, you should check and, if necessary, change the seal to eliminate the possibility of leakage
After completely draining the lubricant, you need to check its condition; a normally functioning substance should be indicated by a light color, a burning smell, and the absence of impurities and debris. If there are any complications, the structure needs to be cleaned. With the filler hole closed, a special product is poured into the unit. There are many cleaners on the market today; you can choose any according to your capabilities. For cleaning you will need about 1.5 liters. substances. As soon as the liquid enters the unit, the front of the vehicle should be positioned so that the wheels are raised, this can be done using a jack. When the power unit is activated, the first gear is turned on, and you need to drive with a gentle pressure on the gas pedal for a couple of minutes. The next step is to drain the substance again. If the contamination is severe, the procedure is repeated.
After the dipstick leaves the control neck, you can begin to supply fresh lubricant into it. The peculiarity of the Lada Priora is that it will be possible to fill in new lubricant only using a syringe with a transparent pipe. In this case, one part of the hose should be in the control hole when the second is replenished with a syringe. It can take quite a long time to fill the 3.1 liter tank. oils In any case, the volume of liquid supplied must be regulated by the dipstick.
Once everything is done, the meter should take its place. Previously dismantled parts of the system have been reinstalled. Correct operation should be checked by a test drive and the opportunity to make sure that the level of the new fluid is in the required range.
Changing the oil in manual transmission and automatic transmission
The oil change in the gearbox of Lada models should be done every 75 thousand km, or after 5 years, whichever comes first.
The process is not complicated and will take no more than an hour. About the volume of oil in the gearbox. Depending on the type of manual transmission, different amounts of gear oil may be required:
- Manual transmission with traction control drive - 3.1 liters.
- Manual transmission with cable control drive or AMT (robot) - 2.25 liters.
You will need: a set of wrenches, new gear oil, an empty container, a funnel and a hose. Warm up the oil in the gearbox (drive 5-10 km) so that it becomes less viscous.
Procedure:
- We find the drain hole on the gearbox housing from the bottom of the car and unscrew it using a “17” wrench.
- We drain the old gear oil into an empty container, which we place under the drain hole.
- We fill in new transmission oil through a hose that we insert (depending on the type of manual transmission): instead of a dipstick (for convenience, the air filter housing can be unscrewed and moved to the side), or instead of the reverse switch, which we unscrew with a “22” key.
Attention! If the oil drained from the gearbox is dark in color and metal particles are visible in it, the gearbox should be washed. Pour 1-1.5 liters of special flushing oil into the box crankcase. With one of the front wheels hanging, start the engine and shift into gear. After 5-7 minutes, drain the flushing oil and fill with clean transmission oil.
Depending on the type of manual transmission, checking the oil level in the gearbox is carried out:
- using the dipstick (the oil level should be between the MIN and MAX marks).
- through the inspection plug (the oil level should be at the lower edge of the inspection hole).

Replacement frequency and lubricant selection
The manufacturer has determined that oil changes in the Priora gearbox are required at intervals of 75 thousand km. This is a fairly large gap, designed for the fact that synthetic-based oil will be poured into the box. The conditions in which the vehicle is operated often dictate a reduction in this interval. For example, the car constantly “walks under a trailer” or with increased loads on the transmission.
Then it is better to remove the oil level dipstick as often as possible and monitor not only the lubricant level, but also the technical condition: contamination and fluidity, especially if the service mileage is more than 50 thousand km. Another reason for early replacement of the lubricant in the box can be buying a car second-hand without marks in the service book. The answer to the question of what kind of oil to pour into the Priora transmission should be sought first of all in the car’s operating instructions.
Traditionally, AvtoVAZ recommends products for use. Lubricant produced by the same company is poured into the gearbox of new VAZ cars; it acts as a break-in and flushing lubricant until the first maintenance; after replacing it, you can select a product from another company. Here are brief recommendations on how to choose the right gear oil for the VAZ 2170.
- The viscosity grade must correspond to that specified in the operating instructions.
