Installation of HBO 4th generation

HBO button 2nd generation

Sometimes owners of cars with gas equipment need to change or independently connect the 2nd generation LPG button. Today we will talk about the difference between the gas-gasoline switch for injection and carburetor engines, and we will also provide a diagram for connecting the LPG button.

There are two most common types of fuel switches, which visually differ in practically nothing except the index. One is intended for a carburetor, the second for an injection power unit.

HBO button for injection engine

The button for switching the 2nd generation LPG to the injector has the index “W” and slightly modified wiring.

The LPG fuel type switch has 3 positions:

  • Gasoline only (in this operating mode, the engine runs exclusively on gasoline, the indicator light does not light up or glows red);
  • Gas only (this emergency mode is designed to start the engine on gas without pre-warming on gasoline, the indicator lights will flash in this operating mode)
  • Automatic (when this operating mode is selected, the car starts in normal mode on gasoline, and when a given number of revolutions is reached, it switches to gas. The display shows the level of gas in the cylinder).

Setting up the 2nd generation HBO button for the injector

The functionality of the switch for an injection internal combustion engine includes:

  • indication,
  • Built-in emulator with time delay,
  • The ability to regulate the number of revolutions at which the engine automatically switches from gasoline to gas.

For automatic operation of the car, you must correctly configure the LPG button, in particular, set the required number of revolutions at which the engine operating mode will change.

The adjustment occurs by rotating the potentiometer clockwise or counterclockwise, which is located directly on the device itself. The optimal speed is considered to be from 1500 to 2500.

Depending on the time of year and weather conditions, the number of revolutions can be changed:

  • set lower speeds for the summer period
  • higher for winter, so that switching to gas does not occur when the engine is not warmed up.

The button is supplied with:

  • A set of wires for connecting to HBO.
  • Plastic mounting bracket for attaching the device to a car dashboard or other convenient place.
  • Mounting terminals for connecting power supply devices (reducer valve, emulator, etc.).
  • Fuse and power cord.

Setting up HBO yourself

Let us immediately note that if installing an LPG taking into account the instructions is a complex but feasible task, setting up an LPG assumes that there is a clear understanding of why this or that action is being performed. In other words, for example, setting up a 4th generation Digitronic HBO with your own hands or setting up any other system can rightfully be considered a complex and responsible task.

It is important to understand that errors in settings can lead to unstable operation of the internal combustion engine, various failures, and even failure of the power plant and individual vehicle systems. Please note that if you are not confident in your abilities, it is better to immediately entrust this procedure to an experienced master. If you want to configure the HBO yourself, you will need to buy a special wire (cable) and also install the appropriate software on your laptop.

By the way, all systems are similar to each other, that is, for example, setting up a 4th generation Lovato LPG with your own hands will not differ much from similar settings in other systems. The only difference is in the graphical interface of the programs themselves and some options that are needed for advanced configuration.

  • So, before starting the setup, you need to warm up the car until the engine reaches operating temperatures. Next, you need to remove all load from the internal combustion engine, except for idling (turn off the heater, headlights, dimensions, additional equipment, etc.). Now you can connect with a cable and run the unit setup program. Let's look at the HBO tincture, using the STAG4 program as an example.

First, in the program window, you need to set the number of engine cylinders per coil; the RPM speed must also match the engine speed (550-940). All data must exactly match the vehicle.

After this, you need to go to the tab where the switch-on temperature is set. For summer not lower than +35, and for winter not less than +40. Cylinder shutdown is set to 250. This will allow for a smooth transition from gasoline to gas and back, without engine vibration.

As for pressure error time, this parameter is set at 300 to 420. When choosing the type of gas injectors, it is important that the selected type is exactly the same as those on the machine. If the owner does not know which injectors are installed, the injectors need to be inspected. Manufacturers usually mark them so that the program can then determine which injectors are installed.

The operating pressure of the gearbox should be from 1.0 to 1.3 bar, the minimum is not less than 0.50. Fuel type LPG for propane or CNG for methane (marked). Now you can go to the automatic configuration tab and click start (start). All you have to do is wait from 1 minute to 5 minutes. The setup time depends on how well the car runs on gasoline. If the engine is not running stably, there are problems with the ignition system, etc., then it will take more time for auto-tuning.

