We change steering tips on Lada Kalina

A car is a complex complex of various systems that are inextricably linked. The failure of one unit can provoke unpleasant consequences for both the car and the driver. Almost all mechanisms included in the control system operate in difficult conditions: large amounts of dirt, dust, water, snow, chemical reagents, negative temperatures. For this reason, they are very vulnerable, and their technical condition must be treated with increased attention, especially when operating a vehicle on unpaved roads.

How to change steering tips on Kalina

Instructions from the repair manual

  1. Remove the front wheel from the side on which the tip will be changed.
  2. Clean the tip connections with a brush and treat with a penetrating agent.
  3. Straighten and remove the tie rod ball pin cotter pin.
  4. Unscrew the pin nut using a 19 key.
  5. Press the pin out of the steering knuckle.
  6. Loosen the tip bolt with a 17mm wrench.
  7. Unscrew the tip flange using a screwdriver.
  8. Unscrew the end from the rod, taking into account the number of turns it took.
  9. If the adjusting sleeve rotates along with the tip, hold the sleeve with a 27 mm wrench
    .
  10. The threads of the new tip should be coated with Litol-24 type grease.
  11. Holding the bushing with a 27 wrench, screw on the new tip with the same number of turns that helped unscrew the old one.

The second steering tip changes in the same way.

Replacing steering tips on Kalina and Grant

Typically, steering tips last about 70-80 thousand kilometers with more or less gentle operation of the car. But if you consider that the quality of our roads leaves much to be desired, then we have to replace them a little more often. Using my Kalina as an example, I can say that at 40,000 km, an unpleasant knock appeared from the front of the car on a dirt road, and the steering wheel also became loose.

Since Kalina and Granta models are essentially the same, you can replace the steering tips using the example of one of these cars. To perform this repair, we will need the following tools:

  1. Wrench for 17 and 19 open-end or socket
  2. Socket heads for 17 and 19
  3. Torque wrench
  4. Mount or special puller
  5. Hammer
  6. Pliers
  7. Wrench with extension

If you want to see how this procedure looks live, so to speak, then watch my video instructions: And below the same work will be described only with a step-by-step photo report. By the way, here, too, everything is chewed down to the smallest detail, so you can figure it out without much difficulty.

So, the first step is to jack up the front of the car on the side where you plan to replace the tips and remove the wheel:

After this, you need to turn the steering wheel all the way so that it is more convenient to unscrew the tip. If you change from the left side, then you need to turn it to the right. Next, lubricate all connections with penetrating lubricant:

Now, using a 17mm wrench, unscrew the fastening of the tip to the rod, as is clearly shown in the photo below:

After this, use pliers to bend the cotter pin and remove it:

And unscrew the nut with a 19 key:

Then we take the pry bar and rest between the lever and the tip, and try to compress the tip, pressing the pry bar down with jerks with great force, and at the same time we hit the lever with the other hand with a hammer (in the place where the finger sits):

After short actions, the tip should be knocked out of its seat and the result of the work done will be approximately as follows:

Be sure to count the number of turns before completely unscrewing, as this will help maintain normal wheel alignment when replacing.

After this, screw on a new tip with the same number of turns, put back all the nuts and cotter pins:

The nut securing the tip to the steering knuckle must be tightened with a torque wrench with a force of at least 18 Nm. The price of the new parts that we changed was approximately 600 rubles per pair. After the replacement, the car becomes much better in terms of handling, the steering wheel becomes tight and there are no more bumps.

Replacing tie rod ends on the Lada Kalina is quite easy. This does not require special tools or devices. As practice shows, the service life of these parts ranges from 30 to 50 thousand km.

Video materials will tell you how to replace steering ends on Kalina, give recommendations and advice on the process

Worn tie rod end

Before we begin replacement, let's consider the main reasons for the failure of tie rod ends on the Lada Kalina:

  • Wear
. The most common reason that affects the frequency of replacement.
  • Driving style and manner
also influence the process of wear and failure. The less the car falls into holes and receives intense impacts, the longer the elements will last.
  • Timely maintenance
. The filling of the anthers with lubricant affects the durability of the elements.