- It is not recommended to use mineral based oil. The service mileage determined by the manufacturer is accepted for synthetic or semi-synthetic oils. When pouring mineral water, you will not be able to correctly determine the service interval, because the mineral base deteriorates faster than the synthetic one.
- It is preferable to purchase liquid lubricants from official dealers located in your city. This may also be useful in an unusual situation, when you need to add oil to the gearbox due to a leak. A sales representative will help you choose the right brand of oil for topping up.
- You should not add various additives and additives to your gear oil. As a rule, all the necessary additives are already present in the lubricant; nothing else is needed.
- Before purchasing, you should read reviews about this product. This can be done on the Internet, filtering out rave reviews from agents selling lubricants.
We present the types of all-season gear oils according to the SAE classification in the table.

SAE 75W - 90
What oil is best to pour into the Priora gearbox?
The optimal value of the transmission fluid viscosity index for a Lada Priora car varies between 75W-80 and 75W-90. Both indicators provide the best gearbox lubrication at temperatures from – 40°C to + 35°C and + 40°C.
Based on their basis, fuels and lubricants for gearboxes are divided into:
Let's talk about each variety in order.
Mineral
The cheapest option. Quickly loses its properties. Often causes plaque to form on seals. As the temperature decreases, the viscosity changes sharply - up to critical thickening. This can lead to premature wear of parts and failure. Such lubricants have to be updated more often - every 35-40,000 km.
Semi-synthetic
Intermediate. The samples have improved performance compared to mineral water, but are significantly cheaper in price than synthetics. Recommended for owners of cars with impressive mileage. For new models, it is better to choose a more expensive and high-quality option. Must be replaced every 45-50,000 km.
Synthetic
They have better fluidity and have a large number of additives. They are less dependent on temperature indicators and can perform well even in the winter season. They are expensive, but it’s better not to skimp on the gearbox. Ideal for operating a car in difficult conditions, with sudden temperature changes and increased loads on the mechanism. Replacement period is 65-70,000 km.
It is very important to use only high-quality fuels and lubricants. By ignoring the advice of the manufacturer and mechanics, you risk developing noise in the gearbox and difficulties during operation.
The use of options that are obviously not suitable for the Priora or are used to refuel the engine is strictly prohibited. Therefore, you should purchase transmission fluid from authorized dealers or trusted retail outlets.
Taking good care of your vehicle will extend its lifespan and increase the vehicle's performance. Timely contact with specialists will help you save on vehicle repairs. Do not forget about preventive procedures and check the level of fuel and lubricants regularly.
In this article, we told you why to add lubricant, what kind of oil to pour into the Lada-Priora gearbox, and found out why it is useful to listen to the factory’s recommendations for refueling the gearbox. Remember that the transmission is one of the most important components of your car. Monitor its condition and contact a technician when the first signals indicating a malfunction appear.
Correct operation of the Lada Priora car transmission is possible only with high-quality lubrication of its internal components and parts. The lack or use of used fluid will cause serious problems in the functioning of the gearbox, so every car owner should sometimes change the oil in the Priora gearbox.

Comments and Reviews
When to change the oil?
The period for changing the oil in the Priora gearbox is clearly regulated by the manufacturer. According to the data provided by the developer, both synthetic and semi-synthetic substances are subject to partial or complete replacement after the car has covered 75 thousand km. The same source advises checking the condition of the transmission lubrication and, if necessary, replacing it only after 5 years; however, it is worth taking into account other parameters, not only the service life. Since the majority of domestic cars are operated in harsh conditions, changing the lubricant after 50 thousand km will be a guarantee of safety for the transmission.
It is worth noting that it is not always possible to rely on mileage or regulated replacement every 5 years. The vehicle will need new lubricant a little earlier if various deposits have accumulated in the substance used (loss of properties), a burning smell is felt in the car (intensifies when inspecting the control hole of the gearbox), difficulties are encountered with switching the lever, the unit is noisier, vibrations are noted in the lever area .
