Repair and replacement of the handbrake on a VAZ (Lada) largus

What types of brakes are there?

  • tape;
  • drums;
  • disk.

Through “evolution,” the band brake was replaced by a drum mechanism. The principle of operation is the simultaneous rotation of a hollow drum with a wheel, which is bursting inside with pads. This slows down the car. This type of brake has proven itself well, but it also has disadvantages. With frequent heavy use, the drum overheats, since the ventilation in this closed system is not the same as that of a disk mechanism.

The disc brake system is the most reliable mechanism that eliminates the above-mentioned disadvantages of previous systems. Disc brakes work by rotating the disc simultaneously with the wheel, and when you press the brake pedal, the pads jam the rotation of the disc from the outside. Unlike the drum, the disc is ventilated, so it is less susceptible to overheating than the drum. The discs do not retain moisture and damaged parts. The operating principle of this system is based on the ability to work under heavy loads. Therefore, you can stop your car faster with disc brakes.

Due to the fact that the drum mechanism costs much less than the disk mechanism, today both disks and drums are used.

If nothing works out

The gap between the drum and the pads is adjusted automatically. But the value of the “ideal gap” can be changed! It is not possible to adjust the handbrake when this value is too small.

Remove the wheel, unscrew the nut - and you're done.

To set the gap, you need to remove the rear brake drum (how to do this without a puller here).

We will increase the “ideal gap”. To do this, the lever is removed from the ratchet (see figure), and the ratchet itself is turned upward.

The regulator can be rotated with a screwdriver

The reader may have noticed a discrepancy: the gap is increasing, which means the bar is “shortening”. And that means the ratchet had to be rotated to the right! Don't worry - this one uses left-handed threads.

Close the drums and apply the brake 10-15 times. The rear brake clearance will be adjusted and the handbrake adjustment can then be checked.

Operations for removing the tie rod end of Lada Largus

It is more convenient to do the work on a lift. You can also do it on a car mounted on supports. Replacing the tip is shown using the example of the left side rod; the right tip is replaced in the same way. The thread of the left tip is right-handed, and the right tip is left-handed.

1. Lift and support the front of the vehicle on the side of the tip being replaced.2. Remove the wheel. Brake the car with the parking brake and install wheel chocks (“chocks”) under the rear wheels. 3. Loosen the tie rod end locknut.

4. Unscrew the nut securing the hinge pin to the steering knuckle arm, holding the pin from turning.

5. Install the ball joint remover and press the pin out of the swing arm boss.

6. In the absence of a puller, the ball joint pin can be knocked out with sharp blows of a hammer on the end of the swivel lever boss, striking along the axis of the lever.

7. Roll the tie rod end off, counting the number of turns. If necessary, keep the rod from turning the flat with a key.

8. Install the new tip in the reverse order of removal, screwing it onto the steering rod by the number of turns that was calculated during removal (the tip must be screwed to the mark). The tightening torque of the lock nut is 50 Nm, the tie rod end ball nut nut is 37 Nm.9. Check and, if necessary, adjust the wheel alignment angles at a service station.

If there was no mechanical damage to the tip boot, then its service life until complete wear (ruptures, cracks, etc.) is commensurate with the service life of the pins, that is, the tip must be replaced entirely and cannot be repaired

Adjustment

How to make the adjustment:

  1. Make sure the wheels are chocked. Another option is to hang the rear axle on jacks;
  2. The handbrake must be released;
  3. Using a “10” wrench, turn the nut half a turn;
    10mm wrench
  4. Check that the number of clicks is now 6 (5, 4 - depending on what is needed). If necessary, repeat steps 2-3.

In the penultimate step, it is actually better to use a spanner. And most importantly - check the work done!

Pulling the handbrake on a Renault Logan is not an easy task. It is necessary to ensure that when the handle is released the wheels rotate freely. And at the same time, the handbrake must fix the car on the slope.

Selection of front brake pads for Lada Largus

Lada Largus can be equipped with two types of front brake pads: with and without ABS function.

They have different catalog numbers, so they need to be considered separately.

With ABS

The first ones have the ABS function. There are quite a lot of pads, from low quality to high quality. But we will only consider those that are recommended to be installed on a car.

Analog manufacturers provide a fairly wide selection of analogue brake pads for Largus, but Brembo, Fenox, FIT and Bosch deserve special attention in terms of quality.

Without ABS

The second version of the pads is produced for cars that do not have ABS function. 410608481R is the original catalog number of this product. The average market price in the Russian Federation is 3,000 rubles.

Let's consider what analogues can be installed instead of the original.

As in the first case, analog manufacturers produce a fairly large assortment of brake pads for Largus.

Recommendations and improvements

Some car enthusiasts, in order to improve the use of brake pads, replace calipers and discs with a tuning version. They are more efficient than factory ones. Some modifications may require replacing the hub, since the bolt pattern of the parts may vary.

Since the front brake pads last for a maximum of 20,000 km, some owners are not happy with this.

Instead of standard pads, you can install a sports kit from Brembo, which costs 1.5 times more, but also has a service life of about 40 thousand km, depending on driving style.

Using a screwdriver, prying up the decorative trim, moving upwards in the assembly with the fan, now you need to loosen the tightening of the clamps, disconnect all the hoses from the radiator, unscrew the bolts, replace steering tips on the Lada Largus, nuts that secure the casing with the fan and the radiator, disconnect the casing with the fan, you need to remove the two lower mounting pads from the radiator. In most cases, it is not necessary to completely cut the nut. Because, as has already been tested in practice, a standard rear shelf can fail and cannot support good music speakers.