The fact is that some injectors can be adjusted to the engine, since they have a performance margin, while others are designed for a specific power and the margin is minimal. In any case, the pressure of the reducer is important for all types of injectors. During auto-tuning, the program itself will calibrate the pressure of the reducer, and the line may become higher than a coefficient from 1 to 1.4 or lower than this indicator.

In the first case, overestimation indicates that the pressure is from 1 to 1.3 bar, but the injector nozzles are too narrow. This suggests that it is possible to increase the performance of the injectors by drilling out the nozzles and making them wider, which will increase the throughput.

If the line is below the coefficient, this indicates large nozzles. In this case, the throughput of the nozzles is reduced by changing the nozzles to suitable analogues with a smaller diameter. Note that the line at a pressure of 1-1.3 should normally be in the range of the coefficient 1-1.4. With such indicators, throttle response is maintained, gas consumption does not exceed 20% compared to gasoline, and the engine operates under normal conditions, there is no big risk of reducing its service life.

LPG carburetor button

The fuel type switch for a carburized car has the index “G” and three positions:

  • I – operating mode on gasoline only. In this operating mode, the gasoline pump is activated, and all gas equipment is turned off;
  • 0 – operating mode in which both power supply systems are disabled. Allows you to exhaust the contents of the carburetor float chamber before switching to gas. This operating mode is necessary to prevent the internal combustion engine from flooding with two types of fuel at the same time.
  • II – gas only operating mode. The car starts and runs exclusively on gas; the fuel supply to the gasoline pump is not used. During the spring-summer period of the year, you can operate a car without gasoline at all.

The front panel of the device has LED indicators that indicate what fuel the car is currently running on.

On the side panel of the device there is a potentiometer that regulates the gas supply time. If the engine for some reason does not work or does not start during this period of time, the gas supply is stopped automatically.

Most gas-gasoline switch buttons are additionally equipped with an indication of the amount of gas remaining in the cylinder.

What's the result?

As you can see, if necessary, you can install HBO yourself. However, this is not recommended, since only specialized services issue a package of documents for gas equipment, which is necessary for further registration of gas equipment with the traffic police.

If the engine and its systems are normal, after auto-tuning, in most cases the power unit will operate normally. In cases where problems are noticeable, but no reason is visible, it is better to immediately contact a specialist in setting up the gas equipment, having informed in advance that an attempt was previously made to install and configure the gas equipment with your own hands.

HBO button connection diagram

Let's look at the connection diagram for the 2nd generation HBO button for an injection-driven internal combustion engine using the example of a product from the manufacturer stag2 and Digitronic.

It should be noted right away that the basic functionality and connection method itself are the same for almost all manufacturers. The recommended connection diagram must necessarily be included with the HBO switch. The connection diagram for the 2nd generation HBO button to the carburetor will have a similar appearance.

The wire set for stag2 and Digitronic products has the following colors:

  • White . It is connected to the gas level sensor in the cylinder and is responsible for the correct indication on the fuel level button in the cylinder.
  • Cyan (blue) . It is connected to an electromagnetic gas valve , which is located on the reducer. When the device is switched to the “Gas” operating mode, the gas valve opens and gas is supplied to the reducer. An additional gas valve with a filter and an injector emulator can be connected in parallel to the same wire.
  • Yellow . Connects to the solenoid valve in front of the gasoline pump . When the button is in the “gasoline” position, power is supplied to the gasoline solenoid valve and the car runs on its native fuel. When the car switches to the “gas” operating mode, no power is supplied and the fuel pump does not work. Many installers of gas equipment do not recommend turning off the gas pump, but insist that it works even when the vehicle is running on gas.
  • Red . Power supply for the HBO button . You can connect directly to the positive terminal of the battery through the fuse and boot for it included in the kit. In this case, the HBO switch will be under constant voltage. If you want to power the gas-gasoline switch only when the ignition is turned on, you should take 12 volts from another place (for example, power supply to gasoline injectors).
  • Black . Ground , needs to be connected to the car body.
  • Brown . Connects to the control contact on the ignition coil. From here, information about the number of engine revolutions is taken and, accordingly, gas-gasoline operation is automatically switched. In the case of a carburetor engine, a signal is taken from here whether the engine is running or not; if the engine is turned off, no fuel is supplied.