Changing the oil in the Lada Priora gearbox
Before you begin the replacement, you need to warm up the gearbox. This will make the old transmission less thick and will flow better. So, place the car over a hole or on an overpass, and follow these steps:
- Place any container under the gearbox to avoid contamination of the ground or floor.
- Use a wrench to remove the drain plug, then carefully unscrew it by hand. Be careful, the liquid is hot and can cause burns!
- Wait until the transmission is completely drained.
- Pour 100 grams into the filler hole to wash away the remaining old liquid in the box. Do not tighten the drain bolt when doing this.
- Tighten the drain bolt and fill the transmission oil to the required level.
The first time after replacement, periodically check for leaks and listen to the operation of the gearbox. This will help to avoid troubles that may arise due to mistakes made when replacing the transmission.
Transmission fluid selection
Boxes of new VAZ cars (manual or automatic transmission) are filled with materials from. This lubricant acts as a flushing and break-in lubricant. The oil in the box needs to be changed during the first maintenance. Then you will have to select a new lubricant product
In order not to make a mistake with your choice, it is important to pay attention to:
- viscosity index corresponding to the operating instructions;
- service mileage, focused on semi-synthetic or synthetic oils;
- reliability of service centers or dealers offering lubricants;
- no need to add additives or other means to improve gear shifting: modern high-performance transmission substances already contain the necessary ingredients;
- reviews from car enthusiasts: they will tell you which oil is best.
Synthetics have the longest service replacement intervals. It retains lubricating properties at different temperatures. However, synthetic lubricant should not be poured if there is a risk of damage to the sealing materials.
The optimal viscosity index of transmission oil for Priora is marked 75W-80 or 75W-90. Both products with these designations provide lubrication at -40°C. The maximum ambient temperature for the first option is limited to +35°C, for the second – +45°C.

The gearbox oil should be changed every 30,000-40,000 km - if you have a manual gearbox, and 50,000-60,000 km if you have an automatic transmission. In my case, the rear gear crunching was heard and the second gear began to work hard. The dipstick showed the oil level at a minimum, although it should be between the minimum and maximum stripes. If it is below the minimum, then you should think about changing it, otherwise the parts will wear out and crumble. Choice of oil? Which one should I fill? Let's see what the manufacturer advises us:
Many people use ZIC oil (made in Korea) and other oils. Although it costs a little more, I didn’t see the point in overpaying. Now let's look at the labeling. SAE class and winter-summer temperature range (in °C): 75w-80 – from -40 to +35°C; 75w-90 – from -40 to +35° C; 80w-85 – from -26 to +35° C; 80w-90 – from -12 to +45° C. Here, transmission lubricants were classified by quality. The letters indicate the quality and area of use of the oil, and the numbers indicate the temperature regime. Temperature limits when using synthetics increase. Since my region is northern, my temperature range ranges from -40 to +35, then either 75w-80 or 75w-90 will suit me. Mineral lubricants do not have this feature. When lubricants are used in the transmission, fluctuations in the physical composition begin. Oxidation of a mineral base occurs faster than a synthetic one. For this reason, the mineral base ages faster. Mineral lubricant is changed more often. Transmission devices will wear differently. So we take either semi-synthetic or synthetic, whichever you can afford. I took semi-synthetic gear oil from Rosneft 75w 90 GL4/5 with a volume of 4 liters.
What you need for work: 1. Open-end wrench size 17 (socket wrench is most convenient). Price: 125 rubles (420 tenge) 2. Funnel and hose 1.0-1.5 m long (for filling oil). Price: 125 rubles (420 tenge) 3. Jack (or inspection hole/overpass). 4. Empty container for draining old oil (3-4 liters). 5. Gear oil 4 liters. Price: 1150 rub (3900 tenge)
Engine lubrication system of Lada Priora (16 valves)
The lubrication system on Lada Priora (VAZ-2170) cars is designed like in most modern cars. Oil accumulates in a sump, from where it is pumped as needed by a gear-type non-separable oil pump through an oil receiver. After passing through the filter, oil under pressure enters through special channels into the lower part of the engine, lubricating the crank mechanism from the inside and the surface of the cylinders from the outside. The oil in the cylinder is removed by oil scraper rings and returns to the sump. At the top of the engine, it is supplied to the cams and camshaft bearings, after which it flows down.