These are the main reasons why tie rod ends can fail. Now, you can proceed directly to the replacement process:

A set of necessary tools for replacing the tip

  1. Raise the car on a jack.
Jack up and remove the wheel
  2. We turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction from the place where we will make the replacement.
  3. Using a 17mm wrench, unscrew the nut securing the tip to the rod.
Unscrew the fastening of the tip to the steering rod
  4. Pull out the cotter pin from the nut securing the tip to the stand.
Remove the cotter pin from the steering end mount
  5. Unscrew the nut.
Remove the nut securing the tip to the stand
  6. Using a pry bar, pry up the rod and press hard so that the tip comes out of the construction site.
Use a crowbar to lift the rod and tap it with a hammer to release it.
  7. Unscrew the tip clockwise.
Behind the clock hand, as shown in the photo, unscrew the tip from the mount
  8. We carry out the assembly in the reverse order.
    Installed new tie rod end

So, the tip has been replaced, and we carry out the same operations on the back side of the car. After replacing the elements, it is imperative to carry out a wheel alignment.

Selection of spare parts

Before choosing a Kalina tie rod end, you need to find out the catalog number. To do this, we turn to the reference catalog provided by the manufacturer. So, let's look at what parts are recommended to be installed on the Lada Kalina.

Then you can unscrew the nut with a ring wrench or an open wrench:

Then take the nozzle, if there is no special puller, and insert it between the rotation arrow of the stand and the tip. We push harder, as if we are trying to lift the tip up, and at the same time we hit the swing arm with a hammer in the place where the finger sits. This is shown more clearly in the photo:

After a few hard hits with a hammer and the force of the mounting arm, the tie rod end should pop out of the pivot arm hole as shown above.

We then take the tip and lift it, finally releasing it:

Now you can unscrew it from the tie rod

Please note that you need to rotate clockwise

Attention! Be sure to count the number of turns until the tip falls out completely. Failure to do this may result in serious front wheel toe problems.

And if you count and remember the number of turns you made, then you can add everything up approximately the same way as it was before the replacement.

I got 23.5 turns to the left and 21.5 turns to the right. Your details may vary.

The result of the work done looks like this:

Now we take the new hint we need in this case (right and left, different!) and rotate it clockwise by the number of turns it had during the rotation.

Tighten the clamp bolt in place, but the nut to secure the tip to the swing arm must be tightened at some point. My Ombra wrench, which had been idle for a long time, came to the rescue again. The tightening torque for this connection should be between 27 and 33 Nm. I translated up to 70 Nm manuals from the Third Rome, for which they “thank you very much”, jambs on every page of my book! Then I had to ease up when I checked in other sources.

Be sure to insert the locking pin into the pin hole and bend the edges. Here's a complete replacement, the end result of which is shown in the picture below:

Replacement to the other side is carried out in the same sequence. The price of new steering tips for Lada Kalina is about 600 rubles per pair.

As a result, after checking the road, the steering wheel has become noticeably larger, the knock and vibration on the steering wheel has ceased to be heard, and the response to turns is now instantaneous, which I have recently been missing. In short, now there are no coils and coils, all that remains is to check the ball and replace them if necessary, but more on that later!

Purpose and characteristics of steering tips

The control system of any car consists of the following main components:

  • a steering wheel with a steering mechanism that converts the rotational movement of the steering wheel into the translational movement of the rods;
  • steering rods that transmit force from the steering mechanism to the rotary arm of the wheel hub;
  • tie rod ends, ensuring rotation of the lever when the angle of inclination of its axis of rotation changes.

The design is equipped with a hinge that allows you to change the angle of inclination of the pin to which the rotating arm of the hub is attached. This transmits the necessary force to turn the wheel.

