The modern market for car devices offers a large selection of car radios with a range of completely different functionality. They come in different sizes and support removable media.
In what format should I record?
In a specialized store you can find video recorders with screens for watching clips and films. The more capabilities a receiver has, the higher its cost. The most common radios among car owners are Pioneer, Sony, Prology, Supra and others.
The radios can read optical discs (CD/DVD) or removable media (flash cards). Depending on whether the radio is equipped with input ports: a disk drive or a card reader. There are options that support any of the above media.
More advanced models offer connection to a phone via Bluetooth or aux port.
Almost all radios are equipped with a USB connector. Through it you can connect a flash card or MP3 player. It's comfortable. At any time you can record or erase the files you need, and you will never get tired of the music.
The choice of radio depends directly on your needs and capabilities. For music lovers, the presence of all ports is convenient. At any time you can download music to a flash drive from your computer or buy a new disc of your favorite artist in a music store.
Music is usually recorded in MP3 format. This format can be reproduced by all music recorders.
If you are using a USB device, you may encounter a number of playback problems. The main problem is that the “flash drive” is not readable. This is unlikely to mean that your device is broken.
Causes of playback errors:
- You may be using the wrong large flash drive. In the instructions for any radio equipped with a USB port, you can find information about the maximum volume of devices that can be connected. 90% of devices have a limit of up to 4 gigabytes.
- Choosing a flash drive with the wrong file system will also lead to inconvenience. A flash drive with FAT32 format will be suitable for the car. But more modern devices have high-speed NTFS file systems. Please pay attention to this when choosing a device for your car. If there is a file system error, the flash drive will not be read by the radio.
- Errors accumulated during use lead to the failure of your USB device. In this case, the files on the flash drive will be easily played on the computer, and the radio will not read them. In this case, only formatting and overwriting the files will help. If the “flash drive” cannot be read on the computer and cannot be played by the radio, it’s time to throw it away. Unfortunately, the device cannot be repaired.
Modern car radios can play almost any media file format. Excludes devices without a disk slot. Each format has its pros and cons.
The most popular formats for video files are DVD, SVCD and VCD. Top models have MPEG4 playback capabilities. Another popular format is MP5.
HD quality support is no longer installed on standard radios. The reason for this is the small screen sizes. Typically, screens have the largest size - 800x400 pixels. For example, to watch a video in 720p format, and for this the screen size must be at least 1280 x 720 pixels.
The AVI format combines audio and video data using high compression. Thus, avi files allow you to play high-quality video with good sound. The AVI format is simple and convenient for recording clips for a car radio.
To take advantage of the benefits of your video screen stereo, you will need to be sure to download the clips to your stereo.
The format of clips for the radio directly depends on the screen resolution and the ability of the radio to support this format.
The most popular formats for audio devices: CD and MP3. Some radios support AAC (.m4a) and VMA formats. Sometimes it is possible to support and read WAV files. Even if your radio tape recorder supports the MP3 format and is equipped with a DVD drive, this does not mean that it will read DVDs with recorded MP3 files. If you want good sound quality, choose the right file format and media. The best quality music can be obtained when playing from CD-audio.
MP3 is the most popular format for music data. But using this compression format, playback quality may decrease. Although the file size will be significantly smaller. If you use the CDA format, loss of sound quality can be avoided. But these will be large files that can be stored on CDs.
However, only a true music connoisseur can notice the difference between the sound of a CDA and an MP3 file if he has high-quality headphones.

