Generators for VAZ. Retail market overview

The device of a car generator

A generator is a device driven by a car engine through a system of pulleys and a drive belt. Thanks to this rotation, an electric current is generated inside the device, which serves to charge the battery and operate on-board devices.

All car generators consist of the following elements:

  • aluminum cover with slots for mounting bearings, terminals and other elements;
  • a stator with power windings connecting it to a rectifying device;
  • rotor;
  • diode rectifier block;
  • relay-regulator.

Speaking about which generator is installed on the VAZ 2114, we should immediately mention its performance characteristics:

  • output current - 80 A;
  • generated voltage - from 13 to 14.7 V;
  • sagging of the drive belt under a load of 10 kg is no more than 0.8 cm.

When choosing a new generator for the 14th model, you should give preference to devices with increased current strength - not 80, but 100 or even 120 Amperes. This will help with the operation of the on-board electronics and will allow the battery to be charged to 100%.

Moscow Automotive and Tractor Electrical Equipment Plant ( ATE-1

) is one of the largest and oldest enterprises in the domestic automotive industry. At first, the plant was part of the plants of the Moscow Electric Plant - the first production association in the USSR, uniting the most important electrical enterprises for the country - Automotive Electrical Equipment Plant, Electric Lamp Plant, Transformer Plant (now the Kuibyshev Moscow Electric Plant) and Projector Plant.

By the 90s, the ATE-1

produced about 95 types of electric machines and electrical equipment. The main products of the plant were generators of various types, starters, relay regulators, electric motors, etc. Its electrical equipment included cars, tractors, combines and other equipment produced by the ZIL, GAZ, AZLK plants, Kirovsky Zavod, Rostselmash, etc. For large For its production successes, the plant was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.

New times in the life of the plant came with the arrival of new owners. In 1993, the plant was privatized and transformed into the joint stock company "ATE-1 Plant"

. Corporatization made it possible to revise the economic and personnel policies of the plant. Positive changes affected all areas of the plant’s activities; the new management managed to significantly improve the financial position of the enterprise and reconstruct the debt to the federal budget. Particular attention was paid to the quality and reliability of manufactured products, as well as to the modernization of production. The first step in bringing production to a high technological level was the introduction of a BOSCH line in the workshop for assembling alternating current generators.

Today joint stock company plant ATE-1

is a modern high-tech, knowledge-intensive production facility that employs more than 1,500 people. The company has a powerful production base, highly qualified engineering and production personnel. The main consumers are the plants KAMAZ, YaMZ, ZIL, PAZ, YarMZ, MZPA (freight), AvtoVAZ, VM, ZMZ, IzhMash (passenger cars).

The plant produces the following products:

– generators for cars/trucks

— electric motors with pumps for liquid heaters

- electronic products

Since 2001, the company has been a member of the Association of Manufacturers of Components for Motor Vehicles, Tractors and Agricultural Machines (AP Avtoselkhozmashkomponenty).

Since 2000, the plant has been part of the concern “Manufacturers of Automotive and Motor Equipment” - PRAMO.

Generator - performance check

Many car enthusiasts are interested in how to test a new generator that has just been installed on a car? Or how to check that the old one has already failed, although it seems to be working normally? After all, driving with a faulty generator can have a number of unpleasant consequences, the easiest of which is completely discharging the battery and stopping the car, and the most severe is damage to the on-board network and devices.

In order to test this device, you will need a tester (multimeter).

The diagnosis itself is performed in the following order:

  1. Turn on the ignition.
  2. Check to see if the generator/battery lights on the instrument panel come on.
  3. Start the engine - if the light goes out, then everything is in order, if not, then there is a malfunction.
  4. Wait until the engine warms up to operating temperature.
  5. Turn on ALL electrical consumers - lights, fans...
  6. We bring the engine speed to 3500.
  7. Turn on the multimeter in voltage measurement mode and connect the probes to the battery.
  8. If the generator is working, the multimeter will show 13 volts, if less, then there is a malfunction.
  9. Without turning off the engine and maintaining speed, turn off all electricity consumers - the multimeter should now show 14.7 volts or slightly higher - this also indicates that the device is working properly.

Generators for VAZ. Retail market overview

In January-February 2014, a powerful cold front hit Russia. In most regions of the country, the average air temperature was significantly below normal. Such severe cold weather certainly affected the demand for parts of electrical equipment for cars, which operate under extreme conditions in such weather. This became one of the additional reasons for the generator segment to become the object of our next retail market research.

The information was collected by the marketing department of our magazine.

