Rebuild the stove on the UAZ Patriot

The ventilation and heating system for the interior of UAZ-31512, UAZ-31514, UAZ-31519 and UAZ Hunter cars is very simple and primitive both in design and in operating principle. The heater with its simplest air distribution system simultaneously, in one way or another, participates in both the operation of the heating system and the operation of the UAZ interior ventilation system.

The standard heater of UAZ-31512, UAZ-31514, UAZ-31519 and UAZ Hunter cars is an extremely primitive installation consisting of a box with dampers, which contains a radiator, an electric motor with an impeller and additional resistance.

The simple incoming air distribution system includes an air intake with a mechanical control drive, two windshield blower nozzles, two corrugated hoses and heater box flaps.

On UAZ Hunter cars, since 2010, a plastic box has been added to the heater design, part number 3151-8101231, which is installed between the air intake flap and the heater radiator and is designed to collect and drain rainwater entering the heater when the air intake flap is open.

Rainwater entering through the air intake hatch into this plastic box is drained out through a rubber hose passing to the partition of the engine compartment inside the cabin.

And water or condensate from inside the heater is drained through a second rubber hose located in the lower part of its body and also discharged into the engine compartment through a hole in its partition.

The installation of a plastic box 3151-8101231 greatly reduced the intensity of the oncoming air flow entering the cabin when the car was moving and worsened natural ventilation, but rainwater no longer gets on the hot heater radiator and does not form steam in the cabin, which settles on the glass from the inside. In addition, this box prevents most of the dust, sand and dirt from entering directly into the heater, and through it into the interior.

Ventilation of the interior of UAZ-31512, UAZ-31514, UAZ-31519 and UAZ Hunter cars.

The car has natural and forced ventilation. With natural ventilation, air enters the cabin through open rotary vents or door windows. While the vehicle is moving, the incoming air flow additionally enters the cabin through an air intake installed in front of the windshield. The air intake is opened by a lever mounted to the left of the heater.

With the windows closed and forced ventilation, air is pumped into the UAZ interior by the electric heater fan without heating it. The air passes through the air intake, the disconnected heater core, the fan and exits to the driver and front passenger footwells, as well as the central part of the cabin to the rear seats. In addition, air enters the windshield blower nozzles through corrugated plastic hoses.

The intensity of forced ventilation of the cabin with the windows closed is regulated by turning on the heater electric motor to one of the modes, as well as by adjusting the amount of lifting of the air intake flap cover.

Practice shows that the capabilities of the standard ventilation system with the windows closed are very limited and it does not work effectively; there is no normal air circulation in the cabin, which leads to constant glass. Therefore, like everything else in the UAZ, it is desirable to modify the ventilation system in some way; one of the options for such modification is discussed in.

Heating the interior of UAZ-31512, UAZ-31514, UAZ-31519 and UAZ Hunter cars.

The interior of the UAZ is heated by heated air entering inside in the same way as with forced ventilation, but with the heater radiator turned on. To regulate the flow of hot liquid from the engine cooling system to the heater radiator, use a valve, which is installed on the cylinder head in cars with the UMZ-417 and UMZ-421 engines, or located inside on the front panel on the front passenger side, in cars with the ZMZ-421 engine. 409.

In UAZ Hunter cars with a ZMZ-409 engine, to simplify the procedure for controlling the heater tap, you can install a remote control system for it. More details about this in a separate section.

When the control valve is open, fluid from the engine cylinder head enters the heater radiator and is then discharged to the water pump, forming a small circulation circle parallel to the main fluid flow in the system. Fresh air from outside passes through the air intake hatch into the heater box, then by gravity, or forced by a fan, through a hot radiator, it enters the cabin already warmed up.

The flow of thermal air passing through the radiator is distributed to blow the windshield, heat the driver's feet, front passenger and through the central part of the cabin to the rear seats. The air flow can be completely directed to blowing the windshield, for which you need to close the front cover of the heater box and the flaps on the lower air distribution ducts.

The quantity and intensity of heated air entering the cabin is regulated by the opening size of the air intake flap and the rotation speed of the heater fan. Using the heater motor switch, you can select one of two modes of its operation - minimum or maximum fan speed.

The UAZ interior heater only works effectively if the temperature of the liquid in the engine cooling system is at least 80 degrees. In the cold season, to increase the temperature of the coolant, on a UAZ Hunter car it is advisable to install an insulating cover on the radiator lining, and on UAZ-31512, UAZ-31514, UAZ-31519 cars it is advisable to regulate the air flow using radiator shutters.

Refinement and improvement of the design of the UAZ Hunter heater, selection and replacement of the electric motor, seasonal maintenance of the heater.

Like any primitive design, to improve operating efficiency, the standard UAZ Hunter heater needs improvement and some simple modifications. One of the possible options for such a modification, as well as seasonal maintenance of the heater and air distribution system, is discussed in more detail in a separate section.

A large amount of space in a car has both pros and cons. An indisputable advantage, of course, is the free arrangement of passengers (of different weight categories), the ability to transport a large amount of cargo at a time. But one of the disadvantages appears in the cold season, when the thermometer drops below zero. This is especially felt by residents of regions with harsh winters, where the temperature in winter rarely rises above -20° C.

