Hi all!
I hope the information from this post will be useful and will be useful to someone! Good luck on the roads and a full tank! The “symptoms” of a faulty throttle position sensor include the following:
1. Increased idle speed. 2. The engine stalls in neutral gear. 3. Idle speed floats. 4. Jerks during acceleration. 5. Deterioration in dynamics. 6. In some cases, the Check Engine light may come on.
Diagnosis of the throttle position sensor is carried out as follows:
1. Turn on the ignition, then check the voltage between the slider contact and the minus with a voltmeter. The voltmeter should show no more than 0.7 V. 2. Next, turn the plastic sector, thereby fully opening the damper, then measure the voltage again. The device should show at least 4 V. 3. Now turn off the ignition completely and pull out the connector. Check the resistance between the slider contact and any terminal. 4. Slowly, turning the sector, monitor the voltmeter readings. Make sure that the needle moves smoothly and slowly; if you notice jumps, the throttle position sensor is faulty and must be replaced.
Replacing the throttle position sensor:
1. Disconnect the wire from the “–” terminal of the battery. 2. Disconnect the block with wires from the throttle position sensor by pressing the plastic latch. 3. Unscrew the two mounting screws and remove the throttle position sensor from the throttle pipe. 4. Install the new sensor in the reverse order, but do not forget about the foam ring. The throttle position sensor does not require any adjustment, since the controller perceives idle speed (i.e. the throttle valve is completely closed) as the zero mark.
The “symptoms” of a faulty idle speed sensor include the following:
1. Spontaneous unregulated change in engine speed (sudden decrease or increase). 2. When turning on a “cold” engine, there is no increase in speed. 3. When using additional vehicle devices (heater, headlights), the idle speed is simultaneously reduced. 4. The engine stalls at idle and when shifting gears. It is necessary to remember that the readings of the VAZ 2110 injector idle speed sensor are not “readable” by the automatic on-board power system, and it is not integrated into the “Check Engine” alarm system.
Diagnostics of the idle speed controller is carried out as follows:
There are several ways to analyze the idle speed sensor, but the main ones - the simplest and most effective - are the methods described below:
1. First you need to “get” to the device, disconnect it from the connecting block of wires 2. Using the most common voltmeter, check for the presence of voltage - the “minus” goes to the engine, and the “plus” to the terminals of the same block of wires A and D. 3. Turns on ignition, and the received data is analyzed - the voltage should be within twelve volts, if less, then most likely there are problems with the battery charge; if there is no voltage, then you will have to check both the electronic control unit and the entire circuit. 4. Then we continue the inspection with the ignition on, and analyze terminals A:B, C:D one by one - the optimal resistance will be about fifty-three ohms; During normal operation of the IAC, the resistance will be infinitely high.
Also, with the sensor removed and the ignition on, if you connect a power supply to it, the conical needle of the sensor should move out; if this does not happen, it means it is faulty.
1. Remove the negative terminal of the battery. 2. Disconnect the IAC from the block harness. 3. Using a multimeter, we measure the resistance of the external and internal windings of the IAC, while the resistance parameters of contacts A and B, and C and D should be 40-80 Ohms. 4. If the instrument scale is zero, it is necessary to replace the IAC with a serviceable one, and if the required parameters are obtained, we check the resistance values in pairs B and C, A and D. 5. The instrument must detect an “open circuit.” 6. With such indicators, the IAC is in good working order, and if they are absent, the regulator must be replaced.
If the problem lies precisely in the operation of the regulator, then you should not rush and immediately go to a car service center, since you can clean the idle speed sensor yourself, as well as replace it.
Cleaning and replacing the idle air control.
The first thing you need to do is purchase a carburetor cleaner, and then get down to business: 1. The wire block is disconnected from the sensor. 2. Afterwards, both of its fastenings are unscrewed, and the sensor is removed. 3. If necessary, the IAC is completely cleaned of possible debris and contaminants on the cone needle and spring. 4. Also, do not forget to clean the mounting hole on the throttle assembly, where the conical needle of the sensor enters. 5. After cleaning, install everything in its original location.
If nothing has changed in the operation of the car - the same problems and inconveniences are present - then the regulator should be replaced.
It is worth noting that when purchasing you need to pay attention to the end mark 04. Sensors are produced with mark 01 02 03 04, so look at the mark of the old sensor and purchase the same one. If you put, for example, a sensor labeled 04 instead of 01, the sensor will not work. The following replacement is allowed: 01 to 03, 02 to 04 and vice versa.
Replacing the idle speed sensor can also be done without any problems:
1. The on-board system of the car is de-energized. 2. The block with wires is disconnected from the XX regulator. 3. The screws are unscrewed and finally the sensor is removed. 4. Attach the new device in the reverse order.
