Its production version was presented at the Moscow Automobile Exhibition on May 16, 2013. The company involved in the “promotion” of the model used the advertising slogan “Full Minced meat”. With this, AvtoVAZ tried to emphasize the rich equipment of the new product, in particular the “Lux” version. Kalina 2, like Granta, received an automatic transmission. Therefore, today we have for a test drive a domestically produced hatchback, the cheapest hot hatch in the world, Lada Kalina Sport.
How does this Kalina differ from the standard one?
The first is a visual change, it has a more aggressive aerodynamic body kit and 16 wheels, and the interior has seats with more pronounced lateral support.
On the technical side, there are many more changes. First, this is the motor. The engine was boosted to an incredible 114 horsepower, the gear ratio of the main pair was changed in the gearbox, now we have 4.3.
There are 13-inch disc brakes at the rear. Front 15 inches. There are many more changes to the suspension. Here are spring shock absorbers manufactured by Lada Sport. More rigid and lowered by about 2 cm.
In theory, all these improvements should have been... Damn, this is all wildly interesting, but let’s see how it actually drives. Come on, let's go.
So, friends, I'm driving a Lada Kalina Sport. In today's video we are talking about a completely stock car, without any modifications. The car was initially strangled from the factory; it only has 114 horses.
And yes, by the way, I would like to share information. I recently turned to the Mister Felt company and they fixed the squeaking noise in my car. Now I drive my car in absolute comfort!
I continue the theme of horses. Although earlier with the same engine there were 118, and 120, depending on who you are. Frankly speaking, the car does not move until 3000, the motor opens after 3 and right up to the cutoff, which is at 6.5 thousand revolutions.
Throughout this range, the engine's thrust is smooth, predictable, elastic, and in principle it is enough. The impression is spoiled by the gearbox. VAZ workers shortened the main pair, but did not solve their main problem.
They were left with the same terrible gap between first and second gear. Therefore, all the fun on this car begins after 3000 and from second gear.
This car also has its own issues with the suspension. The fact is that it is too compromising. How can I explain this? She is too soft and too hard at the same time.
That is, if we are talking about active cornering, then we could tighten it up a little, there are still small rolls, they are present. It is not good.
But at the same time, if you operate the car in the city, then even on uneven roads you will not have problems. Because the suspension is working, there have been no breakdowns so far, and this is surprising.
But, if we need to move towards sport, then the suspension is what needs to be changed in this car.
Brakes
There is nothing good or bad to say about the brakes. The machine is light and small. The configuration she has now is quite enough for her. I would also like to say something about the landing.
Getting into the car is absolutely uncomfortable, even though we have seats with active lateral support, you can really feel it. They stand too high. That is, the attachment points of the seats to the body have not changed.
And it feels like you’re sitting on a stool and the feeling of drive and sport is lost. Although the car is low-slung, you sit low, you sit up straight, excuse the expression, “the butt meter works as it should.”
There is no such thing here. Therefore, in any case, the compromise needs to be removed from the car and shifted towards sport. Because if we consider this car as an ordinary Kalina, well, it is an ordinary Kalina, it is noisy, it is inconvenient, the box howls, it is made of oak plastic, you and I know all this, there is no getting away from it.
The steering has also been changed. VAZ installed a shorter steering rack, now we have only 2.5 turns from lock to lock. And this is great, because now the car reacts to the slightest deviation of the steering wheel from the zero position. This is very noticeable when cornering.
Body and appearance
If the first generation of Lada Kalina was available in three body types: sedan, hatchback and station wagon, then the second generation is sold only in two: hatchback (Lada 2192) and station wagon (Lada 2194). This is explained by the reluctance to create competition for the popular Lada Granta sedan.
The color range of the new product has been supplemented with blue, red and orange metallic. Note that the bumpers are already painted to match the body color as standard.
The new Kalina borrowed the doors from its predecessor, and the hatchback also got the old roof. The car received an aggressive front bumper with a large air intake.
All modifications of Kalina 2 are equipped with new headlights with built-in running lights. The rear lights, as before, are located on the roof pillars, but the light itself protrudes more onto the wing. The hood and front fenders went to the new product from Lada Granta.
AvtoVAZ conducted its own crash test of the car. According to representatives of the plant, according to the EuroNcap method it will show three stars. An official crash test has not yet been carried out.