In the event of a malfunction of the oil pump or depressurization, the pressure sensor transmits to the critical pressure lamp on the instrument panel. If you ignore the lamp, the engine can very quickly become unusable. To prevent this from happening, change the oil in a timely manner and check its level.
What oil is better to use?
At the factory, during the production of cars, specialists fill in transmission fluid Lukoil TM 412, but its use is allowed only for running in the car. According to the manufacturer's recommendations, after some time the car owner should change the substance to a more recent one, taking into account the parameters specified in the service manual. The manufacturer advises using synthetics or semi-synthetics that correspond to the viscosity class 75W-90.
But here a lot depends on the region of operation, especially if you add oil for the winter:
- 75W - such a product begins to crystallize at a temperature of -45°C, but its thickening occurs already at -30;
- 80W - the oil loses its properties at -15°C, as it begins to thicken, but the liquid completely solidifies at -30;
- a liquid with a viscosity class of 85W thickens already at -10°C, and it can solidify at a frost of -15.
As consumer reviews show, many car owners use Castrol 75W-90 Syntrax Universal or Zik Top oil with the same viscosity grade
It is possible to use products from other manufacturers; it is important that the liquid is of high quality
The RamaZ-Life channel provided a video that describes the problem of noise appearing from the gearbox of a Lada Priora car.
General information about gear oil
The manufacturer fills Priora with Lukoil TM 412 transmission oil from the factory. However, such a liquid is not suitable for further use as a base substance, so it is only poured for the period of running in the car. If you act in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, this lubricant should subsequently be replaced with another substance, taking into account the parameters specified in the vehicle’s operating manual. For the Lada Priora transmission, it is preferable to choose synthetic or semi-synthetic fluid with a viscosity class of 75W-90.
All factory recommendations should be taken into account; the oil in the Priora gearbox should depend on the region of operation. It is extremely important to take a responsible approach to the choice of lubricant that the car will consume in the cold winter. If you buy a product labeled 75W, you should be prepared for the fact that the oil will begin to crystallize as soon as the thermometer drops below -45° C. As for the 80W substance, it will show worse performance already at -15° C. The lubricant will thicken even earlier 85W (-10°C).

Experienced motorists advise purchasing Castrol 75W-90 Syntrax Universal lubricant (some car owners praise Zik Top 75W). The guarantee of the right choice will be the purchase of original high-quality oil.
Changing the gearbox oil
One of the best gear lubricants
It is advisable to plan an oil change after a long trip in a Priora car, so that the gearbox is warmed up. After removing the splash guard of the power unit, you need to clean the crankcase drain, unscrew the drain plug, drain the lubricant into a container and tighten the plug. Then you need to fill the transmission oil strictly to the required level. You cannot use lubricant of low quality or unsuitable for Priora, otherwise noise and crunching will occur when shifting gears. So what kind of oil should you put in the box? This question worries many car enthusiasts, and for good reason. In the market of modern lubricants, it is very difficult to make the right choice. Advertisers offer each of their products, but not all of them are of high quality. Synthetic gear oils can cause leaks through auto gaskets at high operating temperatures, which cannot be said about mineral oils. At low temperatures, the lubricant may become mobile. The higher the viscosity index, the less the oil thickness depends on temperature conditions and can be used at any time of the year. In summer, it is necessary to lubricate transmission units at high temperatures, and in winter, to promote safe rotation of gears at low temperatures. Approximate temperature ranges for all-season transmissions:
SAE class | External temperature range, °C winter/summer |
SAE 75w-80 | -40 to+35 |
SAE 75w-90 | -40 to +35 |
SAE 80w-85 | -26 to +35 |
SAE 80w-90 | -12 to +45 |
In this table, gear oils are classified by quality. The letters indicate the quality and area of application of the lubricant, and the numbers indicate the temperature regime. Temperature limits when using synthetic materials expand, which mineral oils are not capable of. When oils are used in transmissions, changes occur in their physical composition.