Determining whether the idle speed sensor is faulty. Different testing methods
The most reliable diagnostic method is, of course, computer diagnostics on a test bench, which has the ability to reproduce ECU pulse signals.
By the way, the main difficulty in independently testing this part is the difficulty of simulating controller impulses.
So, ways to check:
- Visual method, involves manual checking;
- Using electronic measuring instruments. For example, a multimeter or voltmeter;
- On a stand assembled with your own hands;
- At car service centers.
All self-diagnosis methods are imperfect; they only help determine the integrity of the coil windings and the closedness of the entire circuit.
The algorithm of actions is different, however, the preparatory stage is the same for all methods:
- The car is put on the handbrake, the wheels are secured with shoes;
- The negative pin of the battery is disconnected;
- The DXH is located, the plug is removed from the ECU connector to disconnect the valve from it.
The following steps depend on the selected method:
— manual check
- The sensor is removed. To do this you need to unscrew the screws. Jamming often occurs; in this case, it is necessary to drill them;
- The released DXH, suspended, is reconnected with the on-board computer;
- The engine starts (an assistant can do this). The rod is completely retracted into the body. The ECU will send a pulse that will cause the rod to extend to a certain length.
In this way, you can ensure that the rod is in good condition and compatible with the computer.
- A visual inspection of the coils is carried out (checking for breaks), spare channel (contamination), needle wear
After this, you can begin assembling a homemade test bench.
— testing on a stand , self-assembled
- Charger 6V;
- Plug blocks (purchase in store);
- Assemble the device for testing using a simple circuit (using a capacitor, charging transformer, switches). The diagram can be easily found on specialized forums on the Internet;
- Carry out all the above verification procedures;
- If the lamp on the stand lights up at full power, it means a malfunction or contamination of the rod. By flushing with WD-40, the performance of the DXH is restored. And if the rod is bent or broken, the entire regulator will need to be replaced.
— multimeter testing
- In ohmmeter mode, the resistance value between outputs A and B, C and D should be in the range of 40-80 Ohms;
- On the voltmeter, the needle should deflect to a reading of 12 - 20V.
The idle speed of the VAZ 2110 is floating, diagnostics and replacement of the IAC
Many people underestimate the importance of sensors or idle air control. But in fact, the speed stability depends on the correct operation of the IAC. It also prevents the car from stalling when the gearshift lever is in an intermediate position.
In this material we will talk about the meaning, device, and signs of malfunction of this device. We’ll also tell you how you can easily replace the IAC with your own hands.
Appearance of the device
Device role
On injection engines that are installed on the VAZ 2110, the XX regulator serves to control the stable operation of the power unit. It is unlikely that you will be pleasantly surprised by a situation in which the idle speed starts to fluctuate, and every now and then the car will stall.
Some people do not know about another very important role of the idle speed sensor - warming up the power unit in case of low air temperature.
It is generally accepted that if there is an injector, there is no need to warm up the engine. The opinion is wrong. Do not overstress the engine, but first let it run for a while without increased speed. This will have a positive effect on the reliability and service life of the motor. .
Location
Externally, the IAC looks quite simple. It looks like a small electric motor. Its design includes three parts:
- Stepper motor;
- Spring;
- A rod with a needle at the end.
And the desired regulator is located near the mechanism that is responsible for changing the position of the throttle valve. There is no complex fastening system. To dismantle you just need to remove the mounting bolts.
How does he work
The function of the IAC is to regulate the amount of fuel supplied. He may indicate the need to increase or decrease the quantity. An important nuance is that the sensor performs its functions directly when the idle speed is turned on.
Troubleshooting
It is not difficult to understand that the problem is in the sensor; for this you do not need to go for expensive diagnostics. There are visible indicators that help determine this breakdown:
- The idle speed of the VAZ 2114 floats. This is especially noticeable if you additionally turn on some devices, such as a stove, car radio, light;
- When switching to neutral speed, the engine stalls;
- The motor is tripping;
- Body vibration is also possible. All together, these are already signs of a malfunction of the idle speed sensor. Also an indicator is the lighting of the “Check engine” icon, but in this case it may not always light up.
There are several solutions to this problem:
- clean it;
- replace the failed spare part with a new one.
But before we decide what will be necessary in this particular case, we first find out whether it can be repaired. In any case, for accurate diagnosis, the regulator must be removed. Below is a picture that, to simplify the search, will show what the idle speed sensor looks like.