Schematic diagram of the tie rod end

The tip consists of the following main parts:

  1. Finger with a hinge in the form of a sphere.
  2. Grease.
  3. Protective case.
  4. Retaining ring.
  5. Pastel made of polymer.
  6. Stub.
  7. Frame.

An important link in the design is the protective cover, which prevents dirt, water and aggressive substances from getting on the rubbing surfaces of the hinge.

Reasons for replacement

Steering tips on the Lada Kalina are exposed to environmental influences and mechanical stress when driving on bad roads. All this leads to their damage and can create an emergency situation. For this reason, it is necessary to carry out regular inspections and identify emerging defects.

The first thing you need to pay attention to is the protective covers, or anthers. They must be filled with lubricant, there are no cracks or mechanical damage on the cover. Otherwise, immediate replacement of the Kalina steering tip boot is required.

A malfunction caused by wear on the joint can be identified by increased play in the steering wheel. Signs appear when the car is moving at low speeds. Damage to the hinge can also be detected by the characteristic knocking sound of the suspension during a turn.

A more accurate diagnosis is carried out by placing the car on a pit or overpass. You need to ask an assistant to shake the steering wheel, while the steering tip should not move along the axis of the finger by more than one and a half millimeters. Otherwise, the part requires replacement. In order to make sure there is play, you should check everything again. With both hands, shake the tip strictly in a vertical direction - if there is wear, play will certainly appear.

Parts selection

If you need to replace the tie rod end on Kalina, you should choose spare parts recommended by the manufacturer. First you need to write down the part number in the catalog or its alphanumeric designation. The article number for the right steering wheel end of domestic production is 1118-3414056, the left one is 1118-3414057. These spare parts are produced by VIS LLC in St. Petersburg.

  • "Fenox", CIS;
  • "Lemforder", Germany;
  • "Pilenga", Italy;
  • Brembo, Italy.

The quality of the products from these brands is approximately the same, but there is a slight difference in price. Products from domestic manufacturers are not inferior in quality and reliability at a lower cost.

conclusions

Replacing tie rod ends on a Lada Kalina is quite easy and does not require special knowledge and skills. Every car enthusiast can carry out this operation independently in his garage. It is worth choosing the parts themselves especially carefully, since the automotive spare parts market is saturated with fakes. So, it is worth checking for holograms and a quality certificate in the packaging.

It is believed that the service life of steering tips on Lada Kalina is about 80 thousand. But the resource declared by the manufacturer, especially on Russian roads, is significantly less. The process of replacing steering tips on Kalina, Kalina 2, Grant is identical.

List of required tools:

  • Pliers.
  • Puller or mount.
  • Socket or open-end wrenches 17mm and 19mm.

Replacement instructions

Changing the tips is not difficult; the process can be done by a car enthusiast with his own hands if he has the appropriate tool. Place the car on a level surface. It needs to be jacked up on the side where the tip will be replaced and the wheel removed.

If work is performed on the right, then for convenience the steering wheel should be turned to the right.

Then, having cleaned the necessary components from dirt and dust, you should apply a WD-type penetrating lubricant to the threaded connections. Now you need to loosen the bolt that tightens the tip with the steering rod and pull the cotter pin out of the ball pin with pliers. It is easier to detach the part from the swing arm using a special puller.

If you don't have one, you can use a pry bar and a hammer. It is necessary to insert the pry bar between the tip and the swing arm, make a wedging motion and hit the swing arm earring with a hammer. After a few blows, the tip will pop out of engagement.

To dismantle the steering tip, unscrew it from the rod. Count the number of turns until it is completely unscrewed: this will be very helpful when installing a new part and carrying out adjustment work. You need to unscrew the tip clockwise, since the connection has a left-hand thread. After replacement, all parts are installed strictly in the reverse order.