In terms of equipment, the new Kalina is significantly superior to its predecessor. The standard version already includes front electric windows, an airbag, a seat belt indicator, and power steering.
Most of the car's interior is made of hard plastic. The only exceptions are some of its elements: the steering wheel, upholstered in soft plastic, and rubberized climate control washers. The front seats and some elements of the dashboard remained unchanged from the first Kalina.
To be fair, it is worth noting that, for example, the interior of the Volkswagen Polo also uses mostly hard plastic.
Even the low quality of the materials used made it possible to significantly improve sound insulation and reduce vibrations inside the car. At the same time, rear passengers can clearly hear everything that is happening outside, which is due to the absence of rear fender liners.
AvtoVAZ did not forget about them, but simply saved money. At the same time, company representatives promised that they would correct the situation.
“Lux” package includes a 7-inch touch screen with a maximum resolution of 320*240, air conditioning, full power accessories, two airbags, heated front seats and windshield.
Despite the modest resolution, the display responds instantly and works without lag. The car also has a multimedia system with a built-in GLONASS navigation system.
In the basic configuration, there are no headrests on the rear sofa, and it folds in one piece, while in the top-end configuration it is folded separately.
The luggage compartment volume of Kalina 2 in the hatchback body has increased by 10 liters and is 260 liters, and in the station wagon it is 361 liters. In the “Standard” , the trunk lid can only be opened with a button from the interior, and in the “Norma” and “Lux” versions it can also be opened with a key fob.
Regardless of the configuration, a full-size spare tire is located in the cargo compartment.
An obvious drawback of all Lada Kalinas is the side windows: the front windows do not go down completely, and the rear windows only go down to the middle of the window opening.
Technical part
The range of power units of the new Lada Kalina is represented by three 1.6-liter engines of different power.
The “weakest” among them is the 87-horsepower engine (the basic versions of the first generation Kalina were equipped with 81-horsepower engines). It has proven itself well on the Lada Granta. The torque of 147 Nm is sufficient for driving in urban conditions. This engine has the lowest compression ratio (10.3:1), which makes it the most unpretentious among those offered for the new Kalina.
The second most powerful is the 98-horsepower unit with a maximum torque of 148 Nm and a compression ratio of 11:1. This engine can be combined with a Jatco AY-K3 automatic transmission.
The Japanese even considered the option of organizing the production of these transmissions in Russia, since the delivery of about 100,000 boxes was already planned for 2013.
The third and most powerful engine is a new 106-horsepower unit with a maximum torque of 148 Nm and a compression ratio of 11:1.
The torque indicators of the presented engines practically do not differ, but this does not mean that they are the same: the difference between the weakest and most powerful engines is that the first confidently picks up the car at low speeds, and the latter after 2500-2800 rpm.

Suspension and handling
The suspension of the new Kalina comes from the Lada Granta. Let us recall that AvtoVAZ engineers took the first Kalina as the basis for the Granta, in which they reconfigured the springs, increased the thickness of the stabilizers and changed the camber of the wheels. The car, despite the potholes, follows a given trajectory and confidently holds the road.
There is virtually no lateral rocking and does not cause any discomfort. The steering wheel has become more informative: it makes 3 turns until it stops, while its predecessor had 4 turns.
The cost of the basic configuration, compared to the first generation, increased by 12,000 rubles. The surcharge can be justified by an airbag and a more powerful engine.
The cost of the “Standard” version in the hatchback body is 414,000 rubles, and in the station wagon body – 430,000 rubles.
For the “Lux” package, which includes an automatic transmission (robot), rain and light sensors, air conditioning, parking sensors, ABS and ESP systems, you will have to pay 540,000 rubles.
Fans of active driving have the opportunity to purchase a “top” Kalina 2 with a manual transmission for 520,000 rubles.
Kalina 2 is one of the newest, technologically advanced and attractive models of the Lada family. A budget car with good dynamics, control and a wide range of options will certainly find its consumer.

