Fills the spark plugs on the injector of a VAZ 2109

How spark plugs work

Before you begin replacing or cleaning spark plugs, you should understand how these elements work. After all, as soon as the driver turns the key in the ignition switch, the “filling” of the analyzed components can begin:

  • the air-fuel mixture enters the combustion chamber and passes through the passage channels of the valves;
  • the valves, in turn, will be able to open if the starter’s rotational power is sufficient;
  • spark plugs produce a spark, which is sent by the ignition coil along high-voltage wires;
  • Thanks to the spark, a so-called explosion occurs, which affects each cylinder in turn, which allows the car engine to start.

If a spark does not form when gasoline is supplied, the system will be forced to repeat the entire starting process, and every time you try to start the engine, the spark plugs are filled with fuel. As a result, the wet element simply will not be able to produce a spark, so the car will simply not be able to start.

Why does this malfunction occur most often in winter? Because the air-fuel mixture cools greatly.

And the more the mixture cools, the more difficult it will be for the candle to light a spark, even if it turns out to be fully operational.

Why is this happening

The operation of injection engines, where the mixture is formed in the volume of the fuel rail, is always controlled by a special controller. The control unit in question is also called “ECU”:

The injection engine will not start without an ECU

The program installed in the unit’s memory constantly determines how many milliseconds each of the injectors should open. The longer the nozzle is open, the richer the mixture is formed. And in winter, at low temperatures, the controller strives to enrich the mixture to the maximum.

And then the following happens:

  • The concentration of gasoline in the mixture turns out to be maximum, but the temperature of the fuel and air remains lower than typical for the summer period;
  • Compression in the cylinder, due to worn parts, may be insufficient;
  • If there is carbon deposits on the spark plug contacts, sparking does not occur as the developers expected.

In total, these three factors lead to the following result: the fuel does not burn, but gets onto the spark plug contacts. As a result, sparking stops, and then, when you try to start the engine, gasoline is pumped into the cylinder. Then at a certain moment the fuel detonates.

When the spark plugs are filled with fuel, you can observe the same symptoms on any car. Starting does not occur during starter operation, but the driver will hear popping noises characteristic of such cases (the result of detonation).

What should a VAZ-2109 car owner do if the spark plugs are filled with fuel?

VAZ-2109 carburetor car owners can solve the problem of “filling” spark plugs in two ways:

  1. You can, of course, unscrew one of the spark plugs and buy exactly the same element, fully assembled, in specialized stores or at automobile markets.
  2. Take advantage of a more budget-friendly option and solve this problem yourself. This process is quite simple, so every car owner can cope with it if replacing and cleaning the spark plugs is carried out in stages:
  • all candles must be carefully unscrewed from the so-called “sockets” and ignited under the flame of a gas burner, holding them with ordinary pliers;
  • these elements need to be heated until the metal turns red in order to completely remove carbon deposits and any contaminants;
  • after warming up, you need to use fine-grained sandpaper to get rid of the film that forms during the oxidation process around the connectors;
  • Then all that remains is to screw the spark plugs into their original place, and the replacement process can be considered complete.

According to many experts, although such a process is considered economical, it will not help to operate thoroughly heated and cleaned components for a long time, since this process quite often damages the candle core, the basis of which is fragile ceramics. Therefore, if car owners decide on this replacement method, they must understand that, most likely, in the very near future the spark plugs may fail again, and they will have to repeat the whole process again. It is best to immediately buy a new set of components that match the markings and use them for their intended purpose.

After reading this article, every owner of a VAZ-2109 carburetor will be able to independently replace the spark plugs, clean and dry them, and, of course, install them in their original place. Such an event will not take much time, and if questions or difficulties arise during the replacement, you can simply watch a video tutorial on the Internet resource, which will further simplify the replacement of failed elements.

Cause of faulty spark plugs

Floods candles, most often during cold weather. Especially noticeable in late autumn. Sometimes it is possible to start the engine, but it runs erratically and for a short period of time. When you try to accelerate it (press the gas pedal), it stalls for a second and a sharp bang is heard in the exhaust pipe. This phenomenon is dangerous, as it can disrupt the ignition timing.

The first thing the driver does in this case is check the color of the spark plugs. The threads and electrodes are in most cases covered with black carbon and are too wet - all this means that the spark plugs are flooded.

In this case, it does not depend on what type of engine you have (injection or carburetor), the problem manifests itself equally in both engines. To determine the source of the problem, you need to understand how the engine starts.