To ensure that the car does not let you down at the most important moment, it is necessary to carry out timely diagnostics of the engine, brake and chassis systems. For example, it is necessary to monitor the condition of ball joints, steering rods and tips. In this article we will look at replacing steering tips on a Lada Kalina on our own. The process is not complicated and you can handle it yourself.

Removing and replacing steering tips:

  • Before starting work, jack up the car and remove the front wheel. This is necessary in order to facilitate accessibility to the tip.
  • Using pliers, straighten it and then pull out the cotter pin.
  • Before unscrewing the tip nut, I recommend spraying it with WD-40 and waiting a bit. This will make the process of turning away easier.
  • Take a 19mm wrench and unscrew the nut.
  • At this stage we will need a puller or pry bar. With their help, we press the finger out of the hole in the steering knuckle.
  • At this stage, you will need a 17mm wrench, with which we unscrew the bolt that “tightens” the steering tip.
  • After the above steps have been completed, it is necessary to remove the steering tip by unscrewing it clockwise.

Installation of the tie rod ends is carried out in the reverse order. Do not forget to lubricate the threaded part with lithol in order to facilitate removal during subsequent replacements.

For example, it is necessary to monitor the condition of ball joints, steering rods and tips. In this article we will look at replacing steering tips on a Lada Kalina on our own. The process is not complicated and you can handle it yourself.

How to determine wear

To make sure that the tips need to be replaced, you should check their wear. One of the easiest ways is to check for play by hand. We turn the wheel out, press the upper part of the tip with the palm of our hand, and press it, while pressing the hinge from below with a finger. If there is any play, it means the tip is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Faulty steering ends will make themselves felt when the car drives over uneven surfaces. When driving through potholes or uneven surfaces, the steering wheel will feel squeaking. Also, when driving on a flat road, you should slightly turn the steering wheel left and right. If the tips are faulty, play will be felt.

If during a visual inspection you find a torn tip boot, you can safely replace it with a new one.

Which tie rods to choose

When choosing spare parts, you should decide whether to install factory or analog parts. Often, parts installed from the factory last much longer than those we install as replacements. However, sometimes even original parts last less than expected.

  • Left steering tip 11180-3414057-00 (VAZINTERSERVIS /OAT/) price from 450 rub.
  • Right steering wheel end 11180-3414056-00 (VAZINTERSERVIS /OAT/) price from 450 rub.

Good quality and very popular tips from TRACK

  • Left tip TR70-107 price from 400 rub.
  • Right handpiece TR70-108 price from 400 rub.

If it is not possible to purchase original factory tips, you can choose analogues:

  • HOFER HF 812002 price from 700 RUR set of 2 pieces
  • BELMAG BM1118-3414056/57 price from 800 RUR set

You can also immediately purchase tips from the company TRACK TRST-110 in a set of 2 pieces, price from 850 rubles per set

Replacement instructions

We put the car on a jack and unscrew the wheel. If you wish, you can put the car on 2 jacks at once and remove both wheels. But I prefer to change the tips one by one.

To make it easier to unscrew the tip fastening nut, pre-treat it with any penetrating lubricant. for example WD40 and let it sit for a few minutes.

We turn the wheel out to make it easier to unscrew the tip.

Now, using a 17mm wrench, unscrew the nut securing the tip to the rod.

Now, using a puller, we pull the tip out of the groove of the stand; if there is no puller, we simply knock it out.

In order to avoid wheel alignment after replacing the tips, you can count the number of turns that you make when unscrewing the tip.

So, unscrew the old tip, clockwise! If the adjusting sleeve starts to unscrew, hold it with a wrench.

We install the new tip, counting the turns, and reassemble in the reverse order, not forgetting to insert the cotter pin.

Many car enthusiasts and experts recommend installing sports tie rod ends on the Lada Kalina.

Is it necessary to do a wheel alignment?

It is necessary to do the alignment if you did not count the turns when unscrewing the old tips, and you also want to check if it has gone astray.