How to download high-quality clips and music for your car radio?
If you are the happy owner of a high-quality and multifunctional radio with a large screen, then you will definitely want to download clips for the radio to your car.
You can record a free clip from youtube.ru on a Pioneer, Sony, Kenwood, JVS, Alpine, Mistery, Prology, Supra, Intro, etc. radio.
Instructions for downloading clips for the Pioneer radio from youtube.ru:
- Open the desired video on youtube.ru.
- Copy the link to it from the address bar.
- Go to the website onlinevideoconverter.com Select “Extract audio or video from URL”.
- Paste the copied link into the “Video link” field.
- In the “Settings” field, select the desired video format. avi format is recommended.
- Click More Settings, in the Video Resolution field select the file resolution (640 x 360 p is enough).
- Click the Convert button. Video processing begins according to the specified parameters.
- A Download button appears when you click on it and the video is downloaded to your computer.
Additionally, there are many services and torrents that offer ready-made albums that contain good clips for the car radio in suitable quality.
The standard radios of European cars, especially German ones, categorically do not recognize the existence of the MP3 format, considering it pirated. So we have to change them to Japanese devices.
Car radios with mp4 format are especially popular today
The video format for a car radio matters; if the radio, for example, does not read MP-4, then you have big problems, the largest number of videos are released in this format. Modern car radios support a wide range of video and audio formats, but when we insert a flash drive, the files cannot be read, since it is necessary to take into account what format of the flash drive the car radio reads.
Existing formats for radio tape recorders
There are many formats (so-called sizes, further in the text), some are more in demand today and are used in a wide range of models, others are less common, either outdated or too new:
- The most famous audio sizes are MP3, WAV, WMA, CDA
- MP3 is today the most popular and most licensed format for storing audio data, which was developed by a group of MPEG campaign specialists
- In this size, a new algorithm for encoding information with losses in the upper and lower frequencies of sound is used
Note: There are no such losses in the CDA format.
- But the technology allows you to significantly (10 or even more times) reduce the size of an MP3 file in comparison with the original CDA format
- Moreover, the average bitrate of a compressed file is more than 128 kbps
- And the higher the speed of information transmission, the better the quality of the resulting music file is reproduced
- However, due to the use of the perceptual encoding method, the deterioration in quality during playback remains practically unnoticeable to the average listener
Note: You can only notice the difference if you have a good radio and excellent branded headphones, which 90 percent of ordinary listeners do not have.
- CDA has been used for a long time on CDs, it is the very first and simplest for storing digital audio data. File playback occurs at a certain fixed disk rotation speed and has the highest playback quality, this is explained simply, data in the CDA format is not compressed, don't give in to him
- WAV is the closest size to CDA in terms of its internal content
- The format is “outdated”, so it is rarely supported by modern car radios
- It has a rather low quality of reproduced sound and a large file size
- WMA is a format developed by Microsoft Corporation and is used for playing and storing audio data.
- In fact, it is an alternative size to MP3
- A distinctive feature from other audio sizes is the highest encoding rates (compression and surround sound and voice), this allows you to get files of a fairly small size
- The format uses the Lossless method, which allows you to maintain the quality of all encoded data
- The disadvantage is the low threshold of its sensitivity to errors
- If data is damaged, then it will be impossible to reproduce it not only in the area of damage, but also 5-10 seconds before the damage and the same amount after that
- AAC - some car radios today support this format, the m4a file extension (meaning a file without any protection)
- The main feature is the lower quality loss that occurs during compression compared to similar MP3 sizes
- It is used much less frequently than other similar formats (like MP3, WMA)
- There are a number of formats that are practically not supported by car radios.
- These are outdated formats for lossless information compression - WV, ALAC, MLP, Monkey`s Audio APE, TTA
- They occupy large amounts of data and are used in acoustic systems of recording studios, in high-quality sound reproduction equipment and specific sound devices.
- The only exception to the rule is the FLAC size.
- At the moment, this is one of the audio codecs still supported in car radios that uses the Lossless recording method.
- A distinctive characteristic from similar formats is that information from the audio stream is not deleted and remains in its original form after it is compressed.

Today, disc car radios usually support all the classic sizes for video playback:
- Video format for car radios - VCD, DVD, and SVCD
- Used to store video with sound
- All of these formats have some limitations when choosing the size and proportions of the image that is encoded in them
- The most popular video format, which is used in DVD car radios (see DVD car radios with a screen and their review), is MPEG4 (with Xv codecs >
Disc format
You need to find out what disc formats your radio supports. Almost always these are CDs and DVDs. You can copy up to 800 MB of information to a CD, and up to 8.5 GB to a DVD. There are also minidiscs. CD versions hold 210 MB, DVD - 1.4 GB.
CD-ROM (often called a “blank”) 700 MB. Simple, cheap option
Depending on the possibility of rewriting, disks are divided into R and RW. The RW variant can be rewritten many times, while the R is write-once only . Yes, RW is more convenient, but not all radios support it.
This is interesting: How to prepare a truck for winter?
An important point is the disk file system. It can be “old” and “new”. "Old", also known as CDFS or ISO 9660, is played by almost all players. Discs in the new UDF format can only be played on fairly modern radios. The problem is that by default, many disc burning programs use the UDF format. Be sure to read the instructions for the head unit to find out what file system it can work with.
DVD holds much more music than CD and costs only slightly more
Attention! If you write a disc using the built-in tools of Windows 7, 8 or 10, a combined UDF/ISO 9660 (mode 2) file system will be created on it. Usually there are no problems with its playback, but some older players are not able to “see” files on such media.
Trouble with formats
Almost all modern radios are equipped with USB outputs for connecting portable devices:
- The main devices, of course, are USB Flash or, popularly, “flash drives,” on which today it is very convenient to store music and then play it in the car
- In addition, today you can connect an MP3 player, phone or portable hard drive via USB, and 50% of car radios will also read these devices
- Why only 50%, because, as a rule, the radio is designed exclusively for FLASH, a hard drive, or a phone may simply not be detected
- It’s convenient, you download music through the “computer” and in just a couple of minutes you listen to it in your car
- Got tired of it, erased the old recordings with my own hands and immediately recorded new tracks, no need for any discs, which then gather dust in bundles
- However, sometimes problems arise, the “flash drive” in the radio is not readable, although everything was fine on the computer
- This happens, but it does not always mean that your “carrier” is broken
- The most common option is too much flash memory
- Typically, the manufacturer itself provides instructions for the radio, which indicate the maximum volume of media that your radio can recognize and play.
- Typically, the maximum volume is 4 Gigabytes, for outdated options it can be 3 Gigabytes
- And if you insert 8-16 gigabytes, then the radio simply does not perceive it
- Accordingly, this flash drive will not be read
- The second option is the wrong file system of the flash drive.
- The format of a flash drive for a car radio is FAT32. Modern high-speed flash drives have other file systems, for example, NTFS, so it will not be readable
- Here you need to look at the file system on your computer
- To do this, simply insert the flash drive and right-click - then select properties and look for an item called “file system”, it should be FAT32
- If you have a different one, no problem, just below we’ll look at how to reformat a flash drive
- If the flash drive has the correct system and file format, and yesterday the music played without problems, but today it doesn’t, this also happens
- Moreover, when you insert a “flash drive” into your computer, it sees everything and plays the files, but the car’s radio refuses to play music
- It's simple, errors could have accumulated in the flash drive itself
- You just need to format it, I’ll tell you in detail how to do this below.
Attention: After formatting, all data will be lost, so if possible, copy it to your computer
- When your “Flash Drive” is not readable both in your car and in your computer, but is recognized by the computer as a removable disk
- There is only one solution - format
- However, the files will no longer be saved, you will no longer be able to rewrite them - because the flash drive is unreadable
- Music is not a big loss, you can re-upload it from your computer or download it from the Internet
- When the device is not readable either in the car or on the computer
- The computer usually writes - device detected is not recognized, the problem repeats on different computers (it’s better to check on at least three)
- It looks like the flash drive is dead, all you can do is buy a new one, it cannot be repaired
- If suddenly on any computer it is suddenly recognized as a removable disk, read on
- The cause of the breakdown is either a defect, or this is the price of the issue for careless handling, before removing the flash drive from the radio, it is better to turn off the radio itself, the same thing when turning it on
- On the computer, first select the option to safely disconnect the device, then you can remove the flash drive, otherwise there is a possibility of damage to it
- I don’t even want to argue, you don’t need to prove to me that you took it out and put it in a thousand times, without following the described measures, and everything was fine - the thousand first time it may not work

