One shakes, the other won't start. But they both smell

A heavy chemical aroma settles in the lungs; our grandfathers, I remember, called this phenomenon “the smell of a new car.” When releasing the gas, the five-speed manual gearbox howls sadly - a VAZ sore familiar from the days of the G8. And in general, every action of the driver of the car is commented on: either the relay will click loudly under the panel, or something will crunch in the legs or creak pitifully. Quite quickly the understanding comes: inside this iron box you are one with her, and at the same time with the whole world, which clearly hammers stones on the arches and noises outside the window, as if there were no glass in the openings at all. In this sense, Lada and Datsun are similar, although on-DO, due to the thoroughbred non-studded Michelin X-Ice (“Grant” was worn in the Nokian Nordman RS2), the rustling tires are a little quieter. After restyling, Granta gained improved aerodynamics, but the wind apparently doesn’t know about it - everything is still buzzing in your ear.

Prices and options

Difference between Datsun and Lada Granta

The Lada Granta 2020 model year is presented in four versions: “Standard”, “Classic”, “Comfort” and “Lux”, and the Datsun on-DO 2020 is available in six: “Access”, “Trust I”, “Trust II” , "Trust III", "Dream I" and "Dream II". The basic Granta “Standard” with a 1.6-liter 8-valve engine (87 hp) and a 5-speed manual transmission costs 444,900 rubles, and the DO “Access” in the same modification 1.6 (87 hp

) 5MT - 485,000 rubles, that is, 40,100 rubles. (9%) more expensive. For this price, rivals received: ABS, a driver airbag, ISOFIX child seat mounts and the Era-Glonass system. The Japanese sedan, unlike its competitor, is also equipped with heated front seats, electric power steering and height adjustment, but it is unlikely that this functionality will more than compensate for the difference in price.

As for the versions equipped with an automatic transmission, it is worth noting that the Lada Granta 2020 can be equipped with a 5-speed “robot” or a 4-speed “automatic”, and the Datsun ON-DO 2020 can only be equipped with a 4-speed transmission. Granta “Classic” with the mandatory “Optima” option package (air conditioning, heated side mirrors), 1.6-liter 16-valve engine (106 hp).

) and a 5-speed “robot” costs 546,500 rubles, and in the “Comfort” version with a 1.6-liter 16-valve engine (98 hp) and a 4-speed “automatic” - 596,500 rubles. Datsun on-DO “Trust I” 1.6 (87 hp) 4AT is offered to buyers for 567,000 rubles, that is, 29,500 rubles. (5%) cheaper than “Comfort”.

In these trim levels, in addition to the previous ones, the following appear: a front passenger airbag, power windows for the front doors, central locking, electric drive and heated exterior mirrors. This is where the list of options for the “Japanese” ends, and the “Russian”, in addition to the equipment of the opponent, is also equipped with air conditioning.

Let's skip the remaining intermediate configurations and take a closer look at the top versions of our opponents. Lada Granta “Lux” 1.6 (98 hp) 4AT costs 634,800 rubles, and Datsun ON-DO 1.6 (87 hp) 4AT costs 662,000 rubles, that is, 27,200 rubles. (4%) more expensive. Both cars received: a security alarm, a dynamic stabilization system (ESC), rear parking sensors, climate control, an audio system, cruise control, power windows on all doors, 15-inch alloy wheels, light and rain sensors.

What is the difference between Lada Granta and Datsun On-Do

Most experienced drivers initially pay attention to the engine. It’s not for nothing that the power plant is called the “heart” of every car, and based on data about the engine, you can make a full conclusion about the car’s performance and other parameters. We start the comparison with this parameter in order to find out which is better from the Datsun or Grant we tested. So, the more powerful engine of the Russian car has 16 valves and a power of 106 hp, while the engine of the “Japanese” has 8 valves and a power of 87 hp.

The Lada is also equipped with parking sensors and has an excellent visibility function.

At first Granta was cheaper than the first version of Datsun, then everything changed. However, now, after the release of several updates to Japanese cars, a serious price advantage has appeared:

  • Datsun On-Do Dream – 455 thousand. rubles
  • LADA Granta – 423 thousand rubles. rubles

Many people are interested in the question, why does a low-power car cost more? It's all due to rebranding. Each model belongs to the class of budget sedans, and in terms of external parameters they practically do not differ from each other. Many believe that the Grant is better in this parameter, since it looks more harmonious than the elongated and ugly trunk of the Datsun.

