Illumination of door handles is, without a doubt, necessary for every car. After all, door handles are exactly that part of the car that we constantly touch when entering and exiting our vehicle. Illuminated handles will be the best option not only for those who operate their cars at night, the products will also come in handy during periods of thick fog. Therefore, we will consider installing lights in car doors with our own hands in more detail.
Installation in a lock
With the second option, the part will be placed not in the threshold, but at the top of the door. The wires are redirected to the lock. In this case, the function of the switch is taken over by the lock contacts. There are practically no difficulties in installation. Refining the circuit involves installing additional wiring and plugs for connections. During installation, it is necessary to protect the wires from abrasion using a corrugated hose or insulating tape. To implement this method, it is necessary to disassemble the lock and remove the locking bracket. The work is carried out in the following sequence:
- Remove the lock.
- Pull out the protective bracket.
- Open the connector plugs.
- Insert terminals.
- Connect the wires on the driver's door side.

Good day to all! Today I’ll tell you how I got confused with illuminating the area near the doors. This theme is present on most new foreign cars already from the factory, but they are all implemented differently: in Kia, Ford, VAG it is done in the exterior mirrors, in BMW and some Audi models in the handles, I also saw it from the bottom of the threshold on someone. I refused the option with mirrors because... Their shape is such that the light will be towards the wing and not the doors. This is the BMW version that I liked the most and we will build on it.
To be honest, I had this idea in my head for a long time, but I somehow stopped such thoughts because making the backlight itself is not so difficult, but connecting it so that it works like a standard one (with my knowledge of electrical engineering) is already huge problem. All the diagrams and options that I found looked something like this in my understanding.
The only option was an alarm, and after studying the instructions for various additional functions, I found exactly what I needed, it’s called polite backlight, I didn’t have it connected before. The point is that when the car is disarmed from the alarm system, a pulse is given for 30 seconds or until the ignition is turned on.
And so, now everything in order may be useful to someone. The first thing was to go choose diodes, I settled on baseless diodes for the dimensions, the color is naturally white. They look like this, the price is 8 hryvnia each.
Next, we remove the handle itself; I won’t describe the process itself because... there is nothing complicated there, and there are plenty of reports about it.
Handle from inside
We drill a hole in it with a diameter of 5 mm.
Next, we take our diode, remove the white plastic from it and see this picture.
We solder the wires to it and stuff them into heat shrink or simply insulate them. And we place the diode in the handle in this way.
fill it all with silicone, it turns out securely and airtight.
We put the handle in place, wind the negative wire directly to the handle mounting bolt, and stretch the positive wire along the original wires in the doors.
Further regarding the connection, you will need a regular 4-pin relay, preferably with a fuse. We connect the 30 and 85 contacts of the relay to the constant + (it can be taken immediately from the alarm system. We find the polite backlight control wire in the alarm system and connect it to the 86 contact. The 87 contact is + for the LEDs. Here is my connection diagram. I think it will be difficult to come up with something simpler .