Replacing Kalina's steering ends is not difficult if you prepare the car for repairs in advance. A problem may arise with unscrewing the nuts located on the rods - they get stuck over time. Replacing these elements will get rid of extraneous sounds, jamming when turning, as well as play in the steering wheel. The work should be approached as responsibly as possible, only in this case the tips will last a long time.

Determining joint wear

To make sure that the steering tips of the Lada Kalina have become unusable, you need to check them. To do this, it is enough to estimate the amount of play. This is done as follows:

  1. Turn the wheel to the side.
  2. Press with your palm on the top of the element. Press from below with your finger.
  3. You will feel the play with your palm - you may even feel a slight knock or jamming.

Typically, the tips begin to show symptoms of failure when traveling on uneven roads. If you hit a small hole, a knock will be transmitted to the steering wheel.

Visual inspection of hinges

You can assess the condition of the play by driving on a flat road at a speed of 60 km/h. To do this, carefully rotate the steering wheel in different directions, a few degrees. If the play is very large, then the tips will need to be replaced.

The next stage is visual diagnostics. To do this, carefully inspect the condition of the Kalina steering wheel boots. If they have cracks, cuts, or there is no lubricant inside, then you should not operate the car - change the hinges immediately. Their cost is not very high, so you shouldn’t bother with restoration.

Factory tips for Kalina

On sale you can find elements that are installed from the factory, or similar products. It should be noted that an analogue is not always a low-quality part; sometimes they are much better than factory ones. The original ones have the following catalog numbers:

  1. "VAZINTERSERVICE" (OAT) - 11180-3414057-00. This is a rod end, the cost is over 450 rubles.
  2. "VAZINTERSERVICE" (OAT) - 11180-3414056-00. This is the end of the right tie rod, the cost is over 450 rubles.

Factory items are almost always of good quality, so you can purchase them with confidence.

Analogs of tips

There are also many analogues that are available in any store:

  1. Manufactured by "TRACK" with indexes TR70-107 and TR70-108 (left and right tips, respectively) - cost from 400 rubles and more.
  2. HOFER HF-812002 are sold as a set for the left and right sides. The cost of the set is at least 700 rubles.
  3. "BELMAG" BM-1118-3414056/57, also sold in sets of two tips, cost 800 rubles and more.

These are indicative prices, you need to build on them. If you come across a set of TRACK tips for 900 rubles (and these may be on sale), then these are most likely high-quality products. But if they cost 500 rubles or less, then this is an obvious fake - you should not trust such mechanisms.

Removing old tips

To dismantle the old Kalina steering tips, you need to prepare the car for repair:

  1. Be sure to place two stops under the rear wheels to prevent the car from rolling away during repairs.
  2. Loosen the bolts on the wheel that is being repaired.
  3. Raise the side to be repaired and place the machine on secure supports.
  4. Remove the cotter pin that secures the nut on the steering joint pin.
  5. Unscrew the nut using a “17” wrench. It is best to use socket or socket heads.
  6. After this, you need to loosen the nuts that secure the tip to the steering rack.
  7. Unscrew the bolt that secures the end of the rod (tension clamp).

Problems can arise with this - the nuts often stick. Therefore, you need to treat them with a penetrating lubricant in advance.

If this still does not help, you will need to completely remove the rods. For this:

  1. Remove the protective cover by unscrewing the nuts with a 10mm wrench.
  2. Unbend the locking plate, which is located under the bolts securing the rods to the rack.
  3. Using a 22mm wrench (it is advisable to use a socket with a ratchet), unscrew the bolts that secure the rod to the steering rack.
  4. Install a special puller on the tip, rotate its bolt until the pin comes out of the strut knuckle.
  5. Completely remove the linkage from the car.

To unscrew the nuts securing the tip, you need to thoroughly heat the threads. Without this, it is not always possible to replace Kalina steering tips. You can warm it up on the stove or with a simple gas canister. After you warm up the metal, you need to tap the nuts. After this they will definitely get out. Count how many revolutions the Kalina's steering ends are screwed in.