I suffered for almost a year... I switched to gasoline and that was it... Then again to gas. And this winter I’m completely tired of it... Until I drive for 30 minutes or more on gasoline - I switched to gas but returned to gasoline. Everything is OK with the engine. The thermostat works, the engine warms up almost instantly. In the end, I gave up and went to a very good, albeit young, master. He listened to me, connected the laptop and... He began to feel the harness... And at a distance of 30 cm from it he felt the twist, connection Dt. Because of the slight oxidation of this compound, the temperature readings jumped from 20 to 70. And Gazomozg jumped from B to G and back. Stsuka... Even during a long downhill drive, the car jumped to B. Although I specifically set the switching temperature myself to the minimum possible +25° How much blood did this garbage drink...

Actually, this is a normal situation, in my map it is set to switch to gasoline during sharp acceleration, so as not to burn out the valves and maintain dynamics.

A photo of the engine compartment would be desirable. Inspect the wires going to the “glass” with the filter and sensors. Inspect the positive power supply wire of the gas system, especially the fuse. Inspect the negative power cable of the gas system, especially the contact point. Securely secure the gas system wires so that they do not dangle or sag.

Cleaning the gearbox - this definitely happened to me.

Good afternoon everyone. There is a problem. History: Lanos, HBO 4 generations, Tomasetto Alaska, STAG 4, Valtek injectors. All this worked fine, but problems began. 1. It automatically switches to gasoline. Without signals, without anything, you’re driving along the highway like this, you look at the gas button, and the gas-gasoline light is blinking - premise, devouring precious gasoline. Quiet, no noise and dust. The filters were replaced, but to no avail. 2. Sometimes the gas-gasoline button starts blinking, clearly indicating some errors. Example in the video below:

HBO button: installation features

Gas equipment is a frequent visitor to the roads of modern Russia. Prices for gasoline and diesel are rising, and the economy is far from ideal, as a result of which motorists are actively switching to cheap gas. Of course, the costs of installing and registering gas equipment are considerable, but with active use of the machine they will pay for themselves in an extremely short time. In a number of articles, our resource has already examined in detail the main components of gas equipment, the procedure for its installation and legalization, but the issue of installing a gas equipment button has not been covered. Correcting this misunderstanding, we present you with today’s material. It is there that everyone can find answers to questions about what the HBO button is, how to install it and why it is needed in principle. Interesting? Be sure to scroll down the page.

Features of HBO connection

Gas equipment of any type is equipment that allows you to adapt a gasoline engine to power and operate on gas. Typically, the most popular and used units run on propane or methane. Regardless of the type, HBO is not a replacement for a standard injector or carburetor, but only a convenient and high-quality alternative. That is, by installing gas, any motorist has the opportunity to use his vehicle both by refilling with gas fuel and regular gasoline.

Switching between the engine’s fuel supply cannot occur automatically, because this aspect of the machine’s operation is set personally by the motorist. To switch the engine operating mode to gas from gasoline or vice versa, special equipment called the LPG button is used.

In fact, this element of equipment design is a device that works together with both the gas equipment control unit and the electronic “brains” of the engine injector or carburetor. The principle of its operation is based on the fact that, using fine electronic tuning, pressing a button blocks the operation of one fuel distribution unit and connects another to the operation. Thus, the supply of gasoline is switched to the supply of gas, or the reverse operation is carried out.

It turns out that the button for switching engine operating modes is one of the most important components in controlling all gas equipment. Moreover, it does not matter whether the car has a 2nd generation HBO or a 4th generation HBO. In any case, a switch is needed and it plays the most important role, adapting the engine operating mode to the desires of the motorist.

Causes

Let's highlight a few of the most common reasons.

Air lock in the cooling system.

The most common and common reason is that after changing the coolant, air remains in the system and gets into the gearbox. Consequently, the coolant does not circulate and does not warm up the temperature sensor, which is located in the gearbox. The ECU does not receive a signal that the desired temperature has been reached and the car does not switch to gas, continuing to run on gasoline. This can be determined simply by touching the outlet pipe with your hand. Its temperature should be the same as that entering the gearbox.

Read more: The cheapest car on credit

Solution: Remove the outlet pipe of the cooling system on the gearbox, wait until the air comes out and coolant starts flowing out of the gearbox, put the pipe back in place.