Replacing the IAC on a VAZ 2114
We have decided on the appearance, but in order to remove it, we need to decide where the idle speed sensor is located. We focus on the gas pedal, to which the cable goes. We look for the idle speed regulator on the VAZ 2114 opposite this cable, namely on the throttle valve, which is located below its position sensor. It is glued or attached with just two bolts.
To remove it you need:
- Be sure to turn off the car’s ignition and remove the battery terminals;
- Pull out the connector by disconnecting the wires leading to it;
- Unscrew the wires with a suitable screwdriver and remove the spare part itself;
- If the sensor is glued, you will first have to pull out the throttle assembly completely, and then carefully peel off the sensor.
Signs of breakdown
Based on certain signs, it can be determined that the IAC is out of order and needs to be repaired or completely replaced with a new device.
These signs include:
- Floating idle speed;
- Problems with starting the engine; it starts with difficulty even with the gas pedal pressed;
- It is not possible to increase the speed even when the engine has warmed up sufficiently;
- The engine suddenly begins to stall when shifting into neutral;
- The speed decreases when you turn on energy-consuming devices - stove, air conditioner, audio system, headlights, etc.
But replacing the regulator is not always the right decision. In some cases, removing the old sensor and installing a new device in its place will not bring any results. And all because the culprits of the malfunction may be other elements, such as spark plugs or a fuel filter.
Functionality check
If the engine stalls, the speed fluctuates, or turns out to be high, you must definitely check whether the IAC is working.
To check, you will first need to dismantle the fastenings of the throttle assembly, and then carefully move it literally 10 millimeters.
You will need a voltmeter with which you can check whether there is voltage going to the sensor and what its indicators are. In advance, connect the negative terminal from the battery to ground, and connect the voltmeter to the terminals marked with the letters A and D. Next, check the table.
Indications
What do they mean
The voltmeter shows less than 12V
This means that the battery is most likely dead.
There is no data on the meter
The problem should be looked for in the wiring circuit or in the electronic engine control unit
Voltmeter shows 12V or more
Be sure to check the idle air control resistance. There are problems with him. The tester is connected to 4 pins. Normal resistance readings are 50 or 55 ohms
Additionally, do a pairwise check. In this case, the resistance should be infinitely large. If the XX sensor shows different numbers, then the regulator requires mandatory and immediate replacement.
There is another way to check the functionality of the device. To do this, you need to remove the sensor and connect the block. Press the needle with your finger and watch it extend. When the ignition is turned off, the needle should push.
If there is no shock, you can still try to solve the problem by simply cleaning the device. Use a universal and all-powerful product called WD40. Wet the entire mechanism thoroughly with it and, armed with cotton swabs, clean everything you can reach. When cleaning, pay special attention to the needle and stem.
If these measures do not help, there is nothing else left but to replace the IAC.
Symptoms of a problem
The first sign is unstable engine operation in idle mode. This can be easily heard. Changes in speed will be clearly audible. In addition, the engine will certainly vibrate during such operation.
When the driver shifts into neutral, the engine immediately stalls. This can often be seen in front of traffic lights. Also, a malfunction of the IAC can be judged by unstable speed.
How else do you check the idle air control 2110? It also happens that immediately after starting the engine, it does not operate at high speeds. When you press the accelerator pedal there is no engine response. You can also think about replacing the regulator when the engine speed drops when you turn on electrical appliances.
Such malfunctions can occur individually or in combination. But when they appear all at once, this indicates a neglected situation. The car owner must know how to check the idle air regulator, because the device can fail at any time.
Replacement
To replace the XX regulator, you do not have to be a professional. By doing the work yourself, you will gain a rewarding experience and can also save a fair amount of money.
The entire procedure must be carried out in strict sequence, which will allow everything to be done correctly and efficiently. Maybe even better than at a service station.
- Unplug your car. To do this, simply remove the negative terminal from your car's battery. We don't need short circuits or electric shocks.
- Disconnect the connector from the sensor. In the case of an injection engine installed on your VAZ 2110, to disconnect the pad you just need to press the plastic latch.
- Remove the two screws. Moreover, it is better to unscrew the left fastener first, and then the right screw.
Removing the device
- This will allow you to achieve what you want - remove the idle air control. Further operations are simple, like all previous activities.
- Before installing the new sensor in its rightful place, use regular engine oil to treat the O-ring.
- Inspect the condition of this same O-ring. During prolonged use, the seal may become deformed and become cracked. In this case, it is better to replace it with a new one.
- Next comes the calibration stage. You won’t have to make any serious efforts, since the electronic relay will take care of all the main calibration tasks.
- Turn the ignition on for a few minutes and then turn it off.
- If after the operations and calibration the revolutions stop floating, they are not increased and stable, you did everything right, and it was the XX sensor that was to blame.