This time, the marketing department of the Autobusiness magazine concentrated on VAZ car generators. There have been some changes in this market over the past few years. In particular, in the secondary market the need for generators of the old modification 2101-3701005 has noticeably decreased. Generators of this brand are still represented in retail, but the number of brands is no longer as large as 4-5 years ago. In the “Classics” segment, generators 2107-3701010 are becoming increasingly popular, which are installed as standard on cars of the “classic” AvtoVAZ family with injection engines. It is this generator that we chose as the object for evaluating the “Classics” segment.

The most popular generator in recent years has become the 2108-3701010 generator, which is installed on a fairly wide range of cars produced by AvtoVAZ OJSC from 2020 to 2110, including the entire modern Lada Samara family.

The standard generator of the Lada Kalina family (VAZ 1117-1119) - 1118-3701010 - will be responsible for the “new segment” in this study.

Traditionally, the entire retail market for VAZ generators can be divided by country of production into three large groups. The first group is Russian-made generators. The second is generators from the CIS countries (Belarus and Ukraine). The third is generators from Bulgarian companies. This market structure has been around for a long time and continues to exist today, with minor changes in shares. For example, in recent years, the presence of Ukrainian brands Elprom-Elhovo and Kherson on the Russian market has dropped significantly. The representation of Russian brands, on the contrary, has increased. It is noteworthy that Chinese manufacturers of auto components have actively entered the market. The LKD Electrical trademark, owned by NIN GBO LKD ELECTRICAL, is quite well represented in all three segments. The brand is already present on the market no worse than most Bulgarian brands that have been operating on the Russian market for decades. Now let's talk more specifically about the representation of each brand in each segment.

Lada-2105-2107

The level of competition in this market segment is not high. Only 11 brands are represented by more than 1%. There is a clear leadership of Russian brands. In total, such manufacturers as ZiT (Tarasov Plant, KZATE), Pramo, Elektrom, KEMZ, ATE-1, SOATE are represented in more than 70% of the market. The absolute leader of the segment is Plant named after. Tarasov, who is a supplier of original generators to AvtoVAZ OJSC. In second place in terms of this indicator are Chinese products LKD. Of the Bulgarian manufacturers in this market segment, the Eldix brand is best represented - 7%. The majority of Russian brands have the same share of representation - StartVolt, Elektrom, ATE-1. The remaining brands have a representation of 5% and below.

The price leaders in this segment are the generators that are best represented on the market. ZiT brand products cost an average of 3,320 rubles. On average, Pramo generators cost about the same. The products of the Bulgarian company Eldex are also in the upper price segment.

Chinese generators generally justify their status as popular products in the lower price segment. Of the brands that are well represented on the market, LKD generators are the most affordable. The only cheaper generators are KEMZ and Elprom-Elhovo. All other brands are also in the lower price segment - from 2,500 to 2,700 rubles.

Lada 2110-2115

There is much more competition in this segment. More than 15 brands are already represented here. Of these, 14 are represented in more than 1% of retail outlets. The structure of brand representation is radically different from the generator segment for “Classics”. The leadership of ZiT generators (KZATE) in terms of representation no longer looks so unconditional. Generators of this brand are presented in every third store. In general, the representation of brands from Russia in this segment is lower. Russian-made generators are offered by slightly more than 50% of retail outlets. The Pramo and StartVolt generators have higher levels of representation.

LKD generators in this segment were able to maintain second place in terms of market presence. They lost it to the Bulgarian Eldix generators. In addition to this brand, the second popular brand from Bulgaria in our country, Dynamo, is also represented in this segment. Another brand from Eastern Europe – the Slovenian ISKRA – has a good share of representation.

The Bulgarian brand of generators BATE, which was not represented at all in the previous segment, received 6% in retail chains here.

The pricing policy of the main players in this market generally repeats the picture that we saw in the “Classics” segment. The upper price segment (more expensive than 3,000 rubles) is occupied mainly by Russian and Eastern European brands, which have a good presence in retail outlets. The Bulgarian brand BATE and Pramo are also located on the border of the upper price segment.

In the mid-price segment, the main player is LKD Electric. This is the only brand with a market presence of more than 5%, whose products are in the range of 2500-3000 rubles. The lower price segment (from 2,500 rubles and below) is occupied by three brands that have minimal market presence: ATE-1, Fenox, KEMZ.

Lada Kalina

The capacity of this market segment is still quite small. Lada Kalina has been produced since 2004. The estimated service life of the generator is at least 125,000 kilometers. If we assume that the average annual mileage of a passenger car is 20,000 kilometers, then we can assume that only a very small number of cars of this brand produced between 2004 and 2007 need to replace the alternator today. However, this segment cannot be discounted, since Kalina underwent a restyling last year, which means that its sales will continue to grow.