Checking and replacing steering tips – Lada Kalina Blog

Checking and replacing tie rod ends

A couple of days ago I decided to check the condition of the tie rod ends on my Kalina. The self-diagnosis method is quite simple. Personally, I did it as follows: Hold the tip, pressing it with your palm from above, and grabbing it with your fingers from below, try to press down. This is presented more clearly below:

If it dangles, moves up and down when pressed periodically, then this indicates that there is play in the mechanism and the tip needs to be replaced with a new one. Again, I want to warn you that the play may not appear the first time, try turning the steering wheel in different directions, or slightly change the position of the car, and then check everything again. In my experience it was like this: the left one dangled in any position, but the right one dangled every other time.

I went to the store and asked for original tie rod ends for Kalina. They are sold specifically for the VAZ 1118, and not for the 2108 or any others. The factory part code is as follows:

  • For right: 11180-3414056-00
  • For left: 11180-3414057-00

Please pay attention to this when purchasing new parts so that the factory catalog number does not differ from that marked on the box.

Features of replacing tie rod ends on Lada Kalina

To begin with, here is a list of tools that will be needed to perform this type of repair. I’ll say right away that this information is slightly different from the manual that was written by the “Third Rome”; they were probably mistaken. Here's what you need:

  • Balloon wrench
  • Jack
  • Open-end wrenches for 17 and 19
  • Pliers
  • Torque wrench (when tightening)

For those who like to watch everything live, I decided to make a video where I clearly showed everything:

And below there will be a step-by-step photo report on the work done, if suddenly it is not displayed.

First, we tear off the wheel bolts and jack up the car, the side where we are going to repair. Then we remove the wheel and be sure to apply penetrating lubricant to all threaded connections of the tip: to the pin and the tie bolt. One more thing: when performing the procedure on the left side, we turn the steering wheel all the way to the right, respectively, when replacing it on the right, we turn it all the way to the left. It will be more convenient to work this way.

Then we unscrew the coupling bolt, not necessarily all the way, the main thing is that the thread becomes looser. This bolt is located in the place shown in the photo:

Then we straighten the lower cotter pin of the tip nut and remove it with pliers:

Then you can unscrew the nut with a spanner or open-end wrench:

Next, we take a pry bar, if there is no special puller, and insert it between the swing arm of the stand and the tip. We press harder, as if trying to lift the tip up, and at this time we hit the rotary lever with a hammer exactly in the place where the finger sits. This is shown more clearly in the photograph:

After several strong blows of the hammer and under the influence of the lever from the mount, the steering tip should jump out of the hole in the swing arm, as shown above.

Then we take it by the tip and lift it up, thereby finally releasing it:

Now you can unscrew it from the steering rod. Please note that you must turn clockwise.

Attention! Be sure to count the number of turns until the tip is completely turned out. If this is not done, then there may be serious problems with the alignment of the front wheels. And if you count and remember the number of revolutions you made, then you can approximately put everything the same as it was before the replacement.

I got 23.5 turns on the left side and 21.5 turns on the right side. Your data may differ.

The result of the work done was as follows:

Now we take the new tip needed in this case (the right and left are different!) and twist it counterclockwise with the same number of turns as when unscrewing.

We tighten the coupling bolt into place, but the nut securing the tip to the swing arm should be tightened with a certain torque. Once again, my Ombra torque wrench, which had been lying around for quite some time, came in handy. The tightening torque of this connection should be between 27 and 33 Nm. I turned it up to 70 Nm according to the manual from the Third Rome, for which “many thanks” to them, there are jambs on every page in their book! After which I had to weaken it when I checked it in other sources.