As you can see, IAC is a fairly important element in the car system, which must be carefully monitored. A pleasant fact is that if troubles arise with the regulator, you can always replace it with your own hands in a matter of minutes.
How to determine the malfunction of the IAC VAZ-2110: signs
Every car, without exception, needs timely maintenance.
This is quite normal, because different components have certain operational properties. And the breakdown of any device causes a lot of inconvenience to the driver. However, you shouldn’t give up right away. Every problem can be resolved if the right approach is taken. Thus, it will be quite easy to explain the reasons for each breakdown.
One of these troubles that prevents the driver from driving a VAZ-2110 normally is a breakdown of the idle speed sensor (IAC or IAC).
A little theory
A sensor is an element that belongs to the category of measuring instruments. Basically, such a node is used to analyze, process and convert incoming information with subsequent output to a display board.
Among car owners, the idle speed sensor is called the abbreviation IAC. This is one of the most important parts in the internal combustion engine, which is responsible for the stable operation of the vehicle.
This regulator is an actuator, and it is not easy to identify problems with its operation. All this is due to the fact that VAZ cars do not have self-diagnosis. For example, if the IAC breaks down, the “check engine” error will not appear.
How does IAC work?
The functional unit regulates the volume of air supplied to the engine when the throttle valve is closed. This is necessary to ensure automated control of engine speed at idle.
The sensor is also involved in the process of warming up the internal combustion engine to operating temperature in cold weather. IAC operating range is from -40 to +130 degrees.
When the ignition in the car is turned on, the rod on the regulator extends all the way and rests against the calibration point of the throttle pipe. The IAC counts the steps and the valve returns.
What could be the sensor malfunctions?
Failures in the functioning of the regulator cause a large number of problems for the car owner.
Accordingly, ignoring the problem for a long time can provoke an accident. Therefore, you should not neglect your own safety and it is advisable to identify the malfunction in the early stages. Signals of a faulty regulator:
- The engine speed constantly fluctuates. You may notice a sudden increase/decrease in this indicator.
- When the engine is cold started, there is no increase in speed.
- When you turn on additional electrical appliances (headlights, stove, etc.), the idle speed decreases noticeably.
- The internal combustion engine stops at idle and when the gear is engaged.
In practice, there are other signs of IAC malfunctions, but in order not to make a mistake and not confuse a sensor malfunction with other failures, it is important to know how the unit in question is checked.
Checking the serviceability of the IAC
Initially, put the car on the handbrake and place wheel chocks under the wheels. Next, gain access to the device, disconnect it from the supply wire block. The next step is to check the voltage using a regular voltmeter. Contacts to be checked: minus of the internal combustion engine and plus on the contacts of the wire block A, D.
To perform a proper check, turn on the ignition and evaluate the information you receive. The voltage on the device should be no more than 12 Volts. If the indicator is less, then there may be problems with the battery. If there is no voltage at all, then you need to check the electronic control unit and the entire circuit.
Next, carry out the inspection with the ignition on. Check pins A:B, C:D. The optimal resistance should be around 53 ohms. With the sensor removed and the ignition on, if you connect a power supply to it, the conical needle should move. If nothing like this happens, the node is faulty.
Otherwise, the malfunction lies in the operation of the regulator, but do not panic and immediately go to a service station. You can replace the unit in question or clean it yourself.
Replacing IAC on Renault Logan
The procedure is not complicated, so there is no need to contact a service center. You must first reset the negative terminal of the battery.
After the owner has changed the DXX, it is necessary to adapt:
- connect the battery;
- turn on the ignition and do not start the engine for 20 seconds;
- we start the internal combustion engine and wait 3 minutes, then turn it off;
- the procedure is repeated 5 times.
That's it, you can operate the car as normal.
Cleaning or replacing IAC on a VAZ-2110
Servicing the regulator is a fairly simple matter and does not require much knowledge and skills from the motorist.
Initially, buy a carburetor cleaner and you can get to work.
- Disconnect the wire block from the sensor.
- Unscrew the two fasteners to remove the assembly.
- If necessary, completely clean the device from any dirt on the cone needle and spring.
- Do not bypass the seat on the throttle assembly; it also needs to be cleaned. Upon completion of the procedure, put everything in its place.
- If after the cleaning measures nothing has changed, all the symptoms of breakdowns remain, then the best solution would be to simply replace the regulator.
The process of replacing the sensor is also quite simple:
- Disconnect power from the battery.
- Disconnect the power supply from the regulator.
- Unscrew the fastening screws and remove the sensor.
- Installing a new device occurs in the reverse order.