If you are changing spark plugs for the first time on a new car, use a wheel wrench and some machine oil. After an accident, the most important structural part of the car undergoes changes; the geometry is disrupted, visible and invisible flaws appear, and the coordinates of the installation locations of body elements are shifted. You can check its performance by blowing it with your mouth.

If this does not happen, remove the fastening pins from the holes in the upholstery. A standard heater will provide heat in winter, but in summer you will really get sick if the temperature breaks. If the mass is bad, it will not be 0 volts at all. However, their barriers may differ significantly. Now the only thing left to do is to connect the levers of the racks to the tips and tighten all the fasteners. Buying disc brakes and simply installing them, without following clear rules, is dangerous and not recommended. The high physical and chemical properties of this material make it possible to produce many automotive accessories with unique functional properties. And the loads thanks to the airbag are small. Over the past year since the Solaris crash test, a lot has changed in the Czech laboratory 8212 it now belongs to Skoda, and acts as a subcontractor. You can even wash the box, but do it only from the outside.

What does Renault advise?

It may be necessary to tighten the handbrake on a Renault Logan in one case: if the rear pads were replaced and the adjustment was broken.

The drive cables do not stretch during operation, and there is no need to adjust their tension. This is what the Renault company itself thinks.

By making adjustments and not having the proper qualifications, you can get the following result:

  • Firstly, it is better not to change the ratchet settings at all - the gap should be the same on the right and left. And this will be difficult to achieve;
  • If the adjusting nut is overtightened, it will have to be unscrewed. But in order to unscrew it, you need to melt the plastic washer, which requires heating the entire assembly.

The last option is not implemented in garage conditions.

How to replace rear pads?

Let's move on to consider the sequence of actions when replacing the rear brake pads.

  1. Loosen the tightening torques of the wheel bolts on the rear axle.
  2. We hang the car (or part of it) using a suitable lifting device.
  3. The LADA Largus engine, of course, must be turned off and the handbrake deactivated.
  4. After removing the wheel from one side of the car, we find the brake drum. Let's dismantle it.
  5. Pads with or without ABS are placed along the edges of the mechanism. The parking brake activation lever directly interacts with one of them. A cylinder is located between the upper edges of the pads. We also observe the presence of springs and a spacer bar, which are necessary to be able to adjust the gap.
  6. We begin the disassembly steps by dismantling the tension springs, and we remove not only the upper one, but also the lower one. This manipulation can be conveniently performed with pliers. Don't forget about the guide springs.
  7. We proceed to removing the bar itself along with the mechanism that allows you to “select” the gap.
  8. It remains to remove the end of the parking brake drive cable.
  9. Now we remove the pads with or without ABS.
  10. Before installing new consumables, carefully clean all components of the assembly using a wire brush.
  11. When installing new pads in LADA Largus, you will need to assemble and install a mechanism that adjusts the gap, as well as return the handbrake cable tip to its position.
  12. When all the specified elements are installed on the mechanism panel, we tighten the tension springs and return the guide springs to their place.
  13. We put the drum on carefully, and upon completion we carry out the procedure for adjusting the gap between the already installed pads. To do this, press the pedal three times all the way. After a characteristic click appears, the mechanism switches to the “adjusted” status.

Replacement of the rear brake pads on the Lada Largus has been completed.

Parking brake device

Before replacing the handbrake cable or tightening it, you need to understand the design of the mechanism. It is designed quite simply and consists of the following main parts:

  1. Lever with spring-loaded button and latch. Located in the cabin on the right hand of the driver.
  2. A metal rod with a pin at the end and a rocker arm for installing the cable is located under the bottom of the car and attached to the lever. This is the “handbrake” tensioning device.
  3. The ends of the cable (or two cables), installed on the rocker arm, are attached to the brake levers of the rear wheels - disc or drum.

The parking brake works like this: when the driver lifts the lever in the passenger compartment, the rocker moves forward and acts on the pads through a cable drive. In drum mechanisms, the brake pads move apart, and in disc mechanisms, they converge. The “handbrake” holds only the rear wheels and functions independently of the main brake system, which is activated when the pedal is pressed.

Instructions for replacing the rear pads of a Lada car

In order to remove the pads, you need to fix the car on a two-post electro-hydraulic lift (which not everyone has, and in this case you need to find a service station). Raise the hand drive lever and turn off the engine. Next, remove both wheels. After this, release the handbrake. Now you can adjust the height of the car for convenience.

We begin disassembling the mechanism by removing the upper and lower springs that tighten the brake. Next, remove the springs on the spacer bar (using a screwdriver or pliers) and on the guides. After this, the assembled strip itself with the mechanism is detached, which regulates the gap. Finally, having removed the handbrake cable from the lever on the block, we disconnect the rear blocks of the Lada.

To install the pads, it is necessary to assemble the gap adjustment mechanism with the pads and the parking brake cable. Then we attach this structure to the brake drum of the Lada Largus. The final stage is to install the tension springs (lower and upper) and guide springs in place. Finally, we put on the drum and wheel, after which you should check the gap adjustment mechanism by pressing the pedal all the way 3 times. If a click appears, the mechanism is adjusted.