The need for an additional heater in the interior of the UAZ Patriot

Although the UAZ Patriot is equipped with a very good heater from the factory, due to the large volume of the cabin, rear row passengers often experience discomfort when driving long distances in the cold season. You can get out of this situation. To be fair, it should be noted that if the windows of the car fog up or the standard interior heater does not heat well, then this is a problem with the stove, and first you need to solve it, and only then think about installing a new one. This method of creating additional heating is also suitable for those who often transport children in the back seat of their car. Next, the question arises: which stove to choose for heating the UAZ Patriot? To do this, it is better to use the “native” Patriot one, which is installed in more expensive trim levels. She will fit perfectly into her place. You can buy a new one or look on the secondary market. But you can choose any other analogue, of which there are a great many on the market. An additional heater for the UAZ Patriot must have a radiator and a motor with a fan (12 V). You can install it either on your own or using the services of specialized services.

Design features of the heater fan

Like most similar devices, the fan of the UVZ Patriot stove is structurally composed of two units: the blades themselves, designed to pump air into the line, and the electric motor that drives the blades. The motor itself is powered from the on-board network of the SUV. The fan is an integral part of the car's interior heating system, which is activated by means of a special regulator located in the central part of the instrument panel.

The fan blades are made of high-strength plastic, resembling a jet turbine in appearance. This design contributes to the formation of maximum pumping aerodynamic capacity of the blades. The probability of failure of this unit is quite low, which cannot be said about the electric motor that spins the fan blades at high speed. And since the failure of the fan drive threatens the inoperability of the entire heating system, replacing the UAZ Patriot heater fan is an operation that every owner of an SUV should be able to perform.

Since the car is operated in less than ideal conditions, particles of dust and other debris (including insect debris) inevitably accumulate on the fan blades over time, which leads to increased load on the electric motor. This process is accompanied by an increase in current in the electrical circuit of the motor, causing it to overheat and increase the risk of jamming. The schematic diagram of the electrical equipment responsible for the operation of the fan includes the following components:

  1. A generator, which is the main source of electricity generation when the power unit is running.
  2. A battery that starts a car engine. The SUV's heating system can only operate directly from the battery for a limited time, provided that the ignition key is in the on position. Since the UAZ Patriot stove motor is an active consumer of electricity, its operation from the battery will contribute to the rapid discharge of the latter. For this reason, it is not recommended to warm up the SUV directly after a long stay - in this case, especially in winter, you risk not starting the engine itself due to a dead battery.
  3. Egnition lock.
  4. A heater operating mode switch that allows you to smoothly increase/decrease the number of revolutions of the electric motor, thereby regulating the power of the air flow supplied to the interior of the SUV.
  5. Fuse block.
  6. Resistor.
  7. Electric motor.

Installation

If you decide on your own, then first of all you need to determine the installation location. It can be determined either under the passenger seat or between the front seats (the standard heater is installed exactly between the driver and passenger seats). Next, you need to purchase everything you need (hoses, clamps, bolts, etc.). When everything is acquired, you can start. We offer you detailed instructions for installing the stove yourself:

  1. Select a location and secure the heater (for ease of operation, you can remove the front seats).
  2. Next, you need to drain the coolant from the engine cooling system.
  3. Then you need to connect the heater to the engine cooling system. This can be done either using pipes from the Patriot in the Limited configuration (which have branches for), or by connecting using a tee in the engine compartment with the coolant supply line to the main heater.
  • when choosing the first option, it may be difficult to purchase tubes, since they are not sold separately, but are assembled with the climate system; they can be purchased at “disassembly sites”;
  • if you choose option No. 2, then you need to bring the hoses under the hood, cut the aluminum tubes and connect them through a tee, in series with the standard stove.
  1. To route lines through the cabin, it is necessary to remove the floor upholstery and lay them so that they do not fray or bend during operation. Plastic clamps must be used to secure the hoses.
  2. Next, we connect the rubber hoses to the heater using clamps to connect.
  3. Then you need to connect the power supply to the new unit. For this:
  • disconnect the car from the power supply (by removing the terminals from the battery);
  • Let's find a free connector in the electrical wiring and, after checking the presence of power in it, connect to it;
  • For convenience, you need to equip the stove with its own separate switch and place it in a place convenient for you.
  1. Now you can start filling the cooling system with liquid (note that with liquid you will need more) and remove all air from the system.
  2. Before proceeding with the final assembly of the heater, it is necessary to check all connections for fluid leaks and the functionality of the new equipment.
  3. Next, you should return all dismantled parts to their place.

At this point, the installation of the UAZ Patriot interior heater can be considered complete. It would be useful to mention the disadvantages that may arise after installation:

  • the appearance of an additional ;
  • Due to the larger amount of coolant, the engine will warm up a little slower than usual.

Otherwise, you can only enjoy the warmth and comfort that the new stove will bring. If all of the above disadvantages do not scare you, then you can install it yourself. Also, this unit will be a good help at the moment when the main stove fails.