Don’t forget to insert the locking pin into the pin hole and bend its edges. That's all the replacement, the end result of which is shown in the picture below:

Installing new items

After removing both elements, you can begin installing new ones. For this:

  1. Screw the end onto the rod the same number of turns as the old one was screwed in. Thanks to this, you will be able to maintain more or less acceptable toe-in of the front wheels. You will get to the car service center without much tire wear.
  2. Tighten the nut securing the tip by hand. It is advisable to use new nuts for reliability.
  3. Reinstall the rod. First, tighten the bolt at the point where it is attached to the steering rack.
  4. Install the Kalina steering tip pin into the hole in the rack. You can hit with your hand from top to bottom so that your finger fits as tightly as possible. The use of a hammer is not recommended.
  5. Tighten the nut by hand.

After all these manipulations, you need to tighten the threaded connections. Bend the plate on the steering rack so that the bolt does not come out while driving. At this point, the replacement of the Kalina tie rod ends is completed, and you can begin operation. It is advisable to place a small amount of Litol-24 lubricant under the boot; this will help increase the service life of the elements.

The reason why it is necessary to replace the steering tips on a Lada Kalina car is, as a rule, wear of the articulated joint, which leads to play, which subsequently affects the correct alignment of the front wheels. A worn steering tip is a guaranteed path to rapid wear of the front wheels of the car, so you should check these Lada Kalina steering elements from time to time and, if play in the articulated joint is detected, replace the steering tips. It should also be noted that the appearance of a characteristic knocking sound in the area of the front wheels when driving over small uneven surfaces indicates wear of the tips.

To replace Lada Kalina steering tips, you need the following tools:

  1. Jack
  2. Mount
  3. 10mm wrench, preferably with a ratchet
  4. Keys for 19 and 17
  5. Pliers, hammer

Instructions for replacing steering tips on a Lada Kalina car

  1. We place the car on a flat surface, place wheel chocks under the rear wheels and jack up and remove the front wheel.
  2. We turn the wheel in the opposite direction from the removed wheel and spray the connections of the steering tip with WD-40 liquid.
  3. Using a 17 wrench, unscrew the fastening of the tip to the steering rod
  4. Using pliers, remove the cotter pin from the nut that secures the tip to the steering arm and unscrew it with a 19 mm wrench.
  5. Using a pry bar, we pry up the steering tip, as shown in the photo, and use a hammer to strike the lever until the tip pin comes out.
  6. We change steering tips on Lada Kalina

  7. Now you can unscrew the tip by rotating it clockwise. In this case, it is recommended to count the number of turns that you made before completely unscrewing the tip, so that during installation you can set its correct position relative to the steering rod.
  8. Next, we screw the new Lada Kalina steering end onto the required number of turns and fasten it in the reverse order, not forgetting to install the cotter pin on the nut.
  9. After replacement, it is necessary to perform a wheel alignment of the car

Replacing steering tips for Lada Kalina

In fact, the entry should have been called “Replacing Ball Joints and Steering Ends,” but... it didn’t come true. I bought spare parts (ball and steering parts) back in the summer, and now, tired of carrying them around in the trunk, I went to twist the nuts.

Replacing steering tips for Lada Kalina

To begin with, of course, I opened the Murzilka, looked at what and how, and what tool was needed, took heads for 17 and 19, a wrench for 27, pliers, nothing else seemed to be needed, but we are in Russia, and we have a VAZ, so we also take heads 13, 14, wrench 17, 19, 21, copper spray, VDshka, wrench, ratchet and of course Hammer. No repair can be done without a hammer.

The photo shows only part of the tool, the rest is on the floor.

So, I took Lemforder tips because I was very pleased with the quality of their workmanship. For those who will order catalog numbers left - 35041 01, right - 35042 01, I took it from Exist, the price at the time of purchase was about 550 rubles.

I took the ball joints from LADA, why? I just went to the store for something and bought a bunch of them... I should have gotten them from Existence, but oh well.

