Vehicle speed sensor VAZ 2114

What to do if the speedometer on a VAZ-2114 does not work

AvtoVAZ cars are recognized as quite popular in the Russian Federation due to the fact that they are among the most affordable cars on the market. They are simple and do not have any very high characteristics, but for the average population the available characteristics are sufficient to move around the country. However, like any other car, AvtoVAZ cars can break down, because they contain a huge number of parts. Some of the parts almost never fail and can last for a very long time, but there are parts that are very fragile, which is why they often fail. Almost every AvtoVAZ car has problems with the dashboard. It often happens that the speedometer or tachometer fails. The following signs indicate this:

  1. The speedometer is completely inoperative.
  2. The speedometer needle jerks while driving, freezes in place for a short time and does not move.

If you notice one of the above symptoms of speedometer malfunctions, then you need to somehow fix the problem. You will learn how to return the speedometer on a VAZ-2114 to working condition in this article.

Problems with the speedometer (VAZ-2114)

VAZ 2114 1.6i 8 valves

Hi all. This is the problem: I start the engine, warm it up, everything is fine with the tidy. I start moving and the speedometer needle spontaneously begins to rise to 5 km/h, then to 60, then to 80, to 120, sometimes higher and even climbs onto the odometer and freezes, then during acceleration it begins to rise as expected, but from the place where stopped (5.60 km/h, etc.) That is, according to the speedometer 100 km/h, in fact 40 km/h. In this case, the odometer shows the actual mileage in km. I do a dashboard test, the needle only drops to 50-60 km/h. I remove the “-” terminal, put it on and the arrow drops to 0, but this does not help for long, soon it repeats again, and the arrow always hangs at a different mark. I changed the speed sensor, it didn't help. The connector wires are not broken, everything is fine. It happens that if I skid in the snow (with the arrow at 0), it begins to rise, but it does not rise smoothly and constantly, but in segments. That is, it will rise to 40, then to 70, etc., always differently. And it will continue to rise until I stop the car, then the needle will freeze in the last position and when it starts moving, thinking that it is at zero, it will rise in accordance with the increase in speed. In short, he lives his own life. I'm sinning on the speedometer needle mechanism itself. Please tell me what is the secret of this problem of this miracle of technology of the Russian automobile industry?

Causes of speedometer malfunctions on the VAZ-2114

Unlike previous models, the speedometer on the VAZ-2114 is electronic and not mechanical. Its readings depend on the sensor that is installed on the vehicle's gearbox. It is this sensor that can fail, the reasons for which are:

  • lack of contact due to water or dust;
  • no electric current.

The dashboard contains a lot of plastic parts that break quite often. Therefore, when buying a car, to prevent problems in the future, you should replace all these parts with metal analogues.

Where is the speed sensor located and why does it break?

The sensor is located on the gearbox housing, in its upper part. To get to it, you need to lift the car on a lift, or use the inspection hole.

Where is the sensor located

The device and its electrical wiring are affected by moisture, road reagents and temperature changes. The causes of the malfunction are the following:

  • breakage of connecting wires;
  • corrosion of the connector terminal block;
  • mechanical failure of the rotating rod;
  • failure of the electrical part.

The symptoms of any of the breakdowns are the same; the sensor itself cannot be repaired: only replaced. Only oxidized contacts or broken wiring can be restored.

Solving problems with the speedometer on the VAZ-2114

In order to independently diagnose problems in the speedometer, you first need to remove it. Then:

  1. Set the multimeter to AC voltage.
  2. Close the contacts on the sensor block. One is on the dashboard, the second is on ground.
  3. Manually turn the stem at the rear of the housing.

When you turn the rod, the multimeter will record fluctuations depending on the number of revolutions. If the multimeter does not detect anything, it means that there is a breakdown in the dashboard. Almost no one is interested in repairing this problem, since it is much easier to simply buy a new speed sensor and replace it. In order to replace the speed sensor, it is necessary to remove the terminals from the battery and remove the air filter and inlet pipe. Then you should remove the terminal from the speed sensor. Then you need:

  1. Remove the terminal block. There is a button on it that you can press to remove it.
  2. Remove the speed sensor from its socket.
  3. Install the new device so that its stem fits into the fixing sleeve.
  4. Tighten everything back, but do not pinch it under any circumstances, since many parts are plastic and can be easily damaged.
  5. If the sensor does not fit into the socket, then you need to repeat the procedure until everything is firmly in place.

After all these procedures, you should put all the removed car parts back in place and check the speedometer for functionality while driving the car.

As you can see, the speedometer is also a rather fragile part, mainly due to the presence of a large number of plastic parts. However, its breakdown is not considered critical; you can easily replace the speed sensor at home using a small number of available tools, such as wrenches and a multimeter.

The tachometer needle freezes on a VAZ 2114

I had a problem with the tachometer.
The zero position of the needle shifted by about 1000 revolutions (the revolutions were shown correctly, but relative to this 1000). The tachometer needle always stopped at 1000 when the engine was turned off. I confirm that most likely it was a dashboard glitch. Everything was cured by completely cutting off the power. In my case, it was enough to disconnect the battery for a few seconds. It is better, of course, to turn it off for a few minutes. After this, the tachometer needle rises clearly to the zero position. So we try, we heal.

Please tell me how to get to the speed sensor? What do you need to remove to see it?

I just took out this sensor. On the advice of forum members, I removed the air filter box and... I didn’t find the speed sensor!:pilot: After studying the instructions for removing this sensor in the book about Kalina, after 15 minutes of carefully examining the insides of the engine, I found this sensor: dance2: After removing/cleaning/installing it back, I realized that there is no need to remove anything other than it! How to find the DS my recommendations are as follows: 1 Open the hood. 2.Lean your right hand, bent at the elbow, on the center of the engine. 2.Bend your torso 60 degrees.Almost lie with your stomach on the engine. 3. Place your left hand (bent at the elbow 10 degrees) into the space between the cabin and the engine (well, where the base of the windshield wipers is) a little more than up to the elbow 4. The protruding index finger of the left hand will point to the speed sensor.

Everything is easily controlled visually!:dirol:

Dear sirs, tell me what this is: the car is standing still, and the speedometer shows some speed. At the moment, it’s short-lived (the needle will move back and forth a couple of times during the trip), but it could become more frequent. I know about the opposite situation - I’ve already replaced about four speed sensors, but this behavior is simply interesting.

Hasn't anyone had this? It's already the second week.

Thanks a lot. I'll try to dig around this weekend:snicker:

Turn on the diagnostic mode (with the ignition off, press and hold down the mileage selection button on the dashboard (instrument cluster) and turn on the ignition. All arrows should rotate 180 degrees three times.

I did this and it doesn’t help, the diagnostic needle doesn’t drop to 0, but resetting the battery helps, but what is error number 4?

Please tell me how to treat a stuck needle on the tachometer? I'm tired of resetting the battery terminal.

In order not to reset the battery terminal, simply remove and install fuse No. 7 (with the ignition off), the device will restart and force the arrows to 0.

When testing the tidy, the arrows are not set to a forced “0”, but rather are set to an incorrect “0”.

PS: My tachometer also freezes periodically. I suspect that I rarely push the tachometer needle into the high rpm zone. As a result, the lubricant in the engine has not completely cleared up there, and when the arrow does get there, it sticks slightly there, and the readings are no longer accurate.