Currently there are 7 brands on the market that produce generators for Lada Kalina. There was not a single new brand in this segment. Moreover, the structure of this market is very similar to the picture that we observed in the “Classics” segment, namely, a high representation of Russian brands. They are represented in more than 75% of retail outlets. The Chinese brand LKD also has high levels of representation. However, it still lost second place to the Russian brands StartVolt and Pramo. Of the Eastern European companies, only the Eldix brand managed to break into this segment. The Belarusian BATE is also present, but is represented much worse than in the segment of front-wheel drive cars of the Samara family.

The average cost of a generator for Lada Kalina on the market is noticeably higher than the cost of this unit for the Classic and Samara. Generators from leading manufacturers with good retail presence are located in the price segment from 3,500 to 4,000 rubles. It is not possible to identify the lower price segment, since all other brands are located very close to each other in the range from 2,700 to 3,000 rubles. This situation also indicates a low level of competition and good prospects for new brands to enter this segment.

Igor Yavdoshchuk, Marketing Director of StartVOLT:

— What models of generators for VAZ cars are most in demand on the market today?

— The top positions continue to be the LG 0108 100A generator (for VAZ 2104-2107, 21043-21073, 2108-21099, 21213 Niva vehicles) and the LG 0110 135A generator (for VAZ 2110-2112, 2113- 2115, 2170-2172 "Priora"). The high sales volume for these items is due to objective indicators: the fleet of these vehicles, the age of such vehicles, the quality of standard parts and the alternator replacement interval. In general, the entire group of generators for VAZ series cars is in good demand, although the objective trends in the evolution of the Russian vehicle fleet towards a shift towards foreign cars are making their own adjustments. The Lada Largus is also a dark horse, after the launch of which many began to have certain hopes.

— Describe the competitive advantages of your generators.

— StartVOLT generators are unique products that are significantly superior to standard analogues in their output characteristics and consumer properties. The main advantage of StartVOLT generators from the beginning of their conquest of the Russian market was the output characteristics of the entire line of generators - 80A for the “penny” and “eight” and 120A for generators of the rest of the model range of domestic cars. Not stopping there, the company's OKR-OTK introduced another series of improvements, which together made it possible to achieve another unique result - 100A for the “kopek” and “eight”, and 135A for the rest of the line of generators!

The packaging of each generator is unique: in addition to the product itself, a warranty card and a convenient document, two additional documents are also included:

• instructions for self-installation and diagnostics - a small, easy-to-read book - an educational program for self-diagnosis of a failed generator and step-by-step self-installation of the StartVOLT generator of all offered models.

• an individual technical passport for each specific generator, issued by a computer testing stand - absolute know-how on the Russian market! This passport indicates the type and serial number of the generator being tested, the date of testing, and also reflects in detail all the technical characteristics of this particular generator. At the end, the current-voltage characteristic is given (the dependence of the current supplied by the generator on the rotation speed of the generator rotor (not to be confused with the crankshaft speed of the car engine!). The inclusion of this passport in the kit with each generator is one of the elements of the new policy of complicated step-by-step quality control and a guarantee of checking everything array (100%) of manufactured products.

At the same time, all StartVOLT products are offered on the Russian market at fair average market prices and are accompanied by high-quality advertising and marketing support, as well as all related service elements aimed at strengthening the loyalty of our customers.

At the moment, none of the Russian market players involved in the supply of generators is ready to compete on equal terms with the StartVOLT brand in terms of design and consumer properties, which is directly confirmed by the active growth in demand for generators produced by StartVOLT. A highly qualified approach to production, responsible management, flexibility in decision-making and a constant desire to be ahead allow us to build even more bold and ambitious plans for the near term.

Tatyana Zakrevskaya, Bosch product manager for starter-generator group:

— What models of generators for VAZ cars are most in demand on the market today?

— In new VAZ models, an increasing number of energy consumers appear, and this entails increased demands on the generator. It should be more powerful, ensure the operation of all energy consumption systems, but at the same time be compact, reliable, and last as long as possible. Therefore, domestic automakers are increasingly choosing a supplier of standard electrical equipment. Bosch, for example, was chosen as a conveyor supplier of generators for the VAZ Lada Granta, Kalina, Priora models. The same requirements for the generator are imposed on the secondary market. But in addition to reliability and good technical performance, car owners also need an acceptable price. That is why Bosch has made available for the secondary market the same generator that is installed on the VAZ assembly line: it meets all technical requirements and at the same time is quite affordable in price.