To summarize the article, we note that the idle speed control can cause a lot of trouble for the car owner if it is not serviced in a timely manner. Therefore, if you detect the slightest signs of breakdown of this unit, we recommend that you carry out preventive maintenance or completely replace the sensor as soon as possible. Otherwise, breakdowns of this element can lead to the most unforeseen situations during the trip.
How to clean the IAC?
23.10.2012
We recently figured out what IAC is. and what it is eaten with. We examined the principle of operation and signs of malfunction.
I repeat once again that the IAC (idle air sensor) is not equipped with a self-diagnosis system. Therefore, in this case the check will not light up, the on-board computer (bc) will be silent. If the engine does not maintain speed and stalls after resetting the gear, then the idle speed sensor is probably not working. In this case, you need to check (How to check the IAC (Idling Air Sensor)?) and replace the idle air sensor. But there is another option: try cleaning (How to clean the IAC?) and repairing (How to repair the IAC?) the idle air regulator.
How to clean the idle speed sensor (IAC)?
If the sensor does not work, then you can try washing and cleaning the sensor before spending money on a new IAC. Cleaning the rcx is an easy and quick process. To do this we will need carburetor cleaner or wd-40.
On a VAZ 2114 with a 1.6 liter engine, you first need to unscrew the 2 nuts securing the throttle assembly to the receiver. Then you need to move the throttle assembly away from the end of the receiver without removing it (by 1 cm).
- First, disconnect the wire block from the sensor.
- Apply cleaner to a cotton swab and clean the contacts.
- Take a small Phillips screwdriver and unscrew the 2 sensor mounts. (If there are no fastenings, then the sensor is seated on the varnish; in this case, you need to remove the entire throttle assembly).
- We take out the sensor and look at its condition: If the sensor is covered in oil and black dirt, then the conclusion follows that in addition to cleaning the sensor, you need to clean the entire throttle valve (How to clean and wash the throttle valve?).
- Take WD-40 or carburetor cleaner and generously spray it on the conical needle with a spring, thereby cleaning it from dirt. Then we dry the sensor and install it back. Before installation, check the distance from the sensor body to the needle (23mm).
Distance from sensor body to needle
If no changes are observed in the operation of the engine and sensor at idle, it means that the cone needle guides are worn out (replace with a new sensor) or the wire inside the sensor is broken.

The main symptoms of a malfunction of the idle speed sensor on a VAZ-2110 (+ sensor checking algorithm)
Any injection engine is very sensitive to the performance of electronics and sensors. It is enough for the most seemingly insignificant component to fail, and the engine’s operating mode is disrupted, power drops, and fuel consumption increases. One of such elements on VAZ-2110 engines is the idle speed sensor. Let's figure it out together today how to check, replace, select it.
Cleaning Features
How to clean the idle speed sensor on a VAZ 2114 when it is removed and is in the hands of the car owner? It is necessary to spray the tip of the sensor, the so-called needle, with a few clicks on the can.
The needle can be either plastic or metal, but the needle material does not affect the operation of the engine in any way.
Attention: under no circumstances should the liquid itself get into the inside of the sensor (under the spring). If this happens, you need to blow it out with plenty of air. Otherwise, cleaning fluid may enter the sensor mechanism and damage the internal lubrication, which will lead to rapid failure of the idle speed control.
When cleaning the internal seat of the pxx sensor, it is necessary to correctly dose the cleaning liquid so that after all the procedures you do not have to clean and dry the spark plugs.
Idle speed sensor for VAZ-2110
Idle speed regulator.
First, let's decide on the catalog number and price of the unit. An idle speed sensor with the original catalog number 2112-1148300 . Its price for 2020 is about 500-550 rubles, depending on the greed of the seller.
By the way, exactly the same regulator is installed on all Priora and Kalina, Tavria, Nanos and Sens.
Be careful not to confuse the sensor we need from below.
How does it work and how does it not work?
The sensor, or idle air control, is designed to dose air into the intake manifold while the throttle valve is closed.
Idle speed sensor disassembled.
The device is not too complicated. It consists of a stepper electric motor, a calibrated spring-loaded cone and a rod. Installed in the intake manifold after the throttle valve . It is this regulator that is responsible for the smooth and smooth operation of the engine at idle speed.
Sensor on the throttle assembly.
Simply put, the idle air control sensor is a simple valve or actuator that controls the air supply when the throttle is closed, according to commands from the electronic engine control unit. When starting the engine in cold weather, the ECU opens the idle speed control slightly and supplies more fuel to the combustion chamber, increasing the speed to speed up the engine warm-up.