Coolant

If the coolant level is insufficient, the gearbox will not warm up to the required temperature and will not signal the ECU that it is ready to switch to gas. The second point may be at severe subzero temperatures, when the coolant freezes in the gearbox; in this case, the entire cooling system and cabin heater most likely will not work, which can lead to engine overheating.

Solution: check the coolant level and top up if necessary. If the antifreeze freezes, let the engine run for 2-5 minutes, then take a break in operation for the same amount of time until the coolant freezes.

temperature sensor

The second most common reason is a malfunction of the temperature sensor located on the gearbox or a break in the wires leading to it. The sensor does not provide information about the temperature of the gearbox to the electronic control unit and the machine does not switch to gas. It is not difficult to check the functionality of the sensor; you need to take a tester and “ring” the sensor for the presence of resistance. If resistance is present, the sensor can be considered conditionally serviceable. When the engine warms up, the resistance value on the working sensor should change.

Solution: replacing the temperature sensor

Solenoid valve

Failure of the solenoid valve is quite a rare occurrence; a broken wire or oxidation of the valve contacts is much more common. In this case, the ECU sends a signal to the valve to start operating on gas, but either (due to oxidation of the wires) the signal is not received, or (due to a malfunction of the valve) switching to gas does not occur.

Solution: first of all, check the condition of the contacts and remove oxidation, check the integrity of the wires. If the problem persists, replace the valve with a previously working one.

Fuse

The fuse on the main plus of the LPG system has failed or is badly oxidized. In this case, the gas/petrol switch button will also not work.

Solution: Replace the fuse

Types of buttons

The LPG button is exactly the element that is equipped with any gas equipment when it is sold. Despite this, loss and damage to the fuel switch happens quite often, as a result of which the question regarding the choice of new buttons is always relevant among gas motorists. There are no particular difficulties in selecting a new HBO component, except for the fact that you need to purchase the type of button specifically for a specific car.

Based on the last point, it is worth noting that there is a classification of HBO buttons, which is carried out according to:

  • The type of available equipment (it is not surprising that completely different types of switches are used for HBO 2 and HBO 4);
  • Type of main fuel system. It is worth understanding that the LPG buttons for carburetors and injectors are made differently, because the electronic control of these mechanisms differs significantly. It’s also stupid to be surprised by anything here, since the injector nozzles and carburetor valves are completely different mechanisms.

In addition to the main types of classification, HBO buttons are also divided according to their functional equipment. That is, some devices are aimed only at turning off the gasoline supply to the engine and connecting the gas supply, while others also have an external display, which displays information regarding the operation of the equipment received from electronic sensors. Naturally, the buttons of the second generation are noticeably more difficult to install, because the process involves connecting not only fuel distribution control units, but also third-party electronics.

Switch installation

Considering that the LPG buttons are also different for different generations and engine configurations, it is impossible to give a specific order for their installation. Fortunately for many motorists, the procedure for installing the switches is necessarily included in the instructions attached to them, so when carrying out this operation it is enough to study in detail the technical documentation supplied with the device. In general, the device installation process is as follows:

  1. First of all, specific wires are connected to the carburetor or injector control units and the gas equipment itself;
  2. Then, if the HBO button assumes the implementation of outputting sensor indicators, the wires intended for this purpose are connected directly with identifiers. Also, if there is an automatic selection of the fuel used, the switch is connected to the main engine sensors, namely the units that monitor the crankshaft speed and the temperature inside the engine;
  3. After carrying out the above operations, all that remains is to mount the button in a convenient place, usually inside the cabin, and begin to actively use it.

We repeat, it is impossible to give more specific information due to the presence of a large number of types of HBO buttons. In any case, it is quite difficult to make a mistake in their installation, since the detailed installation procedure is included in the special instructions. An example of this is the following connection diagram.

It is worth noting that there are several options for installing the HBO button. The differences between them lie either in the placement of the device (located in the cabin, outside the cabin), or in the method of turning off the supply of one or another type of fuel. In addition to contacting the control units of the fuel distribution mechanisms, connecting the LPG button is possible by breaking the fuel lines in specific places (for example, in the fuel pump). In this regard, any motorist can experiment and choose something at his own discretion.