— Describe the competitive advantages of your generators.

— Bosch has more than a century of history in the production of generators and is one of the recognized world leaders in the development and production of electrical equipment. The main advantages of Bosch generators are high energy efficiency, compact size, and quiet operation. And of course, reliability. Reliability means, firstly, a long service life, which is very important for owners of budget cars who are careful about repair costs. Secondly, there is confidence that the generator will not cause the failure of other parts of the electrical circuit, which again reduces subsequent maintenance costs. Another advantage of Bosch generators is their repairability, which is very important in our market. This is ensured by the fact that Bosch offers not only complete units, but also a full range of spare parts. Those. even in the event of a possible failure of the generator, you can not replace the entire generator, but repair the broken unit.

Which generator should you choose?

Before we get to the story about which VAZ 2114 generator is better, it’s worth saying - why shouldn’t you buy a battery native to the 14th model? The fact is that it is designed for a fairly low current - only 80 A.

Considering that while the car is running, the generator has to not only charge the battery, but also power electronic devices, this current is simply not enough to fully charge the battery (we should also add, albeit small, current losses in the circuit). That is why it is advisable to install a more powerful generator.

When choosing a generator in a car store, it is better to give preference to more expensive models. As the practice of many drivers shows, the cheapest models of generators fail almost immediately.

So, what devices can be installed on the VAZ 2114?

Firstly, without any modifications you can install 37.3701 from the 15th model. It is completely interchangeable with the original 14th generator, but the problem is that its amperage is even less - only 55 A. Therefore, it should be installed only as a last resort.

The second acceptable option is a generator from Priora or Kalina - it creates a current of 115 A, which is enough to charge the battery and operate all on-board electronics. True, you will have to replace the device pulley with a more suitable one.

The third option is a generator from PRAMO, which has an amperage of 120 A. This is the most optimal option of all for 2114.

And finally, generators from Eldix with a current of 80 or 115 A - they are completely identical to the 14th model generator in terms of external dimensions and pulley parameters. The only thing worth remembering is that they are practically not repairable. Even if there is a minor breakdown, the entire device will have to be replaced.

Generator 140 amperes for VAZ 2110

Good day everyone, a little late (a couple of months) but maybe this will be useful to someone)) In general, often when I came to the car I discovered that the battery had been drained, this didn’t happen every day but very often, of course it was possible would you think?! Of course, what about the battery, is it already tired of starting the engine for 4 years and that it’s time for the “old man” to retire! Naturally, I didn’t have the money to go out and buy a new battery. I had about a week left until my salary, I think I’ll roll over like hell! Well, in the process of waiting for my salary, I began to notice that the engine does not start when many consumers are on, sometimes the lights are on, the stove is on, and of course the music is loud with a subwoofer! Well, the experiments began, in the end I had to give up the low beam, and I repeat, I rarely turned on the stove at the beginning of summer anyway)) And then the smart idea popped up to take a multimeter and check the voltage (the one on the on-board computer is lying very much) and it turns out that without consumers I was 12.9 - 13, but with consumers it reached 11.5! I had a similar problem on my first car and it was solved by replacing the alternator brushes, without hesitation, I went to the store to buy brushes, and then, got the keys and screwdrivers in hand and went to change them! After installation, nothing changed at all, well, I think maybe they’ll “get used to it”, the best will be, drove 150 km, froze again and failed again ((the price seems to have been 150 rubles for new brushes

Well, I think if it’s not the brushes it means “chocolate” (voltage regulator or diode bridge), I’m going to a specialized store that deals in generators, but there wasn’t a factory one there! But they offered me a slightly more expensive custom version, from UTM, costing 850 rubles, so the salary came, I thought, okay, I’ll take it!

Well, screwdrivers and keys again, and waiting for a miracle! I installed everything, started the engine and my charge was completely gone, a lamp on the dashboard signals this to me! I look at this lamp and think “What the fuck?!” Then there was a nervous break, manipulations with changing brushes from new to old, old to new, and the diode bridges were changed several times, but the lamp was still on! I gave up on everything, went and grabbed a beer and started relieving stress))) In general, while relieving stress, I came up with a brilliant idea to buy a new generator, but I think I’ll take it from the Priora at 115A! In the morning I walked to the store to get some genea, in the store they offered me a 140A viburnum generator and the most expensive one was 500 rubles! Well, I’m thinking about going for a walk, I’ll take it! They asked 6300 for it