Once the engine warms up to operating temperature, the stepper motor moves the conical valve stem forward and reduces the amount of air consumed, thereby reducing the speed. This is how the sensor works.
Signs of sensor malfunction
But it does not work in cases where:
- the engine does not hold idle, the speed fluctuates;
- the engine stalls at idle and when driving in neutral with the throttle closed;
- a cold engine does not start without an open throttle, that is, until we press the gas pedal, the engine will not start;
- low and unstable idle when the engine warms up.
In this case, the Check Engine lamp will not light up .
If it lights up, then we look for the cause in the throttle position sensor. In the case where the symptoms are present, but the lamp does not light, the cause should be sought in our sensor. Therefore, now we will check its functionality.
Do-it-yourself idle speed sensor cleaning
Have you noticed that your car won't idle? The reason may lie in the clogging of the idle speed sensor channel, which is why the sensor rod cannot “move” freely. In addition to problems with the stability of idle speed, the car may respond untimely to the release of the gas pedal, reducing speed more slowly than usual, and vice versa - sharply reduce speed when the climate control is turned on, and also slowly gain speed when the gas pedal is pressed. The solution to this problem is very simple - you just need to clean the idle speed sensor yourself.
You will need:
- screwdriver; — cleaning fluid for carburetors; — spanners and Torx keys;
- any light, lint-free fabric.
Progress
As with other work related to the car engine, self-cleaning of the idle speed sensor is carried out with the engine turned off and cooled down. The work must be carried out with the engine cooled down.
The first step is to remove the air duct that connects the air filter to the throttle cover. Let's unscrew the two clamps and remove the water duct so that a little later it does not interfere with the work. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube, then remove the throttle valve cover. In most cases, the cover is also secured with a clamp, but access to this clamp is often difficult. Also, its fastening may be on screws, which, again, can be quite difficult to get to, so it is worth preparing 2-3 screwdrivers of various lengths in advance. To make access easier, try to remove all interfering parts.
Cleaning must be carried out with the utmost care.
First of all, spray the throttle valve (closed) with our carburetor cleaning fluid. In most cases, aerosol cans with this liquid produce a fairly powerful jet and spray the mixture in all directions, so you should not immediately press the spray button hard so as not to splash other parts nearby. It is best to spray the composition with short, gentle pressures.
Having sprayed the composition, wipe the damper with a lint-free cloth, then spray the liquid again, but this time we will also cover the walls of the chamber. Wipe everything again with the same cloth, choosing a clean place on it. We repeat this procedure until the space above the throttle is completely cleared.
Now we need to open the valve, for which we will carefully turn the throttle sector. The opened space will need to be cleaned in the same way as we did with the damper, the only difference being that here all actions must be performed even more carefully, preventing dirt from getting into the intake manifold.
We clean until our damper begins to turn smoothly, without jamming, and closes tightly.
Next, we will disconnect the idle speed sensor from the wire connector, for which we will need to unscrew the mounting screws using a wrench. We remove the idle speed sensor, in the fastener of which there is a small rubber sealing ring (you need to be extremely careful not to lose this ring). Next, with the damper open, we will need to plug the air duct hole with a cloth and clean all the parts until they shine, not losing sight of the regulator seat.
We clean the sensor with the same liquid for cleaning carburetors. We do everything extremely carefully so as not to accidentally displace its rod. Well, the last thing we need to do is wipe the throttle cover, then reinstall all the removed parts.
Important! If, when cleaning the sensor, you still move its rod, be sure to adjust it so that the rod is in its original place.

Checking the sensor yourself
The sensor is located in the throttle body and to remove it for inspection, you just need to unscrew two screws.
To dismantle the IAC, you need to disconnect the block and unscrew two screws.
Before dismantling, you need to thoroughly clean the place of its attachment from dust and dirt and remove the negative terminal from the battery. But first, a check.
Sensor connection diagram.
We look at the connection diagram and check the sensor using a conventional multimeter in the following sequence:
- Check for power supply to the sensor . To do this, measure the voltage at the two outer contacts of the block, A and D. Turn on the ignition, place the black probe of the multimeter on the engine ground, and the positive probe on the contacts one by one. The voltage should be within 12 Volts. If it is less or absent altogether, we look for an open circuit or blame the electronic control unit for everything. But first, we check the voltage at the terminals from ECU 4 and 54. Here, naturally, there should also be 12 V.
The voltage is normal.
It cannot be said that this testing method 100% guarantees the functionality of the sensor; we only checked its electrical part. The mobility of the cone valve and the magnitude of its stroke are of great importance. And this can only be checked either at a special stand or with a special tester.