Last August, sales of the second generation of the Lada Kalina Sport . To understand how the Lada Kalina Sport differs from the regular Kalina, we went to the Lada car dealership in Naberezhnye Chelny, which recently began selling and servicing sports versions of Lada cars.
To begin with, let’s briefly talk about the differences between the Lada Kalina Sport and a standard car.
The appearance of the sports viburnum differs as follows:
- the car has become lower, the ground clearance has been reduced by 20 mm
- the front and rear of the car are equipped with original body kits
- original plastic sills are installed on the sides
- a large aerodynamic spoiler is installed on the fifth door
- the car is equipped with larger wheels (16 inches) and low-profile tires
The interior of the Lada Kalina Sport is almost completely identical to that of the luxury Kalina hatchback. However, there are differences: sports seats with developed lateral support, the steering wheel is covered in leather with red stitching, which is also present on the gearshift lever, parking brake, and seats.
Lada Kalina Sport engine develops a maximum power of 118 hp. It is distinguished from the standard 98-horsepower VAZ-21126 engine by camshafts with a modified cam profile, original intake and exhaust systems, as well as sports firmware of the electronic engine control unit.
The gearbox here differs from the serial one in that it has changed gear ratios, as well as a 4.3 main pair (instead of 3.7). Direct transmission is now fifth, and in fourth the car allows you to accelerate confidently.
Other technical features of Lada Kalina Sport :

To evaluate how all these changes affected the car's behavior, we took it for a test drive.
This trip was interesting because I wanted to compare the behavior of the Lada Kalina Sport with the standard Kalina, which I drive every day.
The first thing I would like to note is the landing. The seats here have firmer padding and more pronounced lateral support.
Of course, these are not the same sports buckets that I rode in on a charged Kia Ceed GT, but, compared to the standard Kalinov ones, they are an order of magnitude more comfortable.
The steering wheel, covered in leather with stitching, also seemed comfortable. The steering wheel itself has not changed, but thanks to the leather trim it fits nicely in your hands and does not slip.
But the same leather trim on the gearshift lever and parking brake mostly serves a decorative function - I personally didn’t notice any difference in feel with the standard Kalina. But it's beautiful.
Having configured all the controls for ourselves, we begin to move.
The test drive took place along a standard route - from the Lada car dealership to the Forge Plant ring and back.
Just starting to move, you feel that the gearbox here is non-standard. If a regular Kalina drives almost from idle, you need to rev the engine well to accelerate confidently. But at high speeds the car pleases with fast acceleration, just have time to change gears. Thanks to the cable mechanism, the gear lever can be operated easily and quickly - the strokes are short, the effort is small.
Unlike the standard Kalina, the Lada Kalina Sport a more pleasant exhaust sound - low and bassy.
When driving around the city, the most interesting thing is to drive in third gear - for sharp acceleration or changing lanes, just stomp on the gas pedal and the car rushes forward with a growl.
Modifications that made the car lower and stiffer, as well as a short steering rack in combination with wide, low-profile tires, qualitatively changed the car's behavior on the road. The Lada Kalina has never been distinguished by its precise handling, and the loose, wobbly steering of this car is already the stuff of legends. This is not the case here – the car steers well, reacting quite quickly and accurately to steering movements. During a dynamic entry and exit from the ring, there is no hint of roll or swaying - the car rides as if on rails. In this regard, the Lada Kalina Sport behaves even better than the Lada Granta Sport, which we tested last year. Apparently, the absence of a large trunk and a short rear overhang do their job, making a positive contribution to the weight distribution of the car.
It was quite logical to expect that good handling would come at the price of comfort. However, it is not. Returning back to the car dealership, we drove along broken driveways, of which there are plenty in this area, even test SUVs. So, the car handles bumps quite well. Despite the stiffer suspension, it cannot be called gear-crushing - it is quite elastic. Of course, we should not forget that there are 16-inch wheels with low-profile tires and reduced by 20 mm. ground clearance – it’s better to be careful on broken roads.
Separately, it is worth mentioning the brakes - they have discs both front and rear. The car's braking has become much better, but the rear brakes squeak the same way as during the Lada Granta Sport test. Whether this is due to the rear beam with negative camber, or to the disc mechanisms themselves is unclear.
What we liked about the Lada Kalina Sport:
- interesting appearance
- comfortable steering wheel and seats
- improved dynamics
- good handling
What we didn't like:
- rear brake squeak (hum)
- price (today it is a considerable 546 thousand rubles)