As you can see in the answer to the question of how to connect the HBO button, there are no difficulties. During the installation of this unit, it is enough to take into account all the features that your gas equipment and car fuel system have, and also strictly adhere to the order of installing the switch from the instructions supplied with it. We assure you that by installing the button in this way, the procedure will be completed successfully for you and will not cause much trouble.

That's probably all for today's issue. We hope that the material presented above was useful to you and provided answers to your questions. Good luck on the roads!

Operating principle and differences between buttons

The 1-2 generation button on the carburetor has two working positions and one neutral.

  • I – the engine starts and runs only on gasoline (gas valve is closed, the red light is on).
  • II – The internal combustion engine switches to gas, while the gasoline electric valve closes and the green lamp lights up.
  • 0 (Neutral) – serves to burn gasoline from the carburetor float chamber.

Changing the fuel type should only occur through the neutral position. If you turn on the gas right away, two types of fuel will enter the combustion chambers and the engine will most likely stall.

Some copies have an indication of the fuel level in the cylinder, as well as an additional button for the pre-start supply of a portion of gas, which is needed to enrich the mixture when starting a warm engine on gas (for example, Lovato, Logo buttons for a vacuum reducer).

A key such as, for example, Stag 2-G already has a pre-start function built into it, with the ability to adjust by time.

In the injection version, instead of the middle position, there is an automatic mode (on some types, such as Stag 2-W, it can be extreme). In this position, the engine starts on gasoline, and when a certain engine speed is reached, the gas supply is automatically turned on.

Go to these heads who installed the HBO.

I just called to say that it is now after the holidays.

Tomorrow I’ll go to the gas workers myself - the installation has started to work poorly. Damn, the car barely drives and the revs jump when you put pressure on the slippers. On gasoline everything is good!

It's good that they work. Everything is quiet here until 9. Holidays, who invented them?

And do not say. Always knocked out and ruts

The car won't let you get bored.

A pressure sensor that is located after the reducer (vapor phase pressure sensor). Change it. 90% that he is not working.

Go to the adjusters. We need to set it up. And especially if it’s under warranty, let them bring it to fruition.

When the gas is “used,” the gas brain switches the car to gasoline based on a signal from the vapor phase pressure sensor. If this sensor is not working properly - it produces a constant voltage, or there is some kind of “trick”, then the gas brain will not be able to understand that the gas has run out and, accordingly, the car will not switch to gasoline on its own.

PS. The fake is made for temporary use if the pressure sensor has died - for example, a voltage divider with 2 resistors.

I drove only 2 you on HBO. km

that means the WARRANTY rules... and let them replace it - it’s not cheap and it can break

But I forgot something about the warranty.

I drove only 2 you on HBO. km

If the jamb is initially either a defective HBO or incorrect settings

There was only auto-tuning with the laptop and we didn’t go anywhere.

Is the vapor phase sensor a MAP sensor?

The MAP is a manifold pressure sensor, and the gas pressure sensor is another sensor, often two of these elements in the same housing.

Two tubes fit to it, one thick, the other small, and the connector is connected to the bottom.

Absolutely right. The connector should be downwards and the sensor should not be lower than the intake manifold, the filter should be before the sensor.

Should the map sensor connector be connected from below? Or there is no difference! ?

and goes on or do you not let it stall?

I won't give it, of course. This happened in motion.

give it neutral and see what happens. and so, the system sees that there is pressure in the gas system and does not switch... It remains to find out which part is responsible for informing about the gas pressure and its cost. :) provided that the brain is in good working order - there is no failure in the program

After 2 thousand km, something already breaks. Ok, I'll try.

let them change it and everything is a guarantee

I tried it today. I started it, warmed up the engine, switched to gas, it works, I gave it 3 thousand revolutions and it doesn’t stall. Of course, I don’t understand what the hell the gas ran out of. I went, drove no more than 1.5 km and then the car began to stall, but it switched to gasoline. There was a very strong drop from 2.5 thousand to 1 thousand. Fortunately, the road was empty after all. But before that, I cut the hose from the map sensor to the ramp. I shortened it by up to 10 cm. I read somewhere that the length should be no more than 10 cm. And I deployed the map sensor and made it higher than the intake manifold.

Sometimes owners of cars equipped with gas equipment are faced with a problem when the engine does not switch to gas when the 4th generation of gas equipment is installed, and continues to run on gasoline. In today's article, we will try to understand the reasons why the LPG does not switch to gas, or immediately stalls after switching.