Where is the idle speed sensor of the Chevrolet Niva
Regardless of the modification of the engine and its attachments, the sensor is always on the throttle. The device has a separate output with sockets for screws, where the assembly is located.
The top photo shows the throttle. Viewed from the proposed angle, the device is practically invisible. A more detailed picture shows the module itself.
How to check and replace the idle air control on a VAZ 2110
On any injection engine there is increased sensitivity to how the electronics and sensors operate. A component fails, which, at first glance, is of little importance and the engine immediately disrupts its operation: a drop in power is observed, and fuel consumption increases significantly. One of such elements on the VAZ 2110 is the idle air control.
Unfortunately, such a problem occurs much more often than we would like, and almost every car enthusiast can encounter it in his or her practice. In this regard, the question arises about how to check the idle air control on a VAZ 2110 injector?
External manifestations of DX problems and the causes of their occurrence
- Instability of speed in idle mode. The “triple” of the motor is noticeable;
- Slowing down the rotation of the shaft, it is worth turning on any additional equipment (glass cleaner, air conditioner);
- In normal condition, in the case of a cold start, the engine begins to operate at frequent speeds; as it warms up, the speed decreases. If such an effect is not observed, it means that the DXH is not working correctly;
- At the moment of changing speeds, the car may stall completely.
As you can see, these symptoms are similar to the symptoms of a faulty PDZ sensor, however, due to the lack of a self-diagnosis function, the Check on the display does not light up, as is the case with the PDZ sensor. Therefore, faults will need to be identified through testing.
The idle air control is a fairly durable part. The service life is calculated at 200,000 mileage. However, it is subjected to heavy loads, as a result of which it often fails. There may be many reasons for this, but they can be combined into several, frequently occurring groups:
- Contamination of the bypass highway;
- Opening of the electrical circuit due to breaks and burnouts of the windings and pins;
- Wear and breakage of the needle, as well as the spring;
- Stem jamming;
- The DXX model does not match the version of the on-board computer (ECU firmware).
What role does this sensor play?
It is a kind of regulator that controls the work performed by the power unit. No one will like it if the revs openly float when idling, and the car itself simply stalls. But not everyone also knows that when the outside air temperature drops, it warms up the power unit.
Some people believe that since there is an injector, there is no need to warm up the engine. This statement is not true. Do not overstress the engine. Let it run a little first without over-revving. At the same time, of course, the engine will serve its owner much longer.
Upon external examination, there is nothing remarkable about the sensor.
It consists of three elements:
- Electric motor stepper.
- Spring.
- A rod with a needle located at its end.
In terms of its external outline, it looks like a small electric motor. Many people ask the question: where is the idle speed control of the VAZ 2110? It can be found near the mechanism that is responsible for how the throttle valve changes its position. This is not to say that fixing it is difficult. It's easy to dismantle. To do this, simply unscrew the mounting bolts.
Checking status
If you have a tester for checking, the procedure is simplified. But you can diagnose performance without the help of special analyzers. Here you cannot do without the help of a friend, colleague, neighbor or just an acquaintance. You need to connect the connector to the removed sensor. Gently place your finger on the tapered needle and its tip. At the same time, you need to remember that you cannot put pressure on the needle. After this, please start the car (turn on the ignition). The finger should feel slight vibrations (shocks). This indicates the operating condition of the regulator.

Next, we inspect the IAC itself to identify its contamination. It is necessary to clean it, as this will increase its service life and affect the engine speed and its operation. It is easy to clean. We take a special cleaner designed for the carburetor. It is inexpensive, sold in any auto store, as well as in many hypermarkets in the car department. Dip a cotton swab into the liquid and carefully rinse all contacts.
We also fill the rod, spring and cone needle with cleaner and use an old toothbrush to remove all dirt. To improve performance, we also clean the throttle valve. Before returning the IAC to its place, it is better to also clean the valve and its seat, as well as the entire surface area on which the O-ring is attached. We coat the sealing ring itself with engine oil and put everything back in place in reverse order.
Differences between a fake and an original
Unfortunately, today you can find a lot of counterfeit products on the automobile market. You can distinguish an original from a fake by a number of criteria.
Counterfeit has the following characteristic features:
- the black metal case is exactly 1 mm shorter;
- There are three white rivets on the body. They don't have hats. Unlike counterfeits, the original has them;
- the counterfeit has a white spring, while the original has a black spring;
- the color of the regulator ring on the fake is black, but in the original it has a reddish tint;
- the counterfeit tip has darker shades compared to the original;
- fakes and originals have external differences in the design of the boxes;
- in the original the yellow sticker is framed. Whoever is counterfeiting this part has overlooked this.
If you are extremely careful, recognizing a fake is not difficult.