The process of starting the engine is as follows: the starter spins the crankshaft flywheel and sets in motion all the important organs of the engine. These include the camshaft, valves, and at the same time, spark production begins at the ends of the spark plugs. At this time, the gasoline pump pumps a mixture of gasoline and air, which enters the combustion chamber. At the moment fuel is supplied to the chamber, a spark is formed on the electrodes of the spark plug (at the correct ignition timing), which ignites the mixture and creates a small explosion, which, in turn, moves the piston inside the cylinder.

It becomes clear that if a spark does not appear, then the mixture simply floods the spark plug, which is no longer able to produce a spark. Ultimately, it becomes covered with a layer of soot, and the remains of unburned gasoline explode in the exhaust pipe, creating an unpleasant sound that many car enthusiasts are so afraid of. This phenomenon is associated with a malfunction of the spark plugs, so before looking for the problem in other places, you should check for the presence of a spark. To do this you need to use a special gun.

Another problem is the composition of the mixture. If much more gasoline enters the combustion chamber than air, then oxidation will not occur. Eventually, the plug becomes filled with gasoline and is no longer able to ignite the mixture. In this case, the carburetor will need to be adjusted. The ratio of fuel and oxygen should be within the same limits. To do this, unscrew or tighten the bolts for adjusting the quality and quantity of the mixture.

In injection engines everything is much more complicated. The first problem is faulty fuel injectors. With prolonged use, their sealing material begins to deform and gasoline, accordingly, enters the combustion chamber even when the engine is stopped. Ultimately, the spark plug gets flooded, and starting the engine becomes quite problematic. The injectors undergo basic replacement.

Causes of the problem and a set of solutions

If the spark plugs are actually filled with gasoline when starting the engine, then you need to check how well the spark is being formed in the engine. You may have to unscrew each of the spark plugs sequentially, after first removing the high-voltage connectors. The ignition must be turned off. It is advisable to disconnect one of the battery terminals too.

Use a spanner for dismantling

What to check:

  • There should be no carbon deposits on the spark plug contacts;
  • The distance between the contacts must correspond to the “passport value”.

The bad news is that the cause of unstable spark formation can be poor quality wiring or any malfunction in the ignition control system. Sometimes finding the causes takes longer than eliminating the defect. In such cases, it is difficult to do without the help of professionals. Don't overestimate your strength.

By the way, you can try to reason logically. The controller regulates the concentration of the mixture based on air temperature values. And these values are determined according to the readings of a single sensor - DTOZH.

Any temperature sensor is a thermistor

We are, of course, talking about the coolant temperature sensor.

The readings from the antifreeze temperature sensor may actually be underestimated. Then don't be surprised if the mixture is too rich in fuel. The recommendation to fix the problem seems trivial. The sensor needs to be replaced.

Note that in modern engines, to calculate the mixture concentration, not one temperature sensor is used, but several. An air heating sensor installed in the intake manifold can also be used. But the presence of engine oil in the manifold is not uncommon. And imagine what will happen if liquid gets on the body of such a sensor.

The controller program is designed so that the main source of information about air temperature is the DTOZH sensor. In modern engines, where many temperature control elements are used, this statement is also true.

What to do if the candles are flooded?

If the spark plugs are flooded and you need to start the engine as soon as possible, then you can forget about all the above reasons and start the engine using several methods.

  1. This method is prescribed in many operating instructions. To do this, the spark plugs are unscrewed using the appropriate wrench and dried. For drying, you can use a regular gas stove. After the candles become dry, wipe them with a dry cloth, thereby eliminating new carbon deposits and screw them into place.
  2. The second option also came to us from old carburetor cars. The essence of this method is to dry the candles without dismantling them. The method works equally on both injection and carburetor engines. The gas pedal is pressed all the way to the stop, and the engine is spun up using the starter for 10 seconds. Thus, the gasoline supply is shut off, and the engine cylinders begin to be purged with air alone. In this short time, the candles have time to dry quite well. During the purging process, you must release the gas pedal. After this action, the engine can usually be started without problems.
  3. If all else fails, check for spark. To do this, one of the armored wires is pulled out and leaned against the cylinder head by 4-5 millimeters. Have an assistant turn on the car's starter for a short time. If a blue spark jumps between the wire and the cylinder block, then the spark plug is serviceable. However, there are spark plugs that may not work on a particular type of vehicle. Try installing new spark plugs. In most cases, this method almost always works. If there is no spark, then the fault lies either in the armored wires, or in the Hall sensor, or in the switch itself and the ignition coil.
  4. If the first start of the engine is unsuccessful, then you need to wait a certain pause. Usually it is 5-10 minutes. This is done in order to avoid flooding the candles. As for carburetor cars, experienced drivers recommend making the first start without closing the throttle. To do this, start the car without choke and vigorously press the gas pedal to give it the opportunity to warm up the combustion chamber. After this, the damper closes, and it is not recommended to touch the gas pedal.