The technician replaces the lubricant in the gearbox
The mineral base oxidizes faster than the synthetic base and therefore ages earlier. Mineral oil needs to be changed more often. The wear of transmission units will be uneven. Semi-synthetics are the child of synthetics and mineral water. Some properties have been improved and the price has been reduced. Synthetics are an advance in comparison to mineral oils. Their physical and chemical properties are more uniform.
All these lubricants belong to the same technical group and can be selected by each car enthusiast at his own discretion. Individual assessment of products, payment for work on changing them, the desire to keep transmissions in working condition for as long as possible - all this will help you choose gear oil for a Priora car produced by AvtoVAZ
When purchasing a car, every driver should carefully read the Priora Operation Manual, where you can find the recommended brands of oils for the car and their characteristics. When choosing a lubricant for Priora, pay attention to the climatic conditions and intensity of use of the machine. Conclusions:
- if it is recommended to fill a Priora car with oil of a certain viscosity, this is what you should do, listening to the advice of AvtoVAZ specialists;
- To maintain the warranty on Priora, the gear oil in the gearbox must be mineral or semi-synthetic;
- high-quality lubricants can be purchased from official dealers;
- When choosing gear oil, always read customer reviews;
- never use oil additives; high-performance lubricants are the best solution for Priora.
Have a nice trip and don't forget to make the right choice!

Before draining the oil from the gearbox, you need to warm it up. You either need to drive for 15 minutes or drive 5-10 km. Then, within 15 minutes while the oil is hot, you need to drain it. Warming up the car on the spot will not help, you definitely need to drive it. Just in case, I put it in first gear and the handbrake. Jacked up the front wheel on the driver's side. I tightened the bolt with a 17mm wrench. I washed the bolt (so that I could insert a clean one later). I placed an empty container to drain the oil. The pressure was low and oil was poured into the protection. It’s most convenient, of course, to first remove the protection before draining the oil; I was too lazy to tighten a bunch of screws. I lowered the car from the jack and left it standing there for 30-40 minutes. Around the 20th minute, I took it off the program.
Then he jacked it up again and tightened the bolt. I wiped everything around the bolt that I was tightening with a dry rag in order to track any possible leaks, and poured oil through a hose with a funnel. After filling 3 liters, I began to periodically check the oil level with a dipstick. It took about 3.7-3.8 liters of oil. You need to fill in a little more than a strip at maximum so that the fifth gear does not dry out. I wiped the dirt off the dipstick with water and put it back in place. I got into the car and started turning the gears 3-5 times so that the oil would seep through everywhere normally. After this procedure, the box began to work softer and there were fewer sounds.
Any motorist knows that the correct operation of the entire vehicle depends on a large number of important factors, one of which is the transmission. You should not naively believe that this element of the system will be able to work tirelessly all its life without the participation of its owner. Just like other basic structures, the gearbox needs maintenance and replacement of consumables. If the car owner has a car such as a Lada Priora, he must periodically supply fresh oil to the box, which will improve the functionality of all internal components. If during the operation of the vehicle there is a lack of lubricant or the unit has been using used fluid for too long, the motorist may encounter a number of serious problems that will begin to “harass” the transmission. In the material below we will consider all aspects related to changing the oil in the Lada Priora gearbox.
How to replace it yourself?
You can change the oil in the gearbox of a VAZ Priora 16-valve 2020 and other model years with your own hands.
Tools and materials
The procedure for changing the substance occurs using:
- wrench 17;
- fresh lubricant;
- a syringe with a connected transparent tube;
- containers into which you will drain the “working off”;
- clean rags.
You can learn about changing the lubricant yourself and all the nuances that the car owner will encounter during the task from the video shot by user ValeRiaN.