How to check the idle air control?
If a similar problem arises, the question immediately arises: how to check the idle air control on a VAZ 2110?
The following points may indicate a breakdown:
- When idling, floating speed occurs.
- It is very difficult to start the engine even with the gas pedal fully depressed.
- When the engine is sufficiently warmed up, the speed does not drop at all.
- When shifting into neutral, the engine suddenly stops.
- When energy-consuming appliances, such as a stove, are turned on, this leads to a decrease in speed.
What decision needs to be made in this case?
Some see the solution to the problem in that the device simply needs to be changed. But replacing the idle speed regulator VAZ 22110 does not always lead to the expected result. This is possible if the culprit is a completely different reason. It can be hidden in the spark plugs and fuel filter.
The check begins with dismantling the fasteners that secure the throttle assembly. After the fastenings are loosened, it is gently moved slightly to the side. You need to see if there is voltage at the sensor. If yes, what are its indicators? And for this you will need to use the battery voltage, connect it to ground, and the device connect to the terminals, which are designated “A” and “D”.
Depending on the measurement results, certain conclusions can be drawn. If the needle on the scale shows less than 12 V, this most likely indicates a low battery. It may also happen that the instrument needle does not deviate at all. This indicates a break in the circuit. You should find this place.
The device may display a voltage exceeding 12 V. Then we can conclude that the problem lies in the resistance of the regulator. To measure it you will need a tester. Normal indicators are characterized by values of 50 or 55 Ohms. Additionally, a pairwise check is carried out. The resistance indicators should be infinitely large. If the measurement produces any other result, this indicates the need to replace the idle speed sensor.
Checking the sensor by touch
You can check the operation of the sensor by touch. The block is connected to the sensor, and the needle is pressed with a finger. In a normal situation, she should make her movements in jerks. If there are no shocks, then you can simply try to clean the device. For this purpose, you can use the WD universal tool. It completely wets the entire sensor. The rod with the needle is processed especially carefully. If there are no positive results, the sensor must be replaced.
Replacing the sensor yourself
Some people naively believe that you need to be a professional to replace the sensor. Nothing like this. This kind of work can be done independently, saving a certain amount of money.
The main thing is to do everything correctly and in a certain sequence:
- The electronics are disconnected from the battery.
- The block is disconnected from the sensor. If there is an injector, then simply pressing the plastic latch is enough.
- Next, you need to remove the two screws that secure the sensor. You need to start with the left fastener. When it is unscrewed, take the right screw.
- Before installing a new sensor, the O-ring should be treated with engine oil. If it is deformed (and with long-term use this is quite possible), then it should be replaced.
- Then calibration needs to be done. But no special effort is required on the part of the car owner, since an electronic relay will do this work for him.
- The ignition must be turned on for some time. Then it should be turned off.
- If the reason was in the sensor, then after some time at idle the speed stops floating.
It is easy to see that there is nothing complicated about replacing the idle speed sensor. Almost any car enthusiast who has an understanding of the structure of a car can cope with this task.
Repair and purchase of a new IAC
Above we looked at the procedure for a working sensor. If during diagnostics you cannot feel the vibration of the needle with your finger, then it is not worth repairing such a unit. It's easier to throw it away and buy a new one. There is no need to worry about this, since the price of an idle speed sensor for a VAZ 2114 is not high. The cheapest are domestic ones. The price tag starts from 350 rubles and depends on the manufacturer and type. There are 4 of them in total. It’s up to you to decide which IAC is best installed on the VAZ 2114, but the ideal option is to replace a new one with a similar one.
You can take the old one with you to the store and ask them to sell exactly the same one. Spare parts sellers can also provide advice on selection. You can buy an idle speed sensor in different places, such as auto parts stores and automobile markets. In this case, it is worth paying special attention to the type of packaging, the correct spelling of names and indicators.
Errors on the box are not typos, but indicate that the product is counterfeit. Externally, the packaging is very similar, so it is very easy for the car owner not to notice the difference. It is better to buy the necessary components and assemblies for a car in trusted places, always ask for a receipt for the purchase, and you can also ask for certificates for the model of interest.
It is impossible to determine the exact service life of the IAC. It depends on the quality of the material, the manufacturing plant, and the wear and tear of the entire vehicle. Therefore, when assessing performance, you need to pay attention to the above “symptoms”. As you can see, if the speed on a VAZ 2114 fluctuates, then you need to check the IAC first. There are no unnecessary components in a car, but the further condition of the engine depends on what speed the VAZ 2114 should be at idle. When you move the gear lever to the “neutral” position, your iron horse can stall at any intersection, which can lead to the most unpredictable consequences.