These methods allow you to start the engine only when it is urgently needed. If your VAZ spark plugs flood quite often, then it is necessary to diagnose the fuel supply system and, if possible, repair or adjust it. Do not tighten under any circumstances, as if there is a non-combustible residue, the oil scraper rings will fail.

That's all. Perhaps, the whole range of measures is listed here that will help you revive and start the engine in the cold, even with flooded spark plugs. This event is carried out independently, so any driver should know about it.

You don’t know what to do because the carburetor on your VAZ 2109 is flooding the spark plugs? Then this recommendation article is clearly for you. As they say: whichever car you buy, it will be either a test or a pleasure. We can quite agree with this, but everyone chooses according to their financial abilities. And this is the main criterion.

Under what conditions will the spark plugs not be filled with gasoline?

In order to avoid suddenly encountering a similar problem in the garage in the morning, you should always keep your car in good technical condition. Conditions that exclude the occurrence of this problem are:

Finally, we note another popular method of prevention. According to it, you should regularly (3-4 times a week) increase it to the red scale (4.5-5 thousand revolutions) for 10 seconds so that self-cleaning of carbon deposits in the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine occurs.

Thus, we examined the factors of fuel formation in candles and learned ways to solve this problem.

If one fine morning you find that your car is difficult to start, or even the engine refuses to start at all, then most likely your spark plugs are flooded. In this article we will try to answer the question why the spark plugs on VAZ cars are flooded, and what to do about it? The solution to this problem is quite simple and can be done by any car enthusiast.

Concept and principle of operation

Filling the carburetor with spark plugs on a VAZ 2109, and you don’t know what to do? First you need to find out the structure and find out the location. The product is made of a ceramic base, inside of which there is a rod and a contact electrode on the side. A resistor is installed between them to level out radio frequency interference. The spark plug itself is screwed into the cylinder head.

Based on the design features of the location of the insulator and electrode, they can be divided into 2 types

:

  • Hot
    : the insulator area is much larger than that of a cold one, so it is heated by gases in the combustion chamber. The transition zone to the outer shell is minimal;
  • Cold:
    they have an elongated area for heat removal; accordingly, the working surface heats up much less.

There are a number of numerical and letter designations that indicate the ability to accumulate heat, the so-called potassium content. When purchasing, be sure to compare the data with the index table, or the catalog if you purchase in a specialized store.

Filling the spark plugs begins the moment you turn the ignition key.

  • A combustible mixture in the form of gasoline and air enters the combustion chamber in the ratio through the passage channels of the valves;
  • The valves opened due to the rotation of the starter;
  • The spark plug supplies a spark that was supplied by the ignition coil through high-voltage wires;
  • At this second, a micro explosion occurs in each cylinder in turn, which sets the engine in motion.

The reason for filling is precisely the lack of a spark at the time of fuel supply. Several such feeds and the spark plug is wet from fuel and cannot pass a spark, which means there is no ignition.

During frosts, the fuel mixture cools so much that the spark plug is unable to light, even if it is in good working order. Typically, the critical temperature is -15°C

.

Solving the problem of filling candles

The answer is simple:

It is necessary to unscrew the old spark plugs one by one, arranging them in the same sequence. Carry out visual diagnostics to identify defects. Then take one as a sample and go with it to the market or store to buy a new set (for subsequent installation).

Beware of fakes

buy only quality. Check new spark plugs for damage or defects. You'll have to mess with them again later. In such cases, ask for an immediate replacement of the product.

But what to do if the carburetor fills the spark plugs on a VAZ 2109 far from a populated area or store? In such cases, it would be possible to call a tow truck, but this is very expensive on the budget. You will have to do this: we also unscrew all the candles one by one and identify the flooded ones among them.

Using a dry and clean rag, clean the area of the electrode and insulator from carbon deposits and gasoline residues. This is described in more detail in the article “How to clean spark plugs.”

When a layer of soot forms

that cannot be cleaned with a rag, use a metal brush. Experienced motorists know how versatile this tool is. Once cleaned, screw it back in. Test the product.
