Nobody likes to drive a car with a dirty windshield. It happens that on the Passat B5 2001 the windshield washers refuse to work, which makes it impossible to clear the glass of dirt. In this case, you should immediately look for the cause of the phenomenon and fix the breakdown. After all, a windshield that is not cleaned of dirt can lead to limited visibility and emergency situations.
Installation of windshield washers on the Passat B5
It is necessary to understand how the system for cleaning glass from dirt works. To do this, open the hood and find the washer reservoir. Next to it are the remaining components of the windshield wiper system.
Replacing the washer nozzle
The first place to start with this system is the injectors. They are the ones who supply the windshield cleaning fluid to the windshield. Then you will see a reservoir with a capacity of up to 5 liters, which contains washer fluid.
The next element is a pump installed on a tank with liquid. It is designed to create the necessary pressure to spray liquid. The most primitive centrifugal pump. You will also see the pipes through which this liquid flows to the elements of the system.
Simple causes of malfunction
In the summer, the main problem is clogged nozzles , which can be solved using a regular needle or the sharp end of a pin, which needs to be used to clean every hole in the mechanism. If necessary, you will need to repeat the procedure several times.
When replacing washer nozzles, we recommend fan nozzles.
Another problem is associated with complete wear of the injectors . The solution is simple - replace with new ones. To do this, just use something sharp to carefully pry up the plastic case, slightly pull the device out of the niche, and remove the tube from its seat. Install a new element and repeat all steps in reverse order.

It happens that the underwater hose becomes bent, which prevents liquid from flowing to the nozzles. It is necessary to carefully inspect the entire system, if it is necessary to replace the tubes, or secure them with plastic clamps at the bend points.
During the winter season, the liquid in the system may freeze, which is why it is not supplied to the glass . At the same time, you can hear the buzzing of the electric motor, but nothing else happens. After the machine is well warmed up, it is periodically necessary to press the liquid supply lever briefly, if there is no effect after a few minutes, repeat the procedure. Usually after this the cause of the malfunction is eliminated.
Summer detergent should not be allowed to remain for the winter. The solution is timely replacement.
Why the windshield washers don't work on the Passat
The windshield washers of the Passat B5 2001 do not work for various reasons. It is necessary to pay attention to what time of year the problem occurred. These reasons are different for winter and summer.
- The first reason is the lack of windshield cleaning fluid in the reservoir. But the Passat is equipped with a special signaling device, which is located on the dashboard. When this indicator lights up, you should add washer fluid to the reservoir.
- The next reason is a violation of the connection of the pipes. The tubes could become disconnected due to vibration or impacts on rough roads. In this case, the liquid does not reach the nozzles.
- Using low-quality fluid can also lead to windshield washer failure. Over time, the injectors become clogged with small debris and stop functioning normally.
- In winter, windshield wiper fluid could freeze in the system. To eliminate the problem, you must leave the car in a warm place. The system will thaw and work as before.
- Electrical wiring, or rather a fuse. It's easy to check. Turn on the wipers: if they work, it's not the fuse. There is one fuse for the pump and brush motor.
- If all else fails, then you should check the centrifugal pump that pumps the liquid. To do this, you need to listen to the sound of its work. If you don’t hear anything, it’s possible that the motor has burned out and become unusable. You should also check the electric motor connection terminal, which is located in an area of high humidity, which can cause it to oxidize.