Stages of work
How to drain and fill fresh oil in a Priora gearbox:
The car is driven into a garage with a pit, onto a lift or onto an overpass
This is important because you will have to gain access to the underside of the car. Depending on the fasteners, use a screwdriver or wrench to unscrew the engine mudguard fastenings. Set the splash guard aside. Locate the drain hole on your car's transmission
Place a container under it. Unscrew the plug of the control or filler hole, if there is one, or remove the dipstick from the neck, this will reduce the pressure in the lubrication system when draining the “working off”. If access to the dipstick is difficult, remove the air filter housing and move it to the side. Using a wrench, unscrew the drain cover. Be careful when unscrewing. At first, the oil will come out of the system in a thin stream, but after the plug is completely unscrewed, it will begin to flow under great pressure. Use gloves. It is advisable that when draining the fluid the engine is not cold, due to this the substance will be more viscous and will drain out of the transmission faster. While the oil is draining, visually assess the condition of the drain plug. If it is too dirty, clean it of debris and wear and tear. Check the condition of the seal; if it is badly worn, it is recommended to replace the part. Otherwise, you may encounter a problem with lubricant leakage. When the liquid has drained, assess its condition. If the gearbox is functioning properly, it should be free of metal dust and other impurities. The presence of deposits indicates contamination of the unit, so it is recommended to wash it. To clean the transmission, the filler hole must be closed and flushing is performed using a special product. There is a large selection of such liquids; the product is purchased at a car store. To flush, pour about 1.3 liters of cleaner into the gearbox housing. Then the front part of the car must be hung, for this the wheels are placed on a jack. Start the engine and engage first gear, press the gas. Due to the fact that the front of the car is raised, you can drive in first gear for several minutes. After this, the procedure for draining the waste fluid from the system is repeated. If the flushing oil is too dirty after cleaning the unit, the procedure must be repeated. After this, wipe the drain and fill plug again. Remove the dipstick from the inspection neck to check the level. Now you can fill it, it is done through the control hole. You must pour fresh oil into the transmission using a syringe with a connected pipe, otherwise you will not be able to refuel the unit. One end of the hose is inserted into the control hole, on the other side the liquid is supplied into the system using a syringe. About 3.1 liters of oil is poured into the gearbox, the volume of the substance is controlled by the dipstick. When the filling procedure is completed, install the meter in place. Reinstall all previously removed components in reverse order. When the process is complete, take a test drive of the machine and check the lubricant level again.
View from the outside
A convenient and comfortable Priora car is one of the budget representatives of the sedan class. Manual transmission two-shaft, 5-speed. The box is assembled from three parts (sealant is placed between them): clutch housing, gearbox housing, rear cover.
A magnet located in the clutch housing socket holds metal debris and shavings. The drive gears of the input shaft are meshed with the forward gears. Oil is supplied to the driven gears through the hollow secondary shaft. It houses the forward gear synchronizers.
This unit is well assembled. And the synchronizers on the main switches are proof of this. Their operation is clearly adjusted, which reduces wear on the mechanical connection and noise when shifting gears. Accordingly, more durable operation of the Priora gearbox is ensured. But while monitoring the oil level, we should not forget that the quality of Russian roads leaves much to be desired. And this is one of the reasons for more frequent lubricant changes.
Leaks on the gearbox housing are also a motivating signal to action.
In order to check the transmission oil level, you must first place the car on a flat surface. Wait until the engine cools down completely. Remove the dipstick from the hole in the top of the box. Wipe it with a clean dry cloth and put it back
Then take out the dipstick again and pay attention to the marks located on it. The level should reach the maximum value
Visually assess the quality of the work. The main thing is not to miss the time when you need to pour new oil into the box.
Checking the lubricant level in the Lada Priora gearbox with a dipstick
The oil itself has two components: a base and an additive package. If the chemical composition of the base (base) is responsible for the property of the material, then additives correct the performance characteristics. This includes maintaining a certain temperature. The working fluid must not foam!
Playing the role of a lubricant, the oil also serves as a “broom”, cleaning the gearbox from technical debris.
List of recommended oils for Priora
The Tolyatti Automobile Plant prematurely gave its answer: “what to fill.” A whole list has been compiled of what can be poured into the Lada Priora gearbox with justification - a link to standards that confirm the quality of the product of each manufacturer.