Connection diagram of the 2nd generation HBO button to the injector

Installing and connecting the 2nd generation HBO button with your own hands on a car with an injector sometimes causes difficulty.

In fact, everything is much simpler than it seems. The factory instructions for installing the switch indicate the following pinout:

  • the white wire should go to the level sensor on the multivalve (if such an indicator is installed);
  • yellow goes to the positive of the gasoline valve (if there is emulation of gasoline injectors, this wire is not connected);
  • blue connects to the positive terminals of the gas valves of the reducer and the additional remote valve with filter. The injector emulator also cuts into this circuit;
  • red goes to the positive terminal of the ignition coil (necessarily with a fuse);
  • black - mass;
  • brown to the negative terminal of the coil.

It’s hard to disagree with the first three points. But for the rest we will make recommendations:

  • The red wire is best connected to the positive side of the ignition switch. Because the coils may have voltage surges. In order not to disassemble the panel, the contact can be found on the fuse block.
  • The black wire should only be attached to the car body, like all negative equipment cables.
  • Brown, must be wound onto the central high voltage wire of the coil.

It is advisable to do 10-15 turns, without using electrical tape. The electrical tape dries out over time and falls off; it is better to make a knot similar to tying a fish hook.

If the ignition system consists of separate coils, it is necessary to wind the wire onto the first two armor wires (for a more accurate signal), without breaking the brown one, i.e. first to the first then to the second.

After connecting the button, it must be adjusted. Periodically increasing the engine speed with the accelerator, it is necessary to smoothly turn the potentiometer screw clockwise and back. It is necessary to ensure that the gas supply is turned on in the “automatic” mode when the tachometer reading is 2000-2500 rpm.

Connection diagram of the 2nd generation HBO button to the carburetor

For a carburetor engine, the connection looks similar:

  1. Red - through the fuse to the ignition coil/switch.
  2. Light blue (blue) – gas valve positive.
  3. Yellow – positive of the gasoline valve.
  4. Black – minus (car body).
  5. The brown one goes to the ignition coil armored wire. It is needed to transmit an impulse to the key, which determines whether the motor is running or not.

What to do if HBO does not switch to gas

In most cases, it is possible to detect and repair a breakdown with your own hands.

Airlock

So, the first thing you need to do is bring the level of antifreeze/antifreeze in the expansion tank to normal. Then, by pressing on the radiator pipes and simultaneously releasing gas, try to “drive” the air plug out of the evaporator reducer. If this method does not help, and you are also sure that there is air, then you need to remove the output hose from the gearbox and drain a small part of the liquid (by starting the internal combustion engine for a couple of seconds), after first replacing it with a clean container.

You can detect the presence of a plug in the following way: heat the car engine to operating temperature, compare the heating intensity of the pipes and the evaporator itself.

Next, check the correct installation of the gas equipment (we wrote about this here), also inspect the mechanical damage to the installation, and the presence of kinks in tubes/hoses.

Temperature sensor

If the work done does not give a positive result, you need to make sure that the wires going to the gearbox temperature sensor are intact, and also make sure that its connectors are free of traces of oxidation. Wiring twists are not allowed here, only soldering or secure terminals.

If there is no visible damage to the evaporator temperature indicator, its diagnosis is required. You can find a defect, knowing the parameters (resistance) of a particular sensor, using a multimeter. And if you have a cable for adjusting/diagnostics of gas equipment, as well as software, it will be possible to identify the fault much faster.

The reason that the HBO does not switch to gas (4th generation) is usually a breakdown of the sensor or adjustment of its operating parameters. If adjusting the values does not produce results, it will need to be replaced or repaired.

As an option, to start the gas installation, you can try to short-circuit the sensor wires and then get to the place where it is purchased/repaired.

Problems with the 2nd generation of HBO

In a situation where the 2nd generation of LPG on an injector or carburetor does not switch to gas, there are usually three reasons:

  1. airing of the gearbox or low fluid level;
  2. malfunction of the fuel type switch button;
  3. failure of the gas solenoid valve coil.

You can find all other causes and methods for eliminating them by following the links in the article. If you still have questions, ask them in the form below, we will definitely give a detailed answer.