The windshield washer does not work on the Passat B6 for the same reasons as on the B5. The design of B5, B6 and B3 is slightly different, the principle remains the same. But when the Passat CC windshield washer does not work, the causes of the malfunction and the methods for eliminating them will be different.
Device Features
There are new and old motors. The latter can be found on Soviet cars, or on VAZ 2107, 2108, for example.
Most cars, including the VAZ 2109, 2110, 2114, as well as foreign cars Mitsubishi Lancer, Pajero Sport or Ford Focus, already use new types of washer motors (pumps).
The main components of the washer are:
- nozzles;
- pump (motor);
- reservoir with washer fluid.
Nozzles are used to supply water to the windshield of a car. Therefore, they should be positioned so that the outgoing stream of liquid hits the center of the headplate as much as possible. The pump supplies water to the tank. By the way, on some cars, wash water is supplied not only to the windshield, but also to the main headlights in front and behind.
It doesn't matter what kind of car you have. It could be a Priora, a Hyundai Accent, some Mazda or Toyota. All the washer motors work on the same principle. Although the device, characteristics and appearance may vary.
Pumps supply water or washer fluid. If the windshield washer does not work, most likely the reservoir or the nozzles themselves are broken. They can be replaced or repaired yourself.
If the pump breaks, the task is a little more difficult. It is important to immediately identify the problem and fix the breakdown. Driving a car, especially in bad weather, when the windshield wiper does not work, is dangerous.
Causes of malfunctions
Don't rush to blame the engine for everything. It may work, but the windshield wiper does not function for other reasons.
Let's look at the key reasons why our wipers stop doing their job.
- Clogged filter or nozzle. Frequent breakdown. Especially for those who use tap water instead of special washer fluid. To solve the problem, you need to dismantle the devices and flush the system. The work is not difficult, but delicate;
- Supply hoses. They wear out over time, lose their tightness, and burst. Everything is simple here. Remove the old hoses and install new ones. Their price is cheap even on foreign cars;
- Incorrect connection. While carrying out some repair work on the wipers themselves or nearby components, you could disassemble the washer system and reassemble it incorrectly. Check connections and correct errors made during assembly;
- Electric motor and pump shaft. It happens that the connection between them is weak or completely broken. What to do? Right. The element needs to be better secured;
- Motor failure. It doesn’t happen that often, but you shouldn’t rule out this option. Before changing a part, try to clean the motor and its brushes, and get rid of all traces of corrosion. Sometimes it helps. If the repair does not produce results, replacement will help.
Here are the main causes of windshield wiper failure. It is not the most complex mechanism in a car, so you can repair it yourself.
If the old motor has failed, there is no point in trying to repair it somehow. To buy a new part, you will have to spend very little money. And the replacement procedure on most cars is extremely simple.
How to remove the washer reservoir on the Passat B5
In order to remove the Volkswagen Passat B5 washer reservoir, you need to remove the bumper and unscrew the fastening of the reservoir itself (2 bolts on top). We remove the wheel and headlight, not forgetting about the fender liner, which also needs to be removed so that you can see 2 more bolts to which the tank is screwed.
Then you should unscrew the intercooler bracket, where another mount for the washer reservoir will open.

Replacing the windshield washer nozzle
It often happens that the windshield washer nozzles on the Passat B5 become clogged with small debris and stop spraying liquid, or they spray, but very poorly. It is impossible to clean them in place where they stand, so they have to be dismantled.

First, we find the location of the Volkswagen windshield washer nozzles. This is not difficult, but it requires initial repair skills from the car owner. If you can't find it, watch the video:
Disconnect the washer fluid supply system from the hood. It has latches and can be easily removed. Unfasten the injectors from the bottom of the hood, they are held on by quick-release latches, so there should be no problems. That's the whole procedure for removing the injectors. Installing new nozzles is done in the reverse order.
The glass washer on the VAZ does not work
The front window washer, like the windshield wiper, is a very important device that directly affects traffic safety. Therefore, it is important to know about its malfunctions and be able to quickly eliminate them.
To understand why a windshield washer may not work, you need to know how it works in general. The connection diagram for this device is simple: a wire runs from the fuse box to the steering column switch. When the switch is pressed (classic version), voltage is supplied through another wire to the washer pump, and the third wire connects this pump to ground. The pump is installed directly on the washer fluid reservoir and supplies this fluid through flexible tubes to the nozzles. Nozzles with one or more holes spray liquid onto the glass. Actually, that's the whole scheme.
Due to the simplicity of this system, its malfunctions are also primitive.
Windshield washer does not turn on
When you press the corresponding steering column switch from under the hood and you cannot hear the pump whirring, the first thing to do is check the fuse. Moreover, often this can be done instantly by simply turning on the windshield wiper. As a rule, the glass washer is connected to it through the same fuse, so if the wipers do not work, it means the fuse has blown. If the wipers on your car are on a separate fuse, then you need to directly verify the integrity of the fuse. It is also worth making sure that the fuse has reliable contact with its socket in the mounting block.
Replace the blown fuse with a new one of the same rating, and if the new one also burns out, then there is a short circuit in the car wiring. Moreover, if the fuse burns out when the washer is turned on, then the short circuit must be looked for in the pump power circuit.
If the fuse is intact, then you need to make sure that voltage is supplied to the washer pump. With the steering column switch in the appropriate position, check for voltage on both wires leading to the pump. One of them must have a “+”.
Replacing the windshield washer pump
It happens that on a Volkswagen Passat B5 it is necessary to replace a faulty washer pump.
To remove this pump:
- Open the hood.
- Locate the pump on the washer reservoir.
- Disconnect the power connector from the pump and the pipes through which it pumps liquid.
- Take out the pump itself.