I imagined the process of replacing tie rod ends as something out of the ordinary. I still have vivid memories of how they did the wheel alignment for me, the mechanic who did the wheel alignment used huge wrenches, a pipe, a gas burner, a bunch of VDshki, a huge sledgehammer and a bunch of obscene expressions... but... as usual, everything turned out to be exactly the opposite because the process of replacing the balls The support seemed to me like something very light and simple. In replacing the steering tips, the only thing that bothered me was whether I could unscrew it because they were stuck tightly, and on my left side, in general, everything was not just stuck, but fucking tightly burnt, and thanks for that to those who assembled my car in March 2007... So, the steering tips: Remove the wheel by first unscrewing the steering wheel in the other direction, i.e. When replacing the right end, turn the steering wheel to the left. Remove the cotter pin from the steering end mounting nut:

spray the nut, steering end and thread tie nut with VD. The 19mm head and the knob and tip nut gave in easily, you can unscrew the nut not completely and use a hammer to knock the tip up, or you can use a puller. I had a puller (puller for ball joints and steering rods VAZ 2108-099, 2113-15) price about 200 rubles in RusTrade product code 13216 Like this:

There are questions about the quality of its threaded part, but in the summer, with its help, I easily replaced the front struts without hammering.

Now the head is 17 and the knob and loosen the tightening of the threaded part of the tip:

Again we spray everything with VDshka And then I thought that now the Kama Sutra will begin, throwing a 27 wrench on the threaded coupling and resting it on the front pillar and clamped the steering tip with an adjustable wrench and began... in short, that same sex began... 1.5 turns I was able to turn the tip and All. nothing else, and these 1.5 turns spin easily, which surprised me, but nothing else... A minute later I realized that I needed to turn it in the other direction. It is quite inconvenient to twist, and it cannot be turned by hand, but it turned out to be convenient to use a spanner wrench by throwing it on the threaded part of the ball joint:

When unscrewing, count the revolutions so that you can tighten it later and write it down in a safe place:

Surprisingly, the threaded part of the bushing turned out to be almost free of rust, at least its outer part:

At that moment I realized that the key for 27 was, in principle, superfluous. The bushing is most likely stuck to the steering rod, and the rod cannot turn anyway, the question arises - what is the bushing for... let's leave this to the conscience of the AvtoVAZ engineers, they are probably making sure that the work does not seem like honey to the car repair shops. I applied the new tip to the old one to make sure that their geometry is the same, otherwise there is no point in counting the turns. There was some kind of plastic cone on the Lemforder, I still don’t understand what it’s for:

Probably, so that the rubber boot does not deteriorate during transportation, but... after all, the tip is packed in a durable plastic bag, and the bag is enclosed in a durable cardboard box... hmm... in general, I removed the cone... putting it on with it is idiotic, because it will immediately squeeze and burst. Once again about Lemforder quality

A good spare part is a branded spare part. Well, I coated the threads with copper spray, it might make it easier if you need to unscrew the nuts

And now a few words about the ball joint... it was very easy to unscrew the three nuts, no cotter pins, but I was unable to knock the ball joint out of the lower arm, I knocked with a hammer, sprayed it with a VDshka, pulled with a puller, knocked again... at that moment someone on AvtoVAZ probably hiccupped for a long time... in short, I couldn’t remove it... well... the road to the service center, it’s more convenient there, but you need to screw it back in, and I already unscrewed two bolts, and the hub moved away from the ball, this is where the real Kama Sutra began. No, connecting the hub and ball back together is, of course, a million times easier than unscrewing a 7-threaded stud from the hub. I couldn't unscrew this pin at all. In short: first unscrew the nut 19 securing the ball to the lever, then press out or knock out the ball! if you were able to knock it out or knock it out - congratulations, unscrew the bolts to 17 and change the ball, if you couldn’t - congratulations, tighten the nut to 19 and go to the service center, you just saved yourself the hemorrhoids of reuniting the ball and hub.