The base engine was an eight-valve petrol 1.6 with a lightweight connecting rod and piston group. This engine is mated to a new manual transmission with cable drive, the production of which began at AVTOVAZ at the end of last year. In the new gearbox, the gear selection mechanism has been moved higher from the oil bath, and now the ease of engagement is practically independent of the oil temperature. In addition, the oil itself is put in the new box one liter less - 2.2 liters. The new manual transmission is not only more reliable, but also more comfortable: the longitudinal stroke of the lever has been reduced by three, and the transverse stroke by four centimeters. The neutral play has become significantly smaller, and the gear shifting force has been reduced threefold. VAZ workers claim that they wanted to make the box as similar as possible to the transmissions of German cars. The same transmission is also installed on the version with the most powerful and new engine for the Kalina line, 21127 - a 106-horsepower sixteen-valve engine with a modernized injection system. Lada Kalina with an automatic transmission received exactly the same engine and automatic transmission tandem that is installed on the “younger” model - Granta.
In addition, the car is now more comfortable and safer. Kalina 2 became the first production car in the line to receive a stabilization system (ESC), the model also has ABS with emergency brake assist, and airbags are even included in the basic configuration.
Richer versions are equipped with an electrically heated windshield, light and rain sensors. This, of course, is the norm for almost all foreign cars, but for Russian brands it is certainly a step forward.

The winter track at the AvtoVAZ testing ground in Sosnovka is treacherous: one mistake and you’ll end up on the roof or, even worse, stuck in a tunnel at the intersection of the tracks. I lost a little more than a second to the director of the Izhevsk Automobile Plant, Mikhail Ryabov, who had a serious fighting record behind him and who eventually took the main prize. But the time I showed on my starting track remained among the best for a long time - until the track was thoroughly rolled out. In general, there is no shame.
And I only benefited from communicating with Kalina NFR. I hope this is not our last meeting.
SPORTS CONVEYOR
Lada Sport LLC is a subsidiary of AVTOVAZ. His specialization is the development and production of sports models. Precisely sports ones, that is, hot versions based on serial ones. What is the production level? What is this - a workshop, a garage, a hangar? In short, it is a recently built full-fledged plant with a conveyor and workshops where components, assemblies and systems are assembled. This year's production plan is 4,150 cars. Of these: 2800 - Granta Sport, 1200 - Kalina Sport, 150 - Kalina NFR.

AvtoVAZ’s new product is presented on the Russian market in two body types (“hatchback” and “station wagon”), three levels of equipment, with three engines and two gearboxes.
Standard” version will be equipped with a 1.6-liter 8-valve engine producing 87 hp. and MCP. The equipment is extremely modest - the car will have electric power steering, a driver's airbag, front windows and Isofix mounts for child seats. Price - 324,000 rubles.
The “ Norma” is additionally equipped with an ABS system, central locking, audio preparation and headrests for the rear sofa. Price - 341,000 rubles.
Luxury package is available in several modifications. The first of them is equipped with a 1.6 engine (98 hp) and a manual gearbox. Equipment: front passenger airbag, heated seats, full power accessories, semi-automatic air conditioning, multimedia system with touch screen, R14 alloy wheels and fog lights. Price - 405,000 rubles. Additional payment for an automatic transmission is 40,000 rubles.
The same Luxury , but with a 106-horsepower engine, is equipped only with a manual transmission and costs 408,000 rubles . Any of the versions can be chosen in a station wagon body, the additional payment for which will be only 7,000 rubles.
In addition, over time, Kalina will be equipped with an ESP system, navigation, rain and light sensors, and parking sensors, which will naturally increase the cost. In the meantime, the most expensive Lada Kalina is a station wagon with an automatic transmission in the “Lux” version for 452,600 rubles.

The base engine was an eight-valve petrol 1.6 with a lightweight connecting rod and piston group. This engine is mated to a new manual transmission with cable drive, the production of which began at AVTOVAZ at the end of last year. In the new gearbox, the gear selection mechanism has been moved higher from the oil bath, and now the ease of engagement is practically independent of the oil temperature. In addition, the oil itself is put in the new box one liter less - 2.2 liters. The new manual transmission is not only more reliable, but also more comfortable: the longitudinal stroke of the lever has been reduced by three, and the transverse stroke by four centimeters. The neutral play has become significantly smaller, and the gear shifting force has been reduced threefold. VAZ workers claim that they wanted to make the box as similar as possible to the transmissions of German cars. The same transmission is also installed on the version with the most powerful and new engine for the Kalina line, 21127 - a 106-horsepower sixteen-valve engine with a modernized injection system. Lada Kalina with an automatic transmission received exactly the same engine and automatic transmission tandem that is installed on the “younger” model - Granta.
In addition, the car is now more comfortable and safer. Kalina 2 became the first production car in the line to receive a stabilization system (ESC), the model also has ABS with emergency brake assist, and airbags are even included in the basic configuration.
Richer versions are equipped with an electrically heated windshield, light and rain sensors. This, of course, is the norm for almost all foreign cars, but for Russian brands it is certainly a step forward.