Others, on the contrary, believe that the Japanese model has good casting and more solidity due to the front part, which is not typical for the Lada.

Specifications

The length/width/height/wheelbase of the Lada Granta 2020 vs Datsun on-DO 2020 is 4268/1700/1500/2476 mm vs 4337/1700/1500/2476 mm, that is, the “Japanese” is 69 mm longer than its competitor, other dimensions absolutely identical. The ground clearance is slightly higher for the “Russian” - 180 mm versus 174 mm for the competitor.

Now let's compare the dynamic characteristics and fuel efficiency of rivals. Acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h (gasoline consumption in city/highway/mixed modes) for Lada Granta 2020 vs Datsun on-DO 2020 is:

  • 1.6 (87 hp) 5MT - 11.6 s (9.1/5.3/6.8 l) vs 11.5 s (9.0/5.8/7.0 l);
  • 1.6 (106 hp) 5MT - 10.5 s (8.7/5.2/6.5 l) vs 10.5 s (8.8/5.6/6.6 l);
  • 1.6 (98 hp) 4AT / 1.6 (106 hp) 5AMT vs 1.6 (87 hp) 4AT - 13.1 s (9.9/6.1/7 .2 l) / 12 s (8.7/5.2/6.5 l) vs 14.4 s (10.4/6.1/7.7 l).

As we can see, the characteristics of modifications with “mechanics” are practically the same, but the comparison of cars with automatic transmissions was clearly in favor of the Russian model. Versions of the Granta, both with “robot” and “automatic”, have a significant advantage in dynamics and gasoline consumption.

Comparative characteristics

General Similarities

Both cars have a number of common similarities, despite the fact that they belong to model lines of different manufacturers. The main one is the use of the same platform for the two models, which originally belonged to Grant. Both cars are designed for 5 passenger seats with excellent interior ergonomics.

Both Datsun and Granta are perfectly adapted to the conditions of Russian roads and have a ground clearance of more than 16 cm. Thanks to this ground clearance, bumps and potholes on the roads do not create major obstacles for driving.

There are no significant differences in engine power in both models, and their volume is 1.6 liters, which puts them in the class of budget and economical cars.

Body and interior

When creating the Datsun on-DO, the Japanese took the Lada Granta as a basis

When developing the design of the Datsun body, Japanese engineers took the body of the Lada Grant as a basis, and they changed the shape of the bumper, radiator grille and headlights. In addition, the design of the rear pillar was modified and strengthened, and the body itself became longer by 77 cm, due to which the trunk volume increased to 530 liters, which is 10 liters more than that of the mother model.

Lada Granta car manufacturers are trying to take into account the needs of Russian drivers

The roof and doors have not undergone any changes - they are absolutely identical for both models. But with the wheels, things are different: the Datsun on-DO does not have 13-inch wheels, but they will be equipped with 14-inch stamped wheels or 15-inch wheels made of fusible metals.

The interior of the Datsun on-DO car has a more modern look

In the interior, the door panels, VAZ instruments, and microclimate control unit remained the same. Although the interior of the Datsun cabin has a slightly more modern look: the console and voluminous steering wheel hub stand out, somewhat reminiscent of Nissan, black shades of the interior with silver inserts, a modified upper plane of the panel, a new deflector, a two-diode audio system, Bluetooth, slots for USB and SD.

Cost of ownership

After purchasing a new car, the owner inevitably faces the cost of regular maintenance. So that the size of the costs does not surprise you too much in the future, we will calculate the cost of routine maintenance in Moscow for basic models from official dealers up to a mileage of 60 thousand kilometers (inclusive).

In conclusion, let's compare the cost of CASCO. In online calculators for calculations we will use cars worth 500,000 rubles with a capacity of 87 horsepower, which in St. Petersburg will be driven by a 45-year-old divorced man with one child and 25 years of driving experience. The price for the policy, depending on the company and type of insurance for Lada Granta 2020 vs Datsun on-DO 2019, is:

  • Zetta “Not guilty” - 14,000 rubles vs 14,000 rubles;
  • Renaissance Insurance “All inclusive” - 19,801 rubles vs 28,181 rubles;
  • MAX “Premium” - 40,200 rubles vs 40,200 rubles;
  • Liberty Insurance "CASCO Direct" - 44,180 rubles vs 44,000 rubles;
  • Surgutneftegaz "AvtoOne" - 69,984 rubles vs 86,280 rubles.