Naturally, the connection chips are different for the VAZ 2112 and Kalina, I took another chip, in general the Kalinovskaya chip with two wires, but in the store it turned out to be a chip with one wire; in general, I didn’t have to “farm” anything, the cost was 35 rubles

Well, and since we have more generator power, I purchased power wires pv3 - 0Ga from the generator to the battery, the price for a ready-made set is 1100

Well, in general, the installation of the generator jumped in almost like a native one, now the charge without consumers is 14.4 - 14.5, and with consumers the low beam, high beam fog lights, stove, heated rear window and music a little more than half of the bump did not drop below 14V! Although it is expensive, I am very pleased with the result, the battery, of course, also needs to be changed, but it will still last until the first cold weather))

By the way, if anyone is interested in how to change the generator brushes and diode bridge without removing the generator, I recorded a video with detailed explanations and posted it on my YouTube channel! Write in the comments if anyone needs it, I’ll send you the link))

Useful video

You can watch a video on replacing the generator below:

An element such as a generator performs one function - it converts engine energy into electricity, which is then used by various on-board systems.

This article describes exactly what voltage a working generator installed on a VAZ-2114 car should produce during operation, as well as about the unit itself and possible malfunctions that occur in it.

Generator Basics

Electricity is generated under the influence of a magnetic field. It is produced by two main parts found in any generator:

The latter is a movable element consisting of a core made of steel tips. On them, in turn, windings are strung.

The stator is a ring assembled from steel plates. There is also a coil of fairly thick copper wire inside. All of these elements are hidden in the case. Bearings are responsible for the smooth rotation of the rotor. Besides them, there is also:

  • pulley;
  • diode bridge;
  • impellers;
  • voltage regulator.

Checking the voltage on the generator

According to the operating rules, a control measurement of the voltage produced by the generator is carried out every six months. It is ideal to do this in autumn and spring (before and after cold weather). The thing is that it is during this period that the device experiences peak loads. It is important to remember that the check is done regularly and in full according to the algorithm given below.

This procedure should not be ignored, since the value of the element in question is very large. After all, if it is not able to produce electricity, then pretty soon the battery will run out, and the engine, at one far from perfect moment, simply will not start. Moreover, if the output voltage is too high, then the chance of failure of other components or the wiring itself increases, and looking for a breakdown in which will be a dubious pleasure.

Battery when replacing the generator with a more powerful one

When replacing the unit, as the amperage increases, the battery must also be replaced. The fact is that an increased current of 100 Amps supplied by the generator can lead to the boiling of the cans in the battery. And this causes faster battery failure. You need to select a battery for the Priora based on the size of the battery seat. As a rule, batteries with a larger capacity are also larger in size.

But if the standard battery on VAZ cars has a capacity of 55 A/h, then the 60 A/h battery is almost the same in size, and when replaced, fits perfectly into a standard battery platform. Although for a powerful generator it is still better to install a battery with a capacity of 65-72 A/h. They are slightly larger in size and do not fit into the factory tray by only a couple of centimeters. In this case, you can carefully trim the side so that the battery fits into place. It will still be held in place by the fastening device from the old battery and will not budge.

But as mentioned, it is advisable to carry out all this work by an experienced craftsman, or at least after thoughtful consultations.

The video shows the process of replacing the generator on a Priora:

Malfunctions

The following signs indicate that there is a problem with the generator:

  • the loud noise it makes;
  • The battery light installed on the panel is brighter than usual;
  • The lighting in the car is too bright;
  • Electrical appliances do not turn on when the battery indicator goes out.

A hum or noise from the generator indicates that the bearings have become unusable. Most often, failure occurs in the front. You should not use a machine with such a malfunction - if the generator jams, then, most likely, it will completely lose its functionality. New ones, as you know, are not cheap.

Bright lighting of the lights (even when the engine is turned off) indicates that the limit voltage in the network has been exceeded.

Generator check

This procedure should be performed in the following sequence:

  • the ignition is turned on (all the lights on the panel in the cabin should be on);
  • the engine starts (if everything is in order with the generator, the battery indicator goes out);
  • after the power plant has warmed up (90 degrees), the network must be loaded to the maximum;
  • the assistant needs to ensure that the idle speed is maintained at 3.5 thousand;
  • The multimeter is connected to the battery.

Normally, when fully loaded, the readings should not be lower than 13 volts.

If the voltage is less than the specified limit, the generator does not produce enough electricity.

When no problems are noticed, the measurement is carried out after the load is completely disconnected. Here the normal data is from 14.5 to 14.7 volts.