The list of recommended automotive lubricants for the Lada Priora gearbox is as follows:
- Rosneft KINETIC 75W-90 from 40 to 35; 80W-85;
- Novoil Trans KP 80W-85;
- Lukoil TM 412 75W-80, 75W-85, 75W-90, 80W-85, 80W-90;
- THK Trans KP 80W-85; THK Trans KP Super 75W-90;
- Tatneft Translux TM4-12 75W-85;
- Shell Spirax; Shell Transaxle Oil 75W-90;
- Trans KP-2 80W-85.
An important clarification regarding API groups: for almost all oils this is GL4, with the exception of Rosneft Kinetic 75W-90, Shell - they correspond to GL 4/5. The difference in viscosity is as follows:
- 75W is the degree of viscosity at which the crystallization (freezing) temperature is -45֯С, and begins to thicken at -30֯С;
- 80W is the degree of viscosity, which corresponds to a crystallization temperature of -30°C, and it begins to thicken at -15°C;
- 85W is the degree of viscosity for which crystallization begins at -15֯, and already at -10֯ it thickens.

As with any car, the Priora needs to select fluid based on the climatic conditions in which the car is operated. Let's consider several examples of the relationship between viscosity and operating temperatures:
- If operating temperatures are in the range from -10⁰C to +40⁰C, then it is recommended to use a “transmission” with viscosity parameters 15W40
- At temperatures from -25⁰C to +40⁰C it is better to use a liquid with a viscosity of 10W. This viscosity is one of the most popular in the middle zone.
- At temperatures from -30⁰C to +40⁰C it is recommended to use 5W oil
- At temperatures from -30⁰C to +25⁰C it is recommended to use 5W oil
- The 0W setting is designed for cold conditions - up to -35⁰C.
As you can see, the temperature ranges are not very different. But the more accurately you select the brand of oil for your engine, the longer it will “live.” After selecting the brand and viscosity of the lubricant, you can begin replacement.
What kind of oil should I pour into the gearbox?
In summer, at high temperatures, it is necessary to lubricate the gearbox, and in winter, it is necessary to help the wheels rotate safely at low temperatures. Below are the transmission intervals for all seasons
Pay attention to the SAE class and the winter-summer temperature range (in °C):
Here, gear lubricants have been classified by quality. The letters indicate the quality and area of use of the oil, and the numbers indicate the temperature regime. Temperature limits when using synthetics increase.
Semi-synthetic is a cross between a synthetic and mineral base. Some qualities are modified and the price is less. The synthetic base is a success compared to mineral lubricants. Their attributes are more similar.

How many liters of oil are in the Priora box: manual transmission and robot
According to the advice of car enthusiasts, when replacing, it is worth filling 4 liters at once, and the technical regulations indicate that only 3.2-3.5 liters should be poured into a manual transmission. The automatic transmission is filled with 2-2.5 liters. Checking the oil volume in the gearbox of a Priora car (16 and 8 valves) is carried out not only if there is a suspicion of its deficiency, but also after replacement. This way you can test yourself.
There are two marks on the engine dipstick - maximum/minimum. The principle remains the same: if the marks are somewhere between two marks, everything is fine with the gearbox, and if they are stuck at a minimum, it’s time to top it up, or even think about replacing it - so that the transmission works with fresh fluid.
Recommended oil volume in a Priora box
A completely logical question arises - how much gear oil should be in the box of a Lada Priora car?
The official operating manual for the Priora gearbox states that the required oil volume for manual transmission 2180 is 3.1 liters, and for manual transmission 2181 – 2.2 liters.
However, in the same manual it is recommended to fill in a little more - literally 3-5 mm above the maximum mark. This is done for comfortable operation of fifth gear.
You should not pour much more than normal - if the machine's seals are not in the best condition, then excess liquid can squeeze them out and leak out. At a minimum level, there is a risk of manual transmission breakdown. In general, usually the amount of oil poured into the gearbox of a Lada Priora vehicle ranges from 3 to 3.3 liters.