A spacious and voluminous interior is one of the main advantages of the UAZ Patriot. A large amount of free space inside the car is especially helpful when there is a need to transport large items. Among other things, the possibility of freely seating passengers in the rear seats also brings its advantages when traveling or going on vacation with a large group.

The SUV is equipped with a standard interior heater, which does its job quite well. But when the outside temperature reaches -10 degrees below zero or more, the stove’s power begins to fall short. To create comfortable conditions inside the car while the frost is blowing outside, most car owners install an additional interior heater UAZ-3163.

Selecting an additional interior heater

The UAZ Patriot stove is quite reliable, but sometimes situations occur when the device refuses to function correctly. If a breakdown occurs during a long trip, the driver and passengers will find themselves in unfavorable conditions. This is why it is so important to install an auxiliary stove. The device will not only heat the voluminous interior of the UAZ Patriot to the required temperature, but will also be a way out of a critical situation.

Which device should I choose as an additional heating source? It is advisable to install the “original” heater UAZ-3163 from more expensive configurations. There is no significant difference in whether the stove is new or purchased on the secondary market. The main thing is that the device works and is in good condition. The auxiliary heating source must include a radiator and a 12V fan.

You can carry out the installation in a specialized service or carry out all the work yourself. Installing a second heater does not require specific knowledge and does not take much time.

Before installing all the components yourself, you must first divide the work into stages, which includes:

  • Choosing the optimal location for an additional interior heating device;
  • Depressurize the system by pouring the antifreeze into a previously prepared container;
  • Connect an additional heater to the engine cooling system.

Choosing a suitable place in the Patriot’s cabin for the second stove is not difficult. You can place it between the front seats or under the passenger seats. Another option is to install it under the front seats. There is enough space, so it all comes down to the personal preferences of the car owner.

Why is the “original” heater from expensive configurations the best fit? The thing is that integrating such a device into the overall system is much easier. In this case, connection to the system is possible in parallel. With a linear connection, one significant disadvantage will emerge during operation: if the cabin becomes too hot, you will not be able to turn off one of the heaters.

True, purchasing a device from Patriot in the Limited configuration today is quite problematic and is only possible at “disassembly”. But there is another option for connecting to the system: bring the hoses under the hood and connect them to the main line through a tee. To do this you need:

  1. Install auxiliary lines inside the car by laying them under the upholstery, securing them with plastic rivets at the same time.
  2. Connect all hoses to the additional interior heater using clamps.
  3. Supply power: disconnect the battery terminals, find a free connector in the wiring and connect.
  4. Remove air from the system and fill the cooling system with liquid.
  5. Before you start using new equipment, you must check all connections and make sure there are no fluid leaks.
  6. Install the dismantled elements in their original place.

Problems with the interior heating device

But it also happens that they fail. This unit can have a great many malfunctions. Starting from a clogged cabin filter, and ending with replacing the heater radiator. The first step is to find the cause of the malfunction, and only then begin to eliminate it.

UAZ Patriot is equipped with a standard interior heating circuit. Hot coolant from the engine enters the heater radiator through the line and, after heat transfer, is returned back to the engine cooling system. From the radiator, hot air is directed through lines into the channels. On the control panel you can select the places where you want to direct the flow. There is also a temperature regulator on the panel. It is connected to the stove tap. The principle of operation is the same as that of a regular faucet: it reduces or increases the flow of coolant passing through it. The heater valve is located on the passenger side under the instrument panel. It may have such malfunctions as: jamming in any position, leaking coolant and others. Since it is controlled by a cable, this connection is not very reliable. The cable itself may stretch and not open the valve all the way, as a result of which the air coming out of the deflectors will not be hot enough. It is also possible for the cable to jump off the faucet valve control mechanism itself. In this case, it will become impossible to regulate the temperature.

Right choice

In winter you want comfortable warmth in the cabin

Installation of an additional heater in the rear of the cabin of the considered models is allowed. The choice of stove depends on the personal preferences, tastes and finances of the owner of a UAZ 469 or UAZ Hunter. In any case, the heater configuration changes. It can serve as:

  • KITB.3221-8110010;
  • heater NAMI-4 or NAMI-7,
  • stove from Zhiguli.

Auto mechanics recommend installing a NAMI-4 autonomous heater on this model, which will run on gas fuel. It is taken into account that, regardless of the choice made, the stove must have a power of 2-4 kW. The advantage of such a system is autonomous temperature control in the cabin.

Disadvantage: complicated installation.

Before you start tuning the UAZ Hunter, you need to take into account that the crane also needs to be replaced. This is due to its inconvenient location and tendency to leak. The correct solution in this case is to insert a new unit into this system. The tap is installed closer to the stove.

You need to install the corner tap inside, otherwise it may become clogged with dirt. In this situation, one fitting is led into the box, and the second is connected to a similar radiator element. An important point in this matter is the correct choice of part. It is recommended to install an adjustable tap.

You can give preference to the solenoid valve from the BMW 5 Series. It must be mounted in the gap between the outlet and inlet pipes of the stove radiator. This part is not disassembled. To modernize it, you will need to drill 4 rivets in the cover. In this case, you will get a collapsible structure that will be easy to clean. Screws are used to assemble it.