As a result, it turns out that the cost of protection against the risks of theft and damage is either approximately the same or significantly more expensive for a Japanese sedan.

Who is cooler: Datsun on-DO or Lada Granta

Both models are in fact made in Russia. Built on the same platform, they have common engines, transmission and suspension. The breakdowns are almost identical, pluses and minuses too.

However, in terms of the external design of the body, the Datsun clearly wins. The pronounced sharp edges of the front part, the embossed hood, the interesting radiator grille - all this leaves the Grant behind.

In terms of interior design, Datsun also wins. Its interior is more “advanced” and functional. And in Granta, the “lamb” controls for the stove still migrate from model to model, just like on the “classic”.

Lada Granta has an undeniable advantage in the variety of bodies from sedan and hatchback to station wagon, while Datsun on-DO is content with only one sedan body.

In addition to this, “Granta” earns additional points for the recent release of the second generation - this means that AvtoVAZ does not stand still, is improving, adding “robot” to “mechanics” and “automatic” - everything to satisfy even sophisticated buyers.

Summary

Lada Granta and Datsun on-DO are twin brothers, because the Japanese sedan was created on the basis of the Russian model. And therefore they are almost no different from each other. Currently, both cars are assembled in Togliatti. However, Granta is much more popular, and, as we see, absolutely deservedly so.

The basic and top-end versions of the Russian car will cost the buyer less. At the same time, the choice of engines and transmissions will be wider. And by purchasing a modification with an automatic transmission, the owner will be rewarded with better dynamics and lower gas mileage. And, of course, maintenance costs will be lower, and the price of the CASCO policy will be the same or significantly lower.

The opponent can only counter all this with its formally Japanese origin, more favorable prices in intermediate trim levels, greater safety and multimedia in the top version. But this is too little to impose a serious fight in the maximum budget segment. Therefore, at the end of 2020, Datsun on-DO is unlikely to be able to close the gap with its rival, rather the opposite.

Look like brothers

With the advent of the new Japanese subcompact Datsun on-DO, the domestic buyer faced a dilemma: should he give his preference to a semi-foreign car or opt for the VAZ Lada Granta? In this review, we will try to determine which of them - Datsun or Granta - will prevail on the vast expanses of Russian highways in the near future.

Datsun on-DO and Lada Granta cars - are they the same in everything?

The thing is that when creating Datsun on-DO, it was Granta that was taken as the basis. It should be understood that they do not have such big differences, especially from the technical side. Although, of course, each of them has individual characteristics. A detailed examination of each of the characteristics will help us understand how the Datsun differs from the Granta.

Datsun or Granta

In many aspects, the Japanese new product is better than the Lada, but it also has its drawbacks. Take the 8-valve engine, for example. Although some will find it better than Grant’s gluttonous 16-valve brother.

If we compare cars of equal modifications and trim levels, the newcomer has moldings on the doors, and the mirrors, handles and door pillars are painted in body color.

From the very beginning of production, On-Do installed a tensioner on the alternator belt, which is very convenient. The seals around the entire perimeter of the car have been improved and are of higher quality than those of the donor. This is easy to notice if you open both front doors completely - the seams of the torpedo fit tighter and more clearly. In Granta, a metal bolt is visible through them.

There are annoying nuances, such as a crooked warning sticker or an easily scratched instrument panel. But gradually manufacturers began to add all these advantages to the new Granta models - liftback, sedan.

Minor improvements in the handling of the On-Do, compared to the Lada, are a reduced background force on the steering wheel and better stabilization at low degrees. Especially the latter is very pleasing, since on Grant such a function is very intrusive and often annoying.

Experts who conducted a test drive of Datsun claim that this model has fewer disadvantages than the Lada Grant. What do you think? Why does everything that comes out of the VAZ assembly line seem to be subject to evil fate?

Lada Granta or Dastun on-Do - the choice is not easy, especially considering that this is, by and large, the same car. It's no surprise that potential buyers have a difficult task ahead of them. However, despite all the similarities, the cars also have differences, which, in fact, allow you to decide on a purchase.