Formatting
Again, after formatting, your data will be destroyed, so if possible, save it on your computer:
- Insert your flash drive into a USB port on your computer
- It is recognized as a removable disk
- Remember the letter in the disk name, I have “G” (can be F or J)
- Copy data if possible
- Then right-click on the “removable disk” and select “format” from the menu
- A warning will appear indicating that your data will be destroyed.
- Click "OK"
- Then you will need to select the parameters for formatting, set the file system to FAT32 (preferably), you can put your own volume label (this is the name of the flash drive), that is, rename it (I wrote “Flash drive” and now I’m not confused and I advise you)
- If there are problems with the flash drive, it is better not to choose quick formatting - it’s just erasing
- Longer is better - it also helps repair damage and avoid problems in the future
- Click “start”
- After formatting is complete, the message “formatting complete” will appear.
- Now your flash drive is ready for use
- You can “upload” files back
- After such actions, 90% of devices will work without problems in the car. Mine personally, it worked and is “alive” to this day
- If it is not readable again, and others are not readable (you can borrow it from friends to check), then you need to go to a service center, the problem may be in the radio itself
Everything is clear here even without photos, in my opinion, good luck with the carriers and enjoy the music.
There is a native radio R340. Everything is reproduced from sound, but how can I play video on it? It’s clear through Mirrolink, but what about from a USB or SD flash drive? Has anyone tried it?

Through mirrolink, the phone is needed for a Sony Z series, and only when you are standing still. Locks the screen when moving.

How to fill it?
First you need to get it, but it is installed via a flash drive
What's the point if there's no video?
It makes sense to wait for the new standard software for those who have problems with the rear view camera not turning on. And about the video, if only the Kulibins can come up with something.
Latest available update 5516
Hello. Tell me where to get updates?
Friends, tell me who has a 340 radio, or better yet, check if there is an option in the screen settings to turn off the screen after 10 seconds! You check the box and it works, but it works until you remove the key from the ignition, you have to set it again, and so on every time! Is everyone like this? Check it out! And the second question is where to look for updates for it? At OD?
How to get rid of video blocking on your radio
Of course, these blockages need to be removed. In this case, for a signal from the handbrake, it is necessary to apply “minus” to the corresponding wire of the radio. And for the speed sensor, if it is on the radio, then just cut it. In this case, all restrictions will be lifted, and the radio will be able to show video while driving. Well, in order not to tell everything only in words, here we will give a specific example. As an example, the pinout and necessary actions will be shown in order to provide video while driving on the standard Toyota Prado 2014-2017 radio.
This “unlocking” is done in three stages. First, cut the wire on the radio from the handbrake. In our case, this is pin 15 on PIN 90980-12555. We isolate one end that goes to the radio, and connect the other end, which is from the radio, to the ground, to the case. There are two stages. Now all that remains is to deal with the speed sensor, or rather the signal from it. Here we simply cut the wire and insulate it at both ends. For clarity, everything is also shown in the picture.
Now our radio shows video even while driving. Well, I would like to say two things again.
First, this algorithm is suitable not only for a specific case, but is also applicable in general to all radios that refuse to display video in motion. Second, but perhaps more important, the driver should not be distracted while driving the video on the radio. After all, the most important thing for him is visualization of what is happening around him, and if you lose such connection with the situation, then this is fraught with trouble.
